Monetary policy ensures the financial system stabilization. Financial inclusion, characterized by the access and use of available financial services (credit, savings, payments, insurance at a low cost), by a broader population, may explain the effectiveness of the monetary policy, especially in developing countries. The objective of this study is to carry out a comparative analysis between the countries of Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), on the causal relationship between financial inclusion and monetary policy, as well as to assess the impact of financial inclusion over monetary policy. To support our study, we applied the panel vector autoregressive (PVAR) methodology, simple panel data models, and a feasible generalized least squares (FGLS) model. Results provide strong evidence of the existence of reverse causality between financial inclusion and monetary policy in both SSA and LAC, with monetary policy facilitating financial inclusion in both regions. Financial inclusion increases the effectiveness of monetary policy in SSA, while for LAC financial inclusion improves the efficiency of monetary policy. Thus, increased access to and use of financial services increase the efficiency of monetary policy in controlling inflation. Governments are encouraged to design or enhance policies that expand financial services, as well as to promote investment in financial inclusion in developing countries, to maintain the monetary system stability.

Every year, news about the publication of rankings and scores of important international indexes are highlighted, with some of the most prestigious being the Global Competitiveness Index (GCI), the Human Development Index (HDI), the Ease of Doing Business (EDB), the Environmental Performance Index (EPI) and the Global Entrepreneurship (GEI). A country’s progression in these indices is associated with economic growth, especially since several empirical studies have found evidence to reinforce these beliefs, the indices having been built based on the scientific literature on economic growth. Building a database on these indices for European Union countries between 2007 and 2017 and using panel data methodologies and then 2SLS (Two-Stage Least Squares) to solve the problem of endogeneity, we verify empirically through panel data estimates, what is the relationship between the mentioned indices and the European Union countries’ economic growth for the period. However, as the European Union is made up of diverse countries with different economic and social realities, we divided the countries into six clusters and made an individual interpretation for each one. We found that human development and competitiveness play an important role in economic growth, and entrepreneurship also impacts this growth. Regarding income distribution, applying the Gini index, we found that only human development mitigates inequalities.

This study examines the effects of financial inclusion on energy poverty using the 2018 Turkish Household Budget and Consumption Expenditure Surveys. The study adopts three different measures of energy poverty and then analyzes the impact of financial inclusion proxied by a multidimensional index on energy poverty using different estimation strategies. After addressing the endogeneity of financial inclusion by instrumenting financial inclusion with access to the nearest bank in a two-stage least squares framework, the empirical results show that financial inclusion significantly alleviates energy poverty while its impact is higher for female-headed households. These findings are robust to Oster's (2019) bounds estimates that deal with omitted variable bias. The results also suggest that health and income are significant through which financial inclusion influences energy poverty. The findings thus point to the need for policies that promote financial inclusion as a way of alleviating energy poverty.

Air quality is a topic with growing interest within the tourism industry, especially for destinations with a high volume of tourism. Several implications on tourism demand are already recognised, such as influence on health and well-being, travel behaviour and trip satisfaction. However, there is a knowledge gap concerning its influence on tourism decision making. To overcome this gap this study intends to examine the relevance of destinations’ air quality on tourism decision making before and during tourism trips. A qualitative study was carried out based on in-depth interviews with visitors from different cultural backgrounds and with different health conditions. A content analysis was undertaken to find the major references regarding the topic and to establish a comparative analysis. The results demonstrate a lack of concern regarding air quality in specific dimensions of travel planning. Nevertheless, when visitors are confronted with episodes of air pollution at the destination, they tend to adopt adaptive strategies to prevent negative effects. Differences were found between groups from different places of residence and between individuals with or without health problems. The paper ends with guidelines for those developing recreation and tourism activities concerning the relevance that should be assigned to air quality in the development of these activities.

