Health monitoring is an essential part of condition-based maintenance and prognostics and health management for gas turbines. Various health monitoring systems have been developed based on the measurement and observation of the fault symptoms including turbine performance parameters such as heat rate, and nonperformance symptoms such as structural vibration. This paper focuses on surveying state-of-the-art condition monitoring, diagnostic and prognostic techniques using performance parameters acquired from gas-path data that are mostly available from the operating systems of gas turbines. Performance parameters and the corresponding effective factors are presented in the beginning. Structure of performance monitoring and diagnostic systems are systematically laid out next, and the recent developments in each section are surveyed and discussed. Observing the importance of the prognostics in the recent trend of health monitoring research, an emphasis is given on the prognostic frameworks and their implementation for the remaining useful life prediction. A conclusion along with a brief discussion on the current state and potential future directions is provided at the end.

This paper suggests the correlation information, hidden in spatial configuration and temporal dynamic of frequencies, is an important indication for bearing health condition. To consider this information, we extend graph-modeling strategy, and introduce a bearing fault detection and diagnosis technique based on temporal-spatio graph. First, short-time periodogram is extracted from vibration signal, and then modeled by a temporal-spatio graph. In fault detection phase, the spectrum of temporal channel graph is used to map short-time periodogram to acquire the so-called graph-mapped spectrum (GMS). The principal frequency in resulting GMS is found highly related with the health condition of monitored bearing. Thus, any change of health condition can be detected by checking this principal frequency over time. Once a fault is detected, the spatio channel graph is fed to K-Nearest Neighbor classifier, coupled with a specific graph distance metric, for fault type identification. Comprehensive experiments on two benchmarking data sets along with theoretical interpretation demonstrate the superiority of proposed method over state-of-the-arts. The proposed temporal-spatio graph provides a signif- icant extension of existing spectrum analysis for fault detection and diagnosis.

Monitoring data contain the important status information of the monitored object, and are the basis for following data mining and analysis. However, the monitoring data usually suffer the pollution of the outliers, leading to negative effect on the subsequent data processing. To address the problem, this paper proposed an outlier detection method based on stacked autoencoder (SAE). SAE has a powerful capability of feature extraction and greatly preserves the original information of the data. The trained SAE by normal data can learn the characteristics of normal data. When a set of data with outliers are inputted to the trained network, there are larger reconstruction errors at the outliers between the original input data and the reconstructed data obtained by using the encoding parameters and the decoding parameter mapping, which provides a basis for locating outliers. Meanwhile, this paper introduced the Grubbs criterion and the PauTa criterion to identify the reconstruction errors corresponding to the outliers based on the traditional threshold method. The method can quickly isolate the abnormal data from the normal data according to the reconstruction error and the identification criterion. The effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method have been validated by experiment on real data and comparisons with traditional outlier detection algorithms.

Detection of structural changes in machine state attracts increasing attention for the monitoring and prognosis of rotating machinery. Very recently, the graph model has been introduced and adopted for modeling of normal machine state so as to investigate the likelihood of potential changes by the use of Martingale-test. This paper expands the potential of the graph model toward correlation-analysis-based monitoring applications, where the problem of measuring graph similarity is the main challenge due to domain specificity. We first investigated six typical schemes taken from other areas for this purpose, and found that they show discriminative capacities when dealing with changes with different types in the machine condition monitoring scenarios. Subsequently, based on a procedure called “method of ranks,” we have chosen four schemes among them which are potentially promising for our usage. Meanwhile, based on these metrics, two machine learning based similarity metrics are proposed to further improve their practical values by combining them. At last, comprehensive theoretical interpretations and comparisons of presented methods are made both in simulated scenarios and real-engineering monitoring applications.
