Efficient coordination of directional overcurrent relays (DOCRs) is vital for maintaining the stability and reliability of electrical power systems (EPSs). The task of optimizing DOCR coordination in complex power networks is modeled as an optimization problem. This study aims to enhance the performance of protection systems by minimizing the cumulative operating time of DOCRs. This is achieved by effectively synchronizing primary and backup relays while ensuring that coordination time intervals (CTIs) remain within predefined limits (0.2 to 0.5 s). A novel optimization strategy, the fractional-order derivative war optimizer (FODWO), is proposed to address this challenge. This innovative approach integrates the principles of fractional calculus (FC) into the conventional war optimization (WO) algorithm, significantly improving its optimization properties. The incorporation of fractional-order derivatives (FODs) enhances the algorithm’s ability to navigate complex optimization landscapes, avoiding local minima and achieving globally optimal solutions more efficiently. This leads to the reduced cumulative operating time of DOCRs and improved reliability of the protection system. The FODWO method was rigorously tested on standard EPSs, including IEEE three, eight, and fifteen bus systems, as well as on eleven benchmark optimization functions, encompassing unimodal and multimodal problems. The comparative analysis demonstrates that incorporating fractional-order derivatives (FODs) into the WO enhances its efficiency, enabling it to achieve globally optimal solutions and reduce the cumulative operating time of DOCRs by 3%, 6%, and 3% in the case of a three, eight, and fifteen bus system, respectively, compared to the traditional WO algorithm. To validate the effectiveness of FODWO, comprehensive statistical analyses were conducted, including box plots, quantile–quantile (QQ) plots, the empirical cumulative distribution function (ECDF), and minimal fitness evolution across simulations. These analyses confirm the robustness, reliability, and consistency of the FODWO approach. Comparative evaluations reveal that FODWO outperforms other state-of-the-art nature-inspired algorithms and traditional optimization methods, making it a highly effective tool for DOCR coordination in EPSs.

In the evolution of the modern “More Electric Aircrafts” (MEAs) concept, higher-pulse rectification systems using differential fork autotransformers play a pivotal role. These systems align with the MEAs concept, which aims to replace traditional hydraulic and pneumatic systems with electric alternatives. The reason is that MEAs prioritize weight reduction to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. Higher-pulse rectifiers achieve this by minimizing losses and optimizing power conversion. Additionally, they mitigate harmonics, ensuring a clean power supply to critical avionic components. These systems also regulate voltage effectively, contributing to overall system stability. Furthermore, their compliance with IEEE-519 standards ensures their safe and efficient operation. Keeping in view the above applications, a comparative study of 12-, 18-, and 24-pulse rectification systems was carried out using different autotransformer topologies. The simulation and hardware results are presented for validation. The voltage and current waveforms were meticulously analyzed for each topology, emphasizing the pivotal role played by the differential fork autotransformer design. By quantifying the total harmonic distortion (THD) levels using MATLAB simulations, intriguing insights were revealed. Notably, the 24-pulse system emerged as the clear winner in harmonic mitigation, showcasing its superior waveform quality and reduced harmonic content. However, the 18-pulse configuration also exhibited a commendable performance, surpassing the 12-pulse counterpart.

In electrical power systems, ensuring a reliable, precise, and efficient relay strategy is crucial for safe and trustworthy operation, especially in multi-loop distribution systems. Overcurrent relays (OCRs) have emerged as effective solutions for these challenges. This study focuses on optimizing the coordination of OCRs to minimize the overall operational time of main relays, thereby reducing power outages. The optimization problem is addressed by adjusting the time multiplier setting (TMS) using the War Strategy Optimization (WSO) algorithm, which efficiently solves this constrained problem. This algorithm mimics ancient warfare strategies of attack and defense to solve complex optimization problems efficiently. The results show that WSO provides superior performance in minimizing total operating time and achieving global optimum solutions with reduced computational effort, outperforming traditional optimization methods (i.e., SM, HPSO, GA, RTO, and JAYA). The proposed algorithm shows a net time gains of 7.77 s, 2.57 s, and 0.8484 s when compared to GA, RTO, and JAYA respectively. This robust protection coordination ensures better reliability and efficiency in multi-loop power systems.

