Multilevel inverter is used in applications that need high voltage and high current. The topologies of multilevel inverter have several advantages such as lower total harmonic distortion (THD), lower electro magnetic interference (EMI) generation, high output voltage. The main feature of multilevel inverter is the ability to reduce the voltage stress on each power device due to the utilisation of multilevel on the DC bus. The advent of multilevel inverter topologies has caused variety of pulse width modulation strategies. In this paper, various carrier pulse width modulation techniques are proposed, which can minimise the total harmonic distortion and enhances the output voltages from five level inverter. Three methodologies adopting the constant switching frequency (CSF), variable switching frequency (VSF), and phase shifted pulse width modulation (PSPWM) concepts are proposed in this paper. The above methodologies divided into two techniques like subharmonic pulse width modulation which minimises total harmonic distortion and switching frequency optimal pulse width modulation which enhances the output voltages. Field programmable gate array (FPGA) has been chosen to implement the pulse width modulation due its fast proto typing, simple hardware and software design. The simulation and experimental results are presented.

An effective coordination in an interconnected system can be obtained by ensuring proper settings of overcurrent relays. In this research work, the problem of coordinating the overcurrent relays is formulated as a non‐linear problem, taking into account the as discrete nature of time dial settings and the pickup current settings. An effective approach based on adaptive differential evolution (ADE) algorithm is proposed to solve the coordination problem. The results obtained by ADE are compared with different algorithms on different model test systems and found to be feasible, robust and efficient.

An autonomous power generation system (APGS) contains units such as diesel energy generator, solar photovoltaic units, wind turbine generator and fuel cells along with energy-storing units such as the flywheel energy storage system and battery energy storage system. The components either run at lower/higher power output or may turn on/off at different instants of their operation. Due to this, the conventional controllers will not provide desired performance under varied load conditions. This paper proposes an adaptive fuzzy logic PID (AFPID) controller for load frequency control. In order to achieve an improved performance, a modified whale optimization algorithm (mWOA) was also proposed in this paper for tuning of the AFPID parameters. The proposed algorithm was first evaluated using standard test functions and compared with other recent algorithms to authenticate the competence of algorithm. The proposed mWOA algorithm outperforms PSO, GSA, DE and FEP algorithms in five out of seven unimodal test functions and four out of six multimodal test functions. The effectiveness of the AFPID compared with the conventional PID and the proposed AFPID provides better performance. Reduction of 39.13% in error criteria (objective function) compared with WOA-PID controller. The proposed approach was also compared with some recently proposed frequency control approaches in a widely used two-area test system.

Maximum Power Point Trackers (MPPTs) are power electronic conditioners used in photovoltaic (PV) system to ensure that PV structures feed maximum power for the given ambient temperature and sun’s irradiation. When the PV panels are shaded by a fraction due to any environment hindrances then, conventional MPPT trackers may fail in tracking the appropriate peak power as there will be multi power peaks. In this work, a shuffled frog leap algorithm (SFLA) is proposed and it successfully identifies the global maximum power point among other local maxima. The SFLA MPPT is compared with a well-entrenched conventional perturb and observe (P&O) MPPT algorithm and a global search particle swarm optimisation (PSO) MPPT. The simulation results reveal that the proposed algorithm is highly advantageous than P&O, as it tracks nearly 30% more power for a given shading pattern. The credible nature of the proposed SFLA is ensured when it outplays PSO MPPT in convergence. The whole system is realised in MATLAB/Simulink environment.
