Rotating machinery has extensive industrial applications, and rolling element bearing (REB) is one of the core parts. To distinguish the incipient fault of bearing before it steps into serious failure is the main task of condition monitoring and fault diagnosis technology which could guarantee the reliability and security of rotating machinery. The early defect occurring in the REB is too weak and manifests itself in heavy surrounding noise, thus leading to the inefficiency of the fault detection techniques. Aiming at the vibration signal purification and promoting the potential of defects detection, a new method is proposed in this paper based on the combination of singular value decomposition (SVD) technique and squared envelope spectrum (SES). The kurtosis of SES (KSES) is employed to select the optimal singular component (SC) obtained by applying SVD to vibration signal, which provides the information of the REB for fault diagnosis. Moreover, the rolling bearing accelerated life test with the bearing running from normal state to failure is adopted to evaluate the performance of the SVD‐KSES, and results demonstrate the proposed approach can detect the incipient faults from vibration signal in the natural degradation process.

The extraction of impulsive signatures from a vibration signal is vital for fault diagnosis of rolling element bearings, which are always whelmed by noise, especially in the early stage of defect development. Aiming at the weak defect diagnosis, kurtosis of Teager energy operator (KTEO) spectrum is employed to indicate the fault information capacity of a spectrum, and considering the accumulative effect of a singular component, accumulative kurtosis of TEO (AKTEO) is firstly proposed to determine the proper signal reconstructed order during vibration signal processing using singular value decomposition (SVD). Then, a vibration processing scheme named SVD‐AKTEO is designed where an iteration is employed to reflect an accumulative singular effect by kurtosis of TEO spectrum. Finally, the fault diagnosis results can be extracted from the TEO spectrum output by SVD‐AKTEO. Simulation data and real data from a run‐to‐failure experiment of a rolling bearing are adopted to validate the efficiency, and comparative analysis demonstrates the feasibility to detect the early defect of the rolling bearing.

Purpose: To meet the high stiffness requirement of bearings used in high-precision spindles, this paper aims to propose a novel kind of bearing composited by hydrostatic cavities and tilting pads with preload. Design/methodology/approach: Cavities are cut on the oil seal surface of a hybrid bearing, in which the tilting pads are set up. The load of the bearing is carried by the hydrostatic cavities and tilting pads. The structural features of this compound bearing and the controlling variables of the main stiffness coefficient are presented. Two basic design principles are proposed on the basis of equal machining clearance (EMC) and equal installation clearance (EIC). Findings: The theoretical analysis indicates that the stiffness of compound bearings under the EMC condition increases to infinity monotonously when the preload coefficient of the tilting pad tends to 1, while the stiffness under the EIC condition has a peak value. Therefore, a synthetic design principle is proposed by synthetically using the above-mentioned two principles. The applicable range of the three principles is discussed through an example. Originality/value: The study about technological combination of hydrostatic cavity and tilting pad in this paper can provide suggestions for the design of a high-stiffness bearing in a precision spindle.