Soiling of solar panels has a considerable impact on the performance of photo voltaic (PV) systems, emphasizing the importance of developing reliable decision support tools for solar panel cleaning. Although recent convolutional neural network (CNN)-based models, including lightweight architectures such as SolPowNet, have demonstrated high classification accuracy, their performance can be sensitive to dataset variability and domain shifts encountered in real-world PV environments. Motivated by the lightweight design philosophy of SolPowNet, this paper proposes a hybrid and ensemble-based intelligent cleaning decision framework that integrates classical image processing, machine learning, and deep learning techniques. The proposed approach combines physically interpretable handcrafted texture and sharpness features classified using a Random Forest model with a pretrained MobileNetV3-Small CNN through a conservative OR-based ensemble fusion strategy. In addition, a probability-driven Soiling Index (SI) is introduced to translate classification confidence into actionable cleaning decisions, including no cleaning, light cleaning, and full cleaning. Experimental results on multiple PV image datasets demonstrate that, under domain-shift conditions where individual models may experience performance degradation, the proposed ensemble framework achieves an accuracy of up to 85.93% and attains a dusty-panel detection rate of 0.90 on the unseen dataset. On the in-distribution evaluation, the proposed OR-ensemble achieves an average accuracy of 0.9663 ± 0.0177 with dusty recall of 0.9896 ± 0.0104 over repeated stratified runs. Importantly, the conservative fusion strategy minimizes high-risk false negative cases while avoiding excessive misclassification of clean panels. Overall, the proposed framework offers a robust, scalable, and deployment-ready solution for intelligent PV cleaning decision support, advancing CNN-based soiling detection toward practical and risk-aware operation and maintenance systems.

This paper proposes a novel fractional-order African vulture optimization algorithm (FO-AVOA) for solving the optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) problem. By integrating fractional calculus into the conventional AVOA framework, the proposed method enhances the exploration–exploitation balance, accelerates convergence, and improves solution robustness. The ORPD problem is formulated as a constrained optimization task with the objective of minimizing real power losses while satisfying generator voltage limits, transformer tap ratios, and reactive power compensator constraints. The general optimization capability of the FO-AVOA is verified using the CEC 2017, 2020, and 2022 benchmark functions. In addition, the method is applied to the IEEE 30-bus and IEEE 57-bus test systems. The results demonstrate significant power loss reductions of up to 15.888% and 24.39% for the IEEE 30-bus and IEEE 57-bus systems, respectively, compared with the conventional AVOA and other state-of-the-art optimization algorithms, along with strong robustness and stability across independent runs. These findings confirm the effectiveness of the FO-AVOA as a reliable optimization tool for modern power system applications.

Dynamic edge-server allocation in mobile edge computing (MEC) networks is a challenging multi-objective optimization problem due to highly dynamic user demands, spatiotemporal traffic variations, and the need to simultaneously minimize service latency and workload imbalance. Existing heuristic and metaheuristic-based approaches for this problem often suffer from premature convergence, limited exploration–exploitation balance, and inadequate adaptability to dynamic network conditions, leading to suboptimal edge-server placement and inefficient resource utilization. Moreover, most existing methods lack memory-aware search mechanisms, which restrict their ability to capture long-term system dynamics. To address these limitations, this paper proposes a Fractional-Order Multi-Objective African Vulture Optimization Algorithm (FO-MO-AVOA) for dynamic edge-server allocation. By integrating fractional-order calculus into the standard multi-objective AVOA framework, the proposed method introduces long-memory effects that enhance convergence stability, search diversity, and adaptability to time-varying workloads. The performance of FO-MO-AVOA is evaluated using realistic MEC network scenarios and benchmarked against several well-established metaheuristic algorithms. Simulation outcomes reveal that FO-MO-AVOA achieves 40–46% lower latency, 38–45% reduction in workload imbalance, and up to 28–35% reduction in maximum workload compared to competing methods. Extensive experiments conducted on real-world telecom network data demonstrate that FO-MO-AVOA consistently outperforms state-of-the-art multi-objective optimization algorithms in terms of convergence behaviour, Pareto-front quality, and overall system performance.
