Polymeric nanoparticle suspension is a newly developed oil-displacing agent for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in low-permeability reservoirs. In this work, SiO2/P(MBAAm-co-AM) polymeric nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by a simple distillation–precipitation polymerization method. Due to the introduction of polymer, the SiO2/P(MBAAm-co-AM) nanoparticles show a favorable swelling performance in aqueous solution, and their particle sizes increase from 631 to 1258 nm as the swelling times increase from 24 to 120 h. The apparent viscosity of SiO2/P(MBAAm-co-AM) suspension increases with an increase of mass concentration and swelling time, whereas it decreases as the salinity and temperature increase. The SiO2/P(MBAAm-co-AM) suspension behaves like a non-Newtonian fluid at lower shear rates, yet like a Newtonian fluid at shear rates greater than 300 s−1. The EOR tests of the SiO2/P(MBAAm-co-AM) suspension in heterogeneous, low-permeability cores show that SiO2/P(MBAAm-co-AM) nanoparticles can effectively improve the sweep efficiency and recover more residual oils. A high permeability ratio can result in a high incremental oil recovery in parallel cores. With an increase of the permeability ratio of parallel cores from 1.40 to 15.49, the ratios of incremental oil recoveries (low permeability/high permeability) change from 7.69/4.61 to 23.61/8.46. This work demonstrates that this SiO2/P(MBAAm-co-AM) suspension is an excellent conformance control agent for EOR in heterogeneous, low-permeability reservoirs. The findings of this study can help to further the understanding of the mechanisms of EOR using SiO2/P(MBAAm-co-AM) suspension in heterogeneous, low-permeability reservoirs.

The evolutions of the microstructure characteristics and the combustion reactivity of lignite during high temperature drying process at 600–800°C were addressed in the paper. The information about the oxygen functional groups, carbon skeleton, pore structure, and combustion reactivity of the lignite before and after the drying treatment was obtained by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller technique, Raman spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analyzer, respectively. The results show that a different evolutionary trend of the chemical structure of the lignite appears at the high drying temperature of 700°C at which the carbonyl, carboxyl, and carboxylate significantly decomposed and the treatment gave a slight elimination of structural imperfections and the formation of new cross-linking structures. Then, at the drying temperature of 800°C, a slight increase of the oxygen functional groups was found. The break of the aromatic ring or heterocycle contributed to the rapid increase of amorphous carbon to some extent. During the drying process, the surface area of the resulted lignite gradually increased until 700°C and then decreased. The evolution may be attributed to the decomposition of organic compounds, shrinkage forces, and thermal relaxation effect. The investigation indicates that the change in chemical nature of the coal had a greater impact on the combustion reactivity than the internal pore structure did. In addition, the combustion intensity and performance of the treated lignite was enhanced by the drying process.

Long-term polymer flooding exacerbates reservoir heterogeneity, intensifying intra- and inter-layer conflicts, which makes it difficult to recover the remaining oil. Therefore, further improvement in oil recovery after polymer flooding is essential. In this study, a weak gel system was successfully synthesized, and possesses a distinct network structure that becomes more compact as the concentration of partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide increases. The network structure of the weak gel system provides excellent shear resistance, with its apparent viscosity significantly higher than that of partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide solution. The weak gel system exhibits typical pseudo-plastic behavior, which is a non-Newtonian fluid as well as a viscoelastic fluid. Additionally, the weak gel system’s elasticities exceed its viscosities, and longer crosslinking time further enhances the viscoelasticity. The weak gel system achieves superior conformance control and enhanced oil recovery in highly heterogeneous reservoirs compared to partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide solutions. The weak gel system is more suited to low-permeability reservoirs with strong heterogeneity, as its effectiveness in conformance control and oil recovery increases with greater reservoir heterogeneity. Enhanced oil recoveries of the weak gel system in low-permeability sandpacks increase from 22% to 48% with a rise in permeability ratios from 14.39 to 35.64 after polymer flooding.