The pandemic caused by coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (associated to the disease named COVID-19) is having a global impact that affects health, the economy and the environment. These impacts are negative in most of the sectors but benefits also occurred in specific fields. Tourism was one of the most negatively affected economic sectors, and in terms of benefits, the improvement of air quality can be highlighted, with positive health implications. This paper aims to evaluate the impacts on these two particular fields—tourism and air quality—focusing on Portugal due to the relevance of tourism in the country. The research carried out in this paper enables us to find the most critical areas and identifies lessons learnt and recommendations for the post-COVID period. Tourism and air quality data were collected for both 2019 and 2020 and compared in terms of quantitative and spatial analysis. The Lisbon metropolitan area—the geographical area where the capital of the country is located—was the area that suffered the most negative impacts in terms of tourism activity but was also the one where highest benefits in terms of air pollution reduction and human exposure were felt. Recommendations for future strategies are suggested, including new concepts of tourism connected to the environment; the investment in online/virtual tourism activities; promotion of the domestic market; mitigation of the over-tourism problem and using environmental issues, such as air quality, as new attractiveness criteria for tourism destinations.

This paper evaluates the evolution of eco-efficiency for the 27 European Union (EU) countries over the period 2008–2018, provided the traditional high concerns of the EU concerning the economic growth-environmental performance relationship. The EU has triggered several initiatives and regulations regarding environmental protection over the years, but as well the Sustainable Development Goals demand it. Under this setting, we conduct a two-stage analysis, which computes eco-efficiency scores in the first stage for each of the pairs EU 27-year, through the nonparametric method data envelopment analysis (DEA), considering the ratio GDP per capita and greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). In the second stage, scores are used as a dependent variable in the proposed fractional regression model (FRM), whose determinants considered were eight pollutants (three greenhouse gases and five atmospheric pollutants). CO2/area and N2O/area effects are negative and significant, improving the eco-efficiency of the EU 27 countries. When the efficient European countries are excluded from the estimations, the results evidence that CO2/area and CH4/area decrease the DEA score. The country with the lowest GHG emissions and pollutant gases was Ireland, being the country within the considered period that mostly reduced emissions, particularly SOx and PM10, increasing its score.

Decreased greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) are urgently needed in view of global health threat represented by climate change. The goal of this paper is to test the validity of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis, considering less common measures of environmental burden. For that, four different estimations are done, one considering total GHG emissions, and three more taking into account, individually, the three main GHG gases—carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrous oxide (N2O), and methane gas (CH4)—considering the oldest and most recent economies adhering to the EU27 (the EU 15 (Old Europe) and the EU 12 (New Europe)) separately. Using panel dynamic fixed effects (DFE), dynamic ordinary least squares (DOLS), and fully modified ordinary least squares (FMOLS) techniques, we validate the existence of a U-shaped relationship for all emission proxies considered, and groups of countries in the short-run. Some evidence of this effect also exists in the long-run. However, we were only able to validate the EKC hypothesis for the short-run in EU 12 under DOLS and the short and long-run using FMOLS. Confirmed is the fact that results are sensitive to models and measures adopted. Externalization of problems globally takes a longer period for national policies to correct, turning global measures harder and local environmental proxies more suitable to deeply explore the EKC hypothesis.

Purpose The investigation of the relationship between gender diversity and corporate risk-taking is a recent stream of research. In this study, the authors propose an answer to the following main question: What do the authors know about gender effects in corporate risk-taking and how should we proceed? Design/methodology/approach In order to ensure the quality and the objectiveness of the literature review, the authors selected articles published in journals that are simultaneously ranked by the Chartered Association of Business Schools (ABS, 2018) and by the Journal Citation Reports (JCR, 2018), focused on the Board of Directors (BoD) and Top Management Teams (TMT). Findings The literature review reveals that women's presence on the BoD and TMT impacts corporate risk-taking in different ways. Based on the analysis, it is possible to organize the extant findings in two major categories, according to gender measures, firm type and country of origin: (1) universal effects – women decrease firms' litigation risk, failure risk and operational risk while they have no significant effect on insolvency risk and; (2) contingent effects – women have contingent effects on financial risk, manipulation risk, total risk, idiosyncratic risk and systematic risk. Originality/value Covering several different research fields, this study provides a comprehensive review concerning what the authors know regarding the effects of the BoD and TMT gender diversity in corporate risk-taking. The authors present a model summarizing empirical findings and propose a number of avenues for future research.

