As the boundary between the sea and the land, information on the location and type of coastline constantly changes with environmental changes in coastal zones. Monitoring of coastline changes in long time series becomes important for the monitoring and assessment of the coastal zone environment. In this study, Landsat series images from five time periods (1990, 2000, 2010, 2015, and 2020) were selected for monitoring and analyzing the changes in coastline length, sea–land pattern, the index of coastline diversity, and fractal dimension characteristics. Our conclusions are as follows: (1) The lengths of the entire coastline and the artificial coastline of mainland China increased from 30,041.22 km and 10,022.49 km in 1990 to 32,977.34 km and 17,660.84 km in 2020, with annual change rates of 97.87 km/year and 254.61 km/year, respectively. From 1990 to 2020, the rate of natural coastline decreased from 66.68% to 42.29%, and the artificial coastline increased from 33.32% to 57.71%. (2) The length of natural coastline decreased from 20,018.73 km to 15,316.5 km; among the types of natural coastline, the length of sandy coastline and bedrock coastline decreased the most, at 2062.95 km and 1815.8 km, respectively. (3) The coastal zone of mainland China had a significant increase in land area, with a net increase of about 10,902.55 km2. (4) The index of coastline diversity continued to decrease, and the coastline structure tended to be simple. The fractal dimension of the mainland coastline was consistent with the trend of the length of the coastline, which basically shows an increasing trend. Therefore, the length of the mainland coastline and artificial coastline displayed an upward trend between 1990 and 2020, which also led to simpler coastline diversity and more complex coastline shapes. Since the first year of the SDGs (2015), the growth rate of the artificial coastline has decreased by 158.32 km/year compared with that between 2010 and 2015. In recent years, China has enacted a number of laws, regulations, and action plans to protect its coastline, and it has proposed that by 2020, the proportion of natural coastline will be no less than 35%. The rapid development of China’s coastal areas drives the construction of coastal zone cities but also creates a variety of challenges for the ecological environment of the coastal zone, and the management and sustainable use of the mainland coastline resources should be further strengthened.

The Xixia Imperial Tombs (XITs) represent a crucial, yet still largely mysterious, component of the Tangut civilization’s legacy. Located in northwestern China, this extensive necropolis offers invaluable insights into the Tangut state, culture, and burial practices. This study employs an integrated approach utilizing multi-resolution and multi-temporal satellite remote sensing data, including Gaofen-2 (GF-2), Landsat-8 OLI, declassified GAMBIT imagery, and Google Earth, combined with deep learning techniques, to conduct a comprehensive archaeological investigation of the XITs’ burial landscape. We performed geomorphological analysis of the surrounding environment and automated identification and mapping of burial mounds and mausoleum features using YOLOv5, complemented by manual interpretation of very-high-resolution (VHR) satellite imagery. Spectral indices and image fusion techniques were applied to enhance the detection of archaeological features. Our findings demonstrated the efficacy of this combined methodology for archaeology prospect, providing valuable insights into the spatial layout, geomantic considerations, and preservation status of the XITs. Notably, the analysis of declassified GAMBIT imagery facilitated the identification of a suspected true location for the ninth imperial tomb (M9), a significant contribution to understanding Xixia history through remote sensing archaeology. This research provides a replicable framework for the detection and preservation of archaeological sites using readily available satellite data, underscoring the power of advanced remote sensing and machine learning in heritage studies.

The arid region of Northwest China (ARNWC) faces severe desertification, posing a major threat to ecological sustainability and socio-economic development. However, systematic evaluation of desertification across the entire northwestern arid zone remains limited. To address the uncertainty caused by mixed pixels in sparsely vegetated drylands, this study innovatively integrates vegetation and soil indices to develop a robust machine learning-based system for classifying desertification levels in the ARNWC over three decades. In addition, the geographical detector method is employed to quantify the driving factors influencing desertification. The key findings are as follows: (1) Desertification expansion predominantly occurred between 1990 and 1995, followed by a gradual improvement from 1995 to 2020. Transitions between severe and moderate desertification were the most frequent, with approximately 15 × 104 km2 shifting from severe to moderate desertification. (2) Physiographic factors were the primary drivers of changes in desertification level, followed by climatic factors. Fractional Vegetation Cover (FVC) had the strongest influence, with an average q-value of 0.72. (3) The explanatory power of the drivers increased significantly through interactions, with the combination of FVC and evaporation (EVA) showing the most pronounced effect. Overall, the methods and findings of this study provide critical insights for targeted desertification control and ecological restoration strategies in arid regions. Although this approach primarily captures desertification symptoms related to surface cover, it offers a valuable long-term perspective on surface cover dynamics.

In the context of global climate change and China’s dual-carbon strategy, this analysis examines how land-use transition is associated with land-use carbon effects in China’s resource-based cities. From the perspective of urban development stages, an analytical framework is built by linking development stage, land-use structure, and carbon source–sink structure. Using 262 resource-based cities from 2011 to 2023, we estimate land-use-related carbon emissions, carbon sequestration, and net land-use carbon effects with the carbon emission coefficient method and analyze their spatiotemporal patterns and driving factors using GeoDetector. The results show clear differences among city types. Mature cities form the largest group. Growth cities show the fastest expansion of impervious surfaces, while regenerative cities present signs of ecological recovery. This suggests that land-use transition is not simply the expansion of impervious surfaces, but a stage-dependent process of structural change. Land-use carbon effects also differ across stages. Mature cities maintain high and stable carbon-source effects. Growth cities exhibit increasing carbon-source effects, declining cities show reduced emissions but limited improvement in the carbon source–sink structure, and regenerative cities show improved carbon-sink capacity under ecological restoration. Overall, net land-use carbon effects follow a rise–decline–rebound pattern and show clear spatial heterogeneity and visually apparent clustering patterns. Population size has strong explanatory power, while interactions between socioeconomic and land-use factors further shape spatial differences. These results support stage-specific low-carbon transition strategies.

Long-term monitoring of land cover dynamics is essential for evaluating conservation outcomes in World Heritage sites, yet remains challenging in conflict-affected regions with limited field observations. This study aims to reconstruct annual land cover dynamics and assess forest sustainability in the Okapi Wildlife Reserve (OWR), a World Heritage site in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Using Landsat dense time series observations (2000–2023), the Continuous Change Detection and Classification (CCDC) algorithm, landscape metrics, and the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15.1.1 indicator, we developed an annual scale framework to quantify land cover changes and conservation status. The results showed that forest loss was the dominant land cover change process, with degradation accelerating after 2013. Forest disturbances were spatially heterogeneous, mainly concentrated in the boundary buffer zone and along National Road No. 4, while localized disturbances also occurred within the core protected area. Landscape fragmentation increased during the study period, and SDG 15.1.1 trends revealed differentiated conservation pressures among management zones. This study provides an annual-scale land cover history of the OWR and demonstrates the potential of Earth observation for monitoring endangered World Heritage sites.
