The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the maternal serum levels of pregnancy-specific beta-1-glycoprotein 1 (PSG1) and preeclampsia, and to compare levels of PSG1 in pregnancies with preeclampsia and uneventful pregnancies. A case-control study was conducted in a research and training hospital. A total of 40 women with preeclampsia and 42 healthy pregnant women who were gestational age-matched were included. Serum PSG1 levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The maternal serum PSG1 levels were significantly lower in patients with preeclampsia compared with controls (11.60 ± 8.08 vs. 17.58 ± 9.72 ng/mL, p = .003). Circulating PSG1 levels were negatively correlated with age in the preeclampsia and control groups (r = –0.322, p = .043), (r = –0.430, p = .005). PSG1 levels, age, blood urea nitrogen levels and birth weight were significantly associated with high odds of having preeclampsia. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis confirmed that the area under ROC curve was 0.707 (95% CI: [0.595–0.819], p < .001) for PSG1. The optimal cut-off value of PSG1 for detecting preeclampsia was ≤ 11.80 ng/mL. There may be a decrease in PSG1 production in preeclampsia-complicated pregnancies where there are pathologies related to placenta formation. A decline in PSG1 concentrations may reflect placental dysfunction.

Introduction: Epidermoid cysts can occur in a variety of locations including face, trunk, neck, extremities and scalp. Up to now, those vulvar epidermal cysts reported in the literature were localized on the labia majora and the clitoris. This is the first case of epidermal cyst reported on the labia minora. Presentation of case: A 47-year-old, multiparous woman presented with a history of a palpable vulvar mass, without pain but causing difficulty in walking. The large mass was 6 cm in diameter and located in the left labium minus. The labial mass was surgically removed. The final pathologic diagnosis was a vulvar epidermoid cyst. The patient was discharged from hospital without any complications. Discussion: Total surgical excision of the mass is more appropriate for definitive histopathological diagnosis and for the prevention of future development of complications. MRI is very important in the localization of the mass and relationship with other tissues regarding treatment planning of larger vulvar masses. Conclusion: Epidermal cysts should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a vulvar mass. Highlights:

Neuregulin 4 (NRG4) is an adipokine that is synthesized in many tissues and has been shown to be associated with the development of obesity and metabolic disorders in animals and humans. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between serum NRG4 levels and various metabolic parameters in women with PCOS. This cross-sectional study included 40 women with PCOS and 40 age- and BMI-matched controls without PCOS. NRG4, fasting blood glucose (FBG), insulin, hs-CRP, LDL-C, HDL-C, SHBG, DHEA-SO4 and total-testosterone levels were measured in all the participants. HOMA-IR was used to calculate the insulin resistance. Serum NRG4 levels were higher in women with PCOS than in healthy women (24.89 ± 9.32 [ng/mL] vs. 18.98 ± 6.40 [ng/mL], p = 0.002). FBG, LDL-C, HDL-C, LH, SHBG, FAI, DHEA-SO4, insulin, hs-CRP, HOMA-IR and total-testosterone levels were significantly higher in women with PCOS than controls. Circulating NRG4 levels were positively correlated with HOMA-IR, insulin and hs-CRP for both groups. There was a positive correlation between NRG4 and FBG in the PCOS group. HOMA-IR and hs-CRP were associated with NRG4. The high concentration of circulating NRG4 in PCOS may be associated with insulin resistance and low-grade chronic inflammation. We hypothesised that apoptosis in the placenta is increased in pregnant women whose pregnancies were complicated by pre-eclampsia as compared to normal pregnant women. Biopsy samples were obtained by punch biopsy from placental beds in 15 pre-eclamptic and 15 normotensive pregnant women during cesarean section. Apoptosis in syncytiotrophoblasts, syncytial cluster, extravillous cytotrophoblast, and decidual and stromal cells were evaluated by caspase-3, bax and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated deoxyuridine triphosphate nick end-labelling (TUNEL) immunohistochemical methods. A significant involvement was observed via caspase-3 and TUNEL methods in the syncytiotrophoblasts, syncytial cluster and extravillous cytotrophoblast cells of the pre-eclamptic group versus normotensive group (p < 0.001). Caspase-3 method found significantly increased involvement in the pre-eclamptic group versus normotensive group (p < 0.001). Although bax method found significantly increased involvement in syncytiotrophoblasts in the pre-eclamptic group versus normotensive group (p < 0.001), no significant difference was found between the groups in terms of involvement of other cell groups (p > 0.05). Apoptosis in the placental bed is increased in pre-eclamptic woman.

Purpose: Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a multifunctional cytokine that plays a role in metabolic and inflammatory processes. Increasing evidence suggests that there is a link between MIF and ovulation. We aimed to evaluate plasma MIF levels in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and to determine whether MIF levels differ between the follicular phase and mid-cycle of the menstrual cycle in eumenorrheic women. Methods: Ninety women with PCOS and 80 age- and BMI-matched healthy eumenorrheic women were consecutively recruited into this prospective observational study. For all subjects, plasma MIF levels in the early follicular phase were measured by ELISA; for the 40 healthy controls, MIF levels were also measured during mid-cycle of the same menstrual cycle. Results: Plasma MIF levels were significantly higher in women with PCOS than in eumenorrheic women (14.16 ± 1.59 vs. 10.39 ± 0.70 ng/ml; p < 0.001). MIF levels were significantly higher at mid-cycle than in the follicular phase in eumenorrheic women (11.15 ± 0.61 vs. 10.56 ± 0.82 ng/ml; p < 0.001). MIF was positively correlated with BMI, high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) in both groups. MIF was positively correlated with luteinizing hormone (LH) and free-testosterone only in the PCOS group. Binary logistic regression analyses revealed that the odds ratio (OR) for PCOS independently increases linearly with elevated MIF (OR = 1.385, 95% CI = 1.087–1.764, p = 0.017). Conclusion: MIF may play a crucial role in the reproductive system in women, including the development of PCOS and normal ovulation.

This study was aimed to compare serum urocortin-3 (UCN3) levels in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and healthy women, and establish what role UCN3 levels play in PCOS. Fifty-two patients with PCOS and 55 healthy women were included in the study, matched for age and body mass index. Fasting blood glucose (FBG), insulin, hs-CRP, UCN3 and free-testosterone levels of the all participants were measured. HOMA-IR was used to calculate the insulin resistance. Circulating UCN3 levels were significantly increased in women with PCOS than in control subjects (54.49 ± 5.77 versus 51.28 ± 5.86 pmol/l, p = 0.005). Serum insulin, hs-CRP and HOMA-IR levels were higher in women with PCOS than in control group. UCN3 levels positively correlated with hs-CRP in PCOS group (r = 0.391, p = 0.004). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis showed that the area under the ROC curves were 0.732 (95% CI 0.634–0.830, p < 0.001) for UCN3 levels. The optimal cut-off value of UCN3 for detecting PCOS was ≥51.46 pmol/l, at which the sensitivity was 75% and specificity was 68%. Our results suggest that there is a potential link between PCOS and UCN3 levels. The results of this study support the presence of increased UCN3 levels for the association of inflammation with PCOS.