Curing minor leaks and restoring the integrity of a wellbore in a safe and economical way is always challenging in oil and gas production. In this work, a composite pressure-activated sealant, combined with liquid and solid sealing materials, was prepared via the demulsification approach. The structure, morphology, and size distribution of key particulates in the sealant were examined, and the in-situ self-adaptive sealing property was examined with a specially design dynamic sealing detector. The results indicated that the pressure-activated sealant was a multi-dispersed phase system, and the dispersed colloid particles were regular in shape and had a narrow size distribution of 300–400 μm. The solid sealing materials were introduced to construct a composite pressure-activated sealant, and the sealing capability can be markedly reinforced by cooperativity of liquid and solid sealing materials. A mechanochemical coupling model was put forward to rationalize the dynamic sealing process. Finally, such sealant system was employed in a certain offshore gas well with sustained casing pressure to verify its applicability in minor defect repairs.

The nanoparticles dispersion system has complex migration characteristics and percolation law in porous media due to the interaction between the nanoparticles and porous media. In this paper, lab experiments were carried out to characterize the morphology, particle size distributions, and apparent viscosities of SiO2/P(MBAAm-co-AM) polymeric nanoparticle solution, investigate its migration characteristics in porous media, and probe its capability of enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in the reservoirs. Quartz microtubule, sand pack, and etched glass micromodels were used as the porous media in the flow and flooding experiments. Gray image-processing technology was applied to achieve oil saturation at different flooding stages in the micromodel for calculating the EOR of the SiO2/P(MBAAm-co-AM) polymeric nanoparticle solution. The results show that The SiO2/P(MBAAm-co-AM) polymeric nanoparticles are spherical with diameters ranging from 260 to 300 nm, and the thicknesses of the polymeric layers are in the range of 30–50 nm. As the swelling time increases from 24 to 120 h, the medium sizes of the SiO2/P(MBAAm-co-AM) polymeric nanoparticles increase from 584.45 to 1142.61 nm. The flow of the SiO2/P(MBAAm-co-AM) polymeric nanoparticles has obvious nonlinear characteristics and a prominent scale effect at a low-pressure gradient, and there should be an optimal matching relationship between its injection mass concentration and the channel size. The flow tests in the sand packs demonstrate that the SiO2/P(MBAAm-co-AM) polymeric nanoparticles can form effective plugging in the main flow channels at different permeability areas and can break through at the throat to fulfill the step-by-step profile control. Moreover, the profile control of the SiO2/P(MBAAm-co-AM) polymeric nanoparticles strengthens with an increase in their swelling time. The microscopic flooding experiment in the etched glass micromodel confirms that the SiO2/P(MBAAm-co-AM) polymeric nanoparticles can block dynamically and alternatively the channels of different sizes with the form of loose or dense networks to adjust the fluid flow diversion, improve the sweep efficiency, and recover more residual oil. The SiO2/P(MBAAm-co-AM) polymeric nanoparticles can achieve an enhanced oil recovery of 20.71% in the micromodel.

Volume fracturing is a key technology in developing unconventional gas reservoirs that contain nano/micron pores. Different fracture structures exert significantly different effects on shale gas production, and a fracture structure can be learned only in a later part of detection. On the basis of a multiscale gas seepage model considering diffusion, slippage, and desorption effects, a three-dimensional finite element algorithm is developed. Two finite element models for different fracture structures for a shale gas reservoir in the Sichuan Basin are established and studied under the condition of equal fracture volumes. One is a tree-like fracture, and the other is a lattice-like fracture. Their effects on the production of a fracture network structure are studied. Numerical results show that under the same condition of equal volumes, the production of the tree-like fracture is higher than that of the lattice-like fracture in the early development period because the angle between fracture branches and the flow direction plays an important role in the seepage of shale gas. In the middle and later periods, owing to a low flow rate, the production of the two structures is nearly similar. Finally, the lattice-like fracture model is regarded as an example to analyze the factors of shale properties that influence shale gas production. The analysis shows that gas production increases along with the diffusion coefficient and matrix permeability. The increase in permeability leads to a larger increase in production, but the decrease in permeability leads to a smaller decrease in production, indicating that the contribution of shale gas production is mainly fracture. The findings of this study can help better understand the influence of different shapes of fractures on the production in a shale gas reservoir.
