The most widespread Sanguisorba species are Sanguisorba officinalis L. and Sanguisorba minor Scop. which are also found in the Romanian flora and classified as medicinal plants because of hemostatic, antibacterial, antitumor, antioxidant and antiviral activities. This study aimed to characterize and compare Sanguisorba species in order to highlight which species is more valuable according to phenolic profile and antimicrobial activity. Based on high-performance liquid chromatography equipped with photodiode array detection and mass spectrometry (electrospray ionization) (HPLC–DAD-MS (ESI+)) analysis, it was evident that the ethanol extract obtained from the leaves of S. minor Scop. contains the highest content of phenolic compounds at 160.96 mg/g p.s., followed by the flower and root extract (131.56 mg/g dw and 121.36 mg/g dw, respectively). While in S. officinalis, the highest amount of phenols was recorded in the root extract (127.06 mg/g), followed by the flower and leaves extract (102.31 mg/g and 81.09 mg/g dw, respectively). Our results show that among the two species, S. minor Scop. is richer in phenolic compounds compared with the S. officinalis L. sample. In addition, the antimicrobial potential of each plant organ of Sanguisorba species was investigated. The ethanol extract of S. minor Scop. leaves exhibited better antibacterial activity against all of the bacteria tested, especially on Staphylococcus aureus, with an inhibition zone of 15.33 ± 0.83 mm. Due to the chemical composition and antimicrobial effect, the Sanguisorba species can be used as food supplements with beneficial effects on human health.
There is growing interest from researchers, the food industry, and consumers in reducing or eliminating synthetic preservatives such as nitrites in meat products. In this context, medicinal plants have emerged as promising sources of natural compounds with multifunctional roles. This review summarizes recent advances in the application of medicinal plant extracts as natural antioxidants, antimicrobials, and color-preserving agents in the meat industry. A systematic literature search was conducted using the PubMed and Lens databases, complemented by a bibliometric analysis with the VOS viewer, to identify research trends and key contributors in the field. The incorporation of plant-based ingredients in meat and meat analogues has the potential to enhance flavor, nutritional value, and shelf life while responding to the demand for clean-label and health-oriented products. Particular attention is given to the phytochemical composition, bioactivity, and practical application of selected medicinal plants that have demonstrated efficacy in preserving the oxidative stability, microbial safety, and visual quality of meat. Furthermore, the review highlights emerging plant species with potential in meat preservation and discusses the challenges related to their incorporation into meat matrices. These findings support the strategic use of plant-based bioactive compounds as sustainable and functional alternatives to synthetic additives in meat systems.

Infections caused by Candida species account for a significant proportion of fungal infections affecting the vaginal mucosa. Traditional antifungal treatments have shown limited efficacy, which has led to the search for alternative products based on plant-derived extracts, which are often more effective and non-toxic according to existing research. Our research focused on the extraction of essential oil from Origanum vulgare L. and the evaluation of its antimicrobial properties, known for its high content of bioactive compounds such as carvacrol, which has proven antifungal effects. The Origanum vulgare L. plant was also analyzed through macro-and microscopic methods. The oregano oil was encapsulated in a liposomal formulation and evaluated for various properties, including appearance, surface charge, and particle size. The liposomal oil was then used to prepare vaginal suppositories, which were evaluated organoleptically and for their ability to release active compounds. Future work will include in vitro testing of the developed formulations, followed by in vivo evaluation.
Maintaining the health of the human body and increasing the quality of life have become central elements of interest in current research. Modern medicine emphasizes the fact that the health of the body and the increase in longevity are closely related to nutrition during the individual's life. Thus, the kombucha drink represents one of the functional foods extremely rich in active bio-compounds and microorganisms that have proven to be beneficial for health. In this review, the method of obt
Community and hospital pharmacists in Romania are valuable to healthcare, but their involvement in multidisciplinary teams is still not up to the mark when measured against international standards. A systematic literature review search was conducted using the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus databases, following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, complemented by a bibliometric analysis with VOSviewer, to identify research trends and key contributors in the field. This review examines studies such as counseling effectiveness, clinical contribution, and professional obstacles faced by pharmacists in Romania published between 2014 and 2025 that mainly focus on community practice, integration into hospitals, and new areas such as pharmacogenetics and pharmacovigilance. The studies surveyed patients on how they evaluated counseling, tracked clinical pharmacists who adjusted drug doses through therapeutic monitoring, checked whether healthcare professionals followed safety warnings, and checked management systems within institutions. High costs and the removal of pharmacovigilance from compulsory university courses add to the obstacles. Romanian pharmacists already possess the knowledge or skills to raise treatment success and shield patients from unsafe self-medication through timely clinical advice. To use this capacity fully, the system must change, including health insurance covering pharmaceutical services, compulsory updating of course content, and official interdisciplinary protocols for this potential to be fully exploited.
Due to their diverse phytochemical composition, medicinal plants belonging to the families Amaryllidaceae, Lamiaceae, and Myrtaceae possess antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. In this study, six ethanolic extracts of Allium ursinum, Allium sativum, Allium cepa, Salvia rosmarinus, Ocimum basilicum, and Syzygium aromaticum were analyzed by HS-SPME GC-MS and HPLC. Their chemical composition was evaluated and compared by chemometrics and their biological activity determined by an antimicrobial assay. A total of 72 compounds was detected (terpenoids, phenolic derivatives, fatty acids, and phytosterols). In Allium species, phytosterols were mainly abundant, whereas O. basilicum extracts were characterized by high contents of linalool and S. rosmarinus by 2-hydroxychalcone and 4-hydroxybutanoic acid lactone. Principal component analysis distinguished chemically species-specific chemical profiles, whilst the HPLC evaluation resulted in the highest quercetin content in S. rosmarinus extracts, which also displayed the best antibacterial effect against Staphylococcus aureus. Despite the observed correlation between the quercetin content and antibacterial activity, no definitive relation could be established without biological replicates, MIC evaluation, and tests with isolated compounds.
