Luca Lo Piccolo received his PhD from the University of Palermo, Italy, in 2011. He has been involved in biomedical research since 2013. In 2015-2017, he joined Prof Yamaguchi’s laboratory at the Kyoto Institute of Technology (KIT) as a long-term JSPS fellow to generate and functionally characterize new Drosophila models of ALS. Wishing to focus on the link between nuclear RNA granules, stress response, and ALS pathogenesis, in 2018, he obtained funding at the Department of Neurotherapeutics, Osaka University, under the mentorship of Professor Nagai. Here, he contributed to understanding the role of satellite non-coding RNA in regulating the post-translational modification of the ALS-causative FUS protein. In March 2020, he started as a group leader at the Center of Multidisciplinary Technology for Advanced Medicine (CMUTEAM), Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University, Thailand. Here, he is currently investigating the pathogenic mechanism of microsatellites and repeat-expansion-associated diseases in ALS and familial myoclonic epilepsy (BAFME).
