Excessive exploitation and massive coal mine closures have brought about extensive goafs in Shanxi where 8780 coal mines have been abandoned in the last 20 years. Acid mine drainage (AMD) poses severe environmental impact and has become a prominent problem in Shanxi abandoned coal mine areas, which has aggravated the shortage of water resources and threatened the safety of the local drinking water supply. The purpose of this review is to protect the precious water resources and maintain sustainable use in Shanxi coal mines and downstream. By retrieving and analyzing about 90 domestic and international publications, a critical review of the AMD research results in Shanxi abandoned coal mines is conducted from the perspective of the formation mechanism, migration and transformation, prediction, treatment and management. The results shows that pyrite is the prerequisite for the formation of AMD, oxygen is the inducement, water is the carrier, and Fe3+ and microorganisms are the catalyst. The roadway system and geological structure are the dominant control factors. Finally, current difficulties and future research are pointed out. It is necessary to further strengthen the systematic research on the geological and hydrogeological conditions of abandoned coal mines, and explore an efficient, cheap, environmental technology, and construct the pollution risk assessment model for the AMD treatment. This study provides a scientific basis for the comprehensive treatment and management of AMD in abandoned coal mines in Shanxi.

Underground mining severely lowers the water table and worsens the ecological environment. To determine the mechanism influencing drawdown in unconsolidated aquifers induced by deep mining combined with overburden movement, with a view to environmental protection, physical simulations for three different depths were designed to investigate and contrast deformation and fracture distribution characteristics at diverse depths after mining. The impacts on overlying unconsolidated aquifers were then analyzed by monitoring overburden movement and ground water level data, and the deformation limit was estimated. Modeling results indicated that coal mining had different impacts on the overlying unconsolidated aquifer via various mechanisms of groundwater level reduction. The aquifer outside the fractured water-conducting zone could be affected by coal mining, and the water tables dropped rapidly. The failure and the deformation features of the aquitard floor were the key to revealing the mechanism of groundwater depletion in deep mining. The effects on aquitard decreased as the distance from the working face increased. A relationship between the strata deformation and the drawdown rate was established; that is, the rate of decline of the groundwater level did not accelerate until the maximum subsidence of the aquitard floor exceeded approximately 0.9 m, or the subsidence-bending area of the aquitard floor exceeded approximately 156 m2.
The traditional flood season division method is cumbersome. In order to make the flood season division elaborate, the Mann–Kendall and cumulative sum of rank difference (CSD) methods were used to detect the abrupt change year of precipitation (p) over the study area from 1969 to 2015. The year of change was determined to be 1995. Taking the 1995 year as a demarcation point of the data, the discriminant model and Fisher optimal partition method were applied for flood division, and a comparison of the results from the two approaches were compared. The discriminant model was found to perform slightly better than the Fisher approach. It was found that abrupt rainfall change has a certain influence on flood season division. The main flood season in the Zhangjia Zhuang reservoir during 1969–2015 was 16 days longer than during 1996–2015, but three days shorter than between 1969–1995. For the Zhangjia Zhuang Reservoir, the flood water level limit can increase up to 2 m according to the results of the flood season division and designed rainfall after abrupt change; in addition, the water storage capacity is 469 million m³ more than that of the traditional reservoir operation mode.