This study aims to evaluate the economic and environmental efficiency of Asian and African economies. In the model proposed, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is considered as the desired output and Greenhouse Gases (GHG), like carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, as the undesirable output. Capital, labor, fossil fuels, and renewable energy consumption are regarded as inputs, and the GDP/CO2 ratio is the output, by using a log-linear Translog production function and using data from 2005 until 2018, including 22 Asian and 22 African countries. Results evidence cross-countries heterogeneity among production inputs, namely labor, capital, and type of energy use and its efficiency. The models complement each other and are based on different distributional assumptions and estimation methods while providing a picture of Eco-efficiency in Asian and African economies. Labor and renewable energy share increase technical Eco-efficiency, while fixed capital decreases it under time-variant models. Technical improvements in Eco-efficiency are verified through time considering the time variable into the model estimations, replacing fossil fuels with renewable sources. An inverted U-shaped Eco-efficiency function is found concerning the share of fossil fuel consumption. Important policy implications are drawn from the results regarding the empirical results.

This study investigates the dynamic interdependence between CO2 emissions, real gross domestic product (GDP), renewable and non-renewable energy generation, urbanization, and export quality for both the top ten renewable energy and top ten economic complexity index (ECI) countries. The techniques of panel cointegration, long-run FMOLS, DOLS, and Granger causality are used spanning the period 1980–2014. Long-run estimates suggest that, for the top ten renewable energy countries, only renewable energy generation contributes to mitigating CO2 emissions, while the other variables lead to increase emissions levels in the long-run. However, for the case of leading complex economies, the empirics highlighted the significant role of renewable energy in carbon mitigation. Exports quality leads to decrease emissions level and real GDP, non-renewable energy and urbanization contribute to the rise in emissions. Interestingly, for the top ten renewable energy countries, Granger causality analysis mentioned a two-ways short-run relationship between renewable energy generation and export quality and one-way causality from export quality to CO2 emissions. The findings mention that adopting clean technologies using renewable energy might act as a key tool for export quality improvement and mitigation of CO2 emissions. Results are related to Sustainable Development Goals (SDG-7: using more renewable, affordable energy; SDG-8: sustainable economic growth and decent employment for all, SDG-13: regulating emissions and promoting renewable energy) and discussed in this sense.

Air quality (AQ) is gaining considerable visibility within the tourism sector. However, despite several studies analysing the impact of tourism activities on the AQ of destinations, little is known about the inverse relation. This paper analyses the role of AQ on travel planning and the factors influencing it, specifically the influence of environmentally friendly daily behaviours and concerns with AQ impacts on visitor health. To accomplish this, a questionnaire survey (N = 834) was carried out to visitors. Two Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and two multivariate regression models were used to identify the factors influencing the role of AQ in travel planning. Results reveal that despite AQ not having a substantial role in travel planning of tourism activities, the environmentally friendly daily behaviours of visitors have a positive influence on the role of AQ in travel planning. The paper ends with some theoretical and practical implications.

Economics and business are a great background for data science provided econometricians and data scientists are sets with an intersection, although remaining unknown. In econometrics, data mining is somewhat a monstrous word, a field that traditionally seeks causal inference and results in interpretability. When we go deeper into what data science usually is, the boundaries between more traditional econometrics and even statistics and the hip and cool machine learning become shorter. In economics and business, we find examples and applications of simple and advanced data science techniques. This chapter intends to provide state-of-the-art data science applications in economics and business. The review and bibliometric analysis are limited to the research articles published through Elsevier Scopus. Results allowed the authors to conclude that despite the number of already existent research, a lot more remains to be explored joining both fields of knowledge, data since, and economics and business. This analysis allowed the authors to identify further possible avenues of research critically.

