To reduce the temperature of asphalt pavement and improve the antirutting performance of asphalt mixture, a thermal‐resistant asphalt mixture (TRAM) was produced, in which a certain proportion of mineral aggregate was replaced by ceramic (CE) or floating beads (FB) featuring low thermal conductivity. Firstly, a parallel plate test was developed to test the thermal conductivity of asphalt mixture added with different thermal‐resistant materials. Secondly, the illumination test system was designed to study the visual cooling effect of different TRAM by imitating the natural environment. Finally, the effect of different thermal‐resistant materials on asphalt pavement performance was evaluated. The results show that the addition of thermal‐resistant materials can reduce the thermal conductivity and the temperature of asphalt mixture. The cooling effect of CE75 and CE100 (coarse aggregate substituted by 75% and 100% CE, respectively) is superior to other aggregates. The temperature reduction rates of CE75 and CE100 reache 6.6°C and 6.8°C, respectively. For FB50 and FB75 (fine aggregate substituted with 50 and 75% FB, respectively), the cooling effect of them reaches 3.9°C and 4.5°C, respectively. In addition, the CE and FB can improve the antirutting performance of asphalt mixture by reducing the temperature inside the pavement. The high‐temperature performance of CE75 and FB75 is the best. With the increase of thermal resistance materials, the low‐temperature cracking resistance of asphalt mixture decreases gradually. The failure strain of mixture added with 100% thermal resistance materials is close to the lower limit of Chinese specification. The water stability of different TRAM changes with various test methods. Taking into account the results of pavement performance and the cooling effect, the substitution proportion of CE and FB for TRAM is proposed as 50%∼75%, respectively.

To make full use of the regenerative value of waste cooking oil, and to solve the environmental pollution and food security issues caused by waste cooking oil, waste cooking oil was suggested for use in asphalt. Waste cooking oil was used to adjust the performance of virgin and aged asphalt. This review article summarizes research progress on the performance of asphalt and asphalt mixture with waste cooking oil. The results showed that a moderate dosage of waste cooking oil will improved the low-temperature performance and construction workability of petroleum asphalt and aged asphalt. The mixing and compaction temperature of asphalt mixture with waste cooking oil are reduced by up to 15 °C. The rutting resistance and fatigue resistance of modified asphalt and modified asphalt mixture with waste cooking oil are damaged. After the addition of waste cooking oil in aged asphalt, the high-temperature performance and shear rheologic property of aged asphalt will be recovered. The regeneration effect of waste cooking oil on aged asphalt and aged asphalt mixture is close to that of a traditional regeneration agent, and the partial performance of asphalt or asphalt mixture with waste cooking oil is better. There is no chemical reaction between waste cooking oil and asphalt, but the asphalt component and absorption peak intensity of partial functional groups are changed. The light components content of asphalt binder is usually increased. Further research regarding the engineering application of asphalt mixture with waste cooking oil should be conducted. The method for improving the performance of asphalt and asphalt mixture with waste cooking oil will be mainly researched.

To simulate the influence of the corrosion environment caused by snow-melting agent on pavement, an asphalt mixture was treated by dry-wet cycle in a NaCl solution with various concentrations. The rutting test, bending test, freeze-thaw splitting test, immersion Hamburg wheel-track test, industrial computed tomography (ICT) test, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) test were conducted to evaluate the adverse effect of snow-melting agent on road performance, durability, and the microstructural characteristics of SMA13, AC13, and SUP13 asphalt mixtures. The damage mechanism of performance for asphalt mixtures in a corrosion environment was also discussed. The results show that the road performance and durability of SMA13, SUP13, and AC13 asphalt mixtures decrease by various extents after being treated by the method of dry-wet cycle in chloride salt solution. Among the three kinds of asphalt mixture, SMA13 shows the best resistance to the corrosion of NaCl solution, followed by SUP13 and AC13. After being treated in salt solution, the void parameters such as total void volume, average void volume, equivalent void diameter, and air void of a Marshall specimen grow fast first and then tend to stabilize. The crystallization expansion of NaCl crystals results in structural damage inside the mixture, and then the strength of the asphalt mixture greatly declines, leading to the deterioration of road performance and durability in a salt corrosion environment. SMA13 asphalt mixture is recommended for pavement surface layers where the snow-melting agent is often used.
