Professor Ruml is a head of the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology at the University of Chemistry and Technology (UTC) Prague. After graduation in Biological Sciences in 1984 at the Prague Institute of Chemical Technology (Study of thiamine excretion in mutants of Saccharomyces cerevisiae), the career path brought him to the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology of UTC Prague, where he remains to this day (head of Laboratory of molecular biology and microbiology). Research interests of Prof. Ruml can be summarized as follows: (1) structures, interactions, targeting, and assembly of retroviral proteins. (2) Developed a fundamental method for in vitro assembly of retroviral particles, which represents a basic technology used in numerous prestigious laboratories worldwide. (3) Activity of molecules and nanoparticles for photodynamic therapy. (4) Biological effects of molecules and materials onhuman cells. (5) Bioprospection: analysis of medicinally beneficial effects of marine and plant resources. Scientific outcomes of these interests are represented by 206 WoS papers with well over 3000 citations. In 2014, Prof. Ruml was also awarded, by the rector of UCT Prague, the award “for outstanding research and successful promotion of science”. Prof. Ruml is active in connecting scientists worldwide, which was reflected by the Vietnamese president's award "for significant contribution to understanding between nations".
