The paper investigates the joint design of transmit waveform and receive filter for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar in the presence of signal-dependent interference, subject to a peak-to-average-power ratio (PAPR) constraint as well as a waveform similarity constraint. Owing to this kind of signal dependence and constraints, the formulated optimization problem of output signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) maximization is NP-hard. To this end, an auxiliary variable is introduced to modify the problem and a primal-dual algorithm based on the block successive upper-bound minimization method of multipliers (BSUM-M) is developed to deal with the resulting problem. Moreover, an active set method (ASM) is exploited to solve the quadratic programming (QP) problem involved in each update procedure of the proposed BSUM-M algorithm. Numerical simulations are performed to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed algorithm over state-of-the-art methods in terms of the output SINR, beampattern, computational complexity, pulse compression and ambiguity properties

In this letter, we consider the problem of direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation with one-bit quantized array measurements. With analysis, it is shown that, under mild conditions the one-bit covariance matrix can be approximated by the sum of a scaled unquantized covariance matrix and a scaled identity matrix. Although the scaling parameters are unknown because of the extreme quantization, they do not affect the subspace-based DOA estimators. Specifically, the signal and noise subspaces can be straightforwardly determined through the eigendecomposition of the one-bit covariance matrix, without pre-processing such as unquantized covariance matrix reconstruction. With so-obtained subspaces, the most classical multiple signal classification (MUSIC) technique can be applied to determine the signal DOAs. The resulting method is thus termed as one-bit MUSIC. Thanks to the simplicity of this method, it can be very easily implemented in practical applications, whereas the DOA estimation performance is comparable to the case with unquantized covariance matrix reconstruction, as demonstrated by various simulations.

Dual-function radar-communication (DFRC) systems with Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) make efficient use of spectrum, while maintaining reliable robustness against multipath fading for communication and improved estimation accuracy for radar. Nevertheless, it would be costly to use a fully digital beamforming architecture, where each antenna is equipped with a radio frequency (RF) chain. This motivates us to consider hybrid beamforming for OFDM-DFRC system in this work. More specifically, the analog beamformer for the whole bandwidth and digital beamformer for each subcarrier are simultaneously designed, by jointly optimizing the spectral efficiency (SE) of communication and spatial spectrum matching error (SSME) of radar. To tackle the resulting optimization problem, a consensus alternating direction method of multipliers (consensus-ADMM) approach is devised. Further, in a practical sense, we consider the issue of hybrid transmit beamforming design with finite-resolution phase shifters, to facilitate economical implementation of the analog beamformer. Numerical simulations are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed schemes.

Designing the radar waveform, which ensures spectral compatibility with the communication systems, is known to be challenging. In addition to having the desirable transmitter efficiency, it is also anticipated to share the good pulse compression property of the reference waveform. In this paper, we investigate the problem of waveform design for multiple-input multiple-output radar with good transmit beampattern under certain practical constraints (e.g., peak to average power ratio and similarity constraints) in coexistence with communication systems. The waveform is designed by minimizing a weighted summation of the beampattern integrated sidelobe-to-mainlobe ratio and waveform energy over the space-frequency bands. Since the resulting problem is NP-hard, two approximated primal-dual algorithms based on the alternating direction method of multipliers algorithm are proposed. Concretely, the proposed algorithms update the primal variable by minimizing the linearized and quadratic approximations of the augmented Lagrangian function of the original problem, respectively. The closed-form solution of each primal variable is provided. Moreover, both the convergence and computational complexities of these two algorithms are discussed. Numerical simulations are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approaches.

In this paper, the problem of transmit sequence design for a dual-function radar-communication (DFRC) system equipped with one-bit digital-to-analog converters (DACs) is investigated. More specifically, a nonconvex problem is formulated by minimizing the symbol mean-square error, while ensuring the target localization performance for radar. A direct one-bit sequence design tackled by an alternating minimization (AM) approach, which involves a simple unconstrained quadratic sub-problem with closed-form solution and a quadratically constrained nonconvex sub-problem tackled by the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithm, is developed. The solutions of primal variables under the ADMM framework are provided and the convergence is discussed. Additionally, an indirect but computationally more efficient design, which is realized by transmit beamforming based on an accelerated primal gradient (APG) method, is presented. For better understanding of this design, both the Cramér-Rao Bound (CRB) and symbol error probability of the resulting beamformer with one-bit quantization using the Bussgang theorem are analyzed. Numerical simulations are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed schemes.