Using a sample of 47 Portuguese and Spanish firms for the period 2010 to 2017, the authors study the relationship between female presence on board and firm's accounting (ROA and ROE) and market-based (MTB and Tobin's Q) performance. They find that women on the board of directors is positively related to firm's performance, as well as the gender of the CFO and the proportion of women on the listed key professionals, when we consider the market measures of performance, not being so consistent for accounting performance measures. Results were sensitive to the performance measure used. The results reinforce the political options of European Commission gender established quotas, revealing that in the Iberian countries these quotas are not being effectively implemented, even if results suggest that women on board in fact exert positive influence over market performance. This also led us to think that financial markets may also react in a positive way when the CFO of the company is a woman instead of a man, despite the sample limitations both in terms of gender and number of firms.

A new time series model is proposed, allowing to test the hypotheses of neutrality, conservation, growth, or feedback hypothesis for a group of African countries included in OPEC (Algeria, Nigeria, Libya, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and Angola). The Autoregressive Distributed Lags (ARDL) unrestricted Error Correction Model (ECM) approach for the period of 1973–2017 is applied for this purpose. This allows us to examine the short and long-run dynamic impact of energy consumption, oil prices, trade openness, and urbanization on economic growth. Long-run results point to a positive impact of urbanization over GDP in only two countries, being negative in the other two. Oil price impact is positive over GDP in three of them, whereas trade openness drives positively GDP in Equatorial Guinea and Angola, while negatively in Algeria. Heterogeneous bidirectional causality is found for countries and variables. As well, short-run results are also country dependent. The bidirectional causalities findings highlight that variables can predict each other in the future and policymakers should be aware of this, especially accounting for results and sample heterogeneity. Results seem to validate the neutrality hypothesis, considering energy consumption and GDP.

Energy literacy is a useful tool that allows consumers to acquire the knowledge, desire, availability, and obliges to a personal commitment necessary for more efficient energy management. Knowledge about energy, the ability to perform financial calculations, attitude and behavior, all together allows evaluating the different aspects in which it may be necessary to intervene to make people more aware of the need to save energy and more available and receptive to change their energy consumption habits. Using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) we aim to create an energy literacy index, as well as the indices for each of the energy literacy dimensions and to determine which factors influence energy literacy levels. The results obtained allowed us to confirm the influence of gender in energy literacy, verifying that, although women have less knowledge, they demonstrate a more positive attitude and more correct behavior.

On the 27th of February 2015, it was published, in Portugal, the Regulation for Sustainability and Efficient Use of Resources (RESEUR). This is one of the thematic areas created of Portugal 2020, a partnership agreement between Portugal and the European Commission, that regulates the access to European Structural and Investment Funds. RESEUR frames different Investment Priorities (IP) and this research focus on the one that respects energy efficiency, intelligent energy management and the use of renewable energy in local government buildings, street lighting and social housing. We concluded that, despite there were, until now, 87 opportunities for proposal submission, only 46 % of the municipalities have approved projects and no more than 35 % of the budget for this IP is allocated. Until now, € 121 million were approved in this IP, with only 4.2 % meant to interventions in public buildings, although it is the intervention axis with a closer approach to Triple Bottom Line (TBL). Defining a “Decision Triangle” and introducing a political dimension in TBL, we verified that most of the approved projects and the funds allocated refer to social housing and street lighting, i.e. based on the available data there is no demand for TBL balance.

We examine the impact of various factors on the quality of environmental disclosure using a sample of listed companies in Portugal and Spain for the period 2010–2017 using the generalized method of moments (GMM) and adding a sustainability index created through principal component analysis (PCA). The econometric model has been used to show the practical implications of gender corporate governance (CG) indicators and the proposed index over the market and accounting-based performance measures. The study focuses on factors related to the strategy and vision of the firm, diversity within boards, and environmental factors. Results highlight that the presence of women on board increases both financial performance and sustainability practices, highly visible through market-based measures. Sustainability initiatives also increase financial performance which works also in the other way around. Still, sustainability practices by companies are highly dependent on their financial situation casting doubts on the effectiveness of the regulations obliging to insert certain types of measures within the company.
