Aim There is a lack of an overview of the factors associated with postacute COVID-19 musculoskeletal symptoms. The aims of this study were as follows: 1- to evaluate the most frequent admission symptoms and the frequency of musculoskeletal symptoms in postacute COVID-19 patients; and 2- to determine the related factors with the postacute COVID-19 musculoskeletal symptoms. Methods A total of 280 postacute COVID-19 patients (183 females, 97 males) were enrolled and divided into two groups: 1- patients whose musculoskeletal symptoms initiated with or were aggravated by COVID-19 (n = 240); and 2- patients whose musculoskeletal symptoms did not change with COVID-19 (n = 40). The variables were demographic and treatment data, symptoms on admission, postacute COVID-19 symptoms, laboratory results (complete blood count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, ferritin and d-dimer), chest computed tomography findings and symptoms during acute COVID-19. Results Most of the patients have fatigue (71.8%), spine pain (70.7%) and myalgia (60.7%). The most common pain region was the back (30.4%). The frequency of dyspnoea was 30%, cough 18.5% and chest pain 10.7%. Having any chronic disease (P = .031), the duration of hospital stay (P = .016), frequency of back pain during acute COVID-19 (P = .018), tomography findings and d-dimer (P = .035) levels were significantly higher, and lymphocyte (P = .024) levels were significantly lower in the patients whose symptoms began with or were aggravated by COVID-19. Conclusion Back pain was the most frequent symptom on admission. The most common postacute COVID-19 musculoskeletal symptoms were fatigue, spine pain and myalgia. Lower lymphocyte and higher d-dimer levels, the presence of COVID-19 findings in tomography and back pain during acute COVID-19 infection, higher duration of hospital stay and having chronic diseases were related to post-COVID-19 musculoskeletal symptoms.

Background and Objectives: The aim was to evaluate nerve healing using immunohistochemical, histological, and functional techniques and to compare the effects of two different therapeutic ozone application methods by perineural and intraperitoneal ozone treatment in rats with a crush injury model of sciatic nerve. Materials and Methods: Forty male Sprague Dawley rats were divided into four subgroups of ten rats each: (1) Control group: The left sciatic nerve incised and closed without crush injury, no treatment; (2) Paralyzed group: Crush injury to the left sciatic nerve, no treatment; (3) Perineural ozone group: Crush injury to the left sciatic nerve, treated with perineural ozone therapy; (4) Intraperitoneal ozone group: Crush injury to the left sciatic nerve, treated with intraperitoneal ozone therapy. The treatments were administered for a 14-day period. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and toluidine blue staining were used for histological examination; TUNEL staining was used for immunohistochemical examination. Pinch test and rotarod performance assessment were utilized for functional evaluation. Results: The pinch test scores showed significant improvement in perineural and intraperitoneal ozone treatment groups after treatment (p < 0.001 and p = 0.003, respectively). The scores of myelin degeneration, vascular congestion, vascular wall thickness, inflammation, and toluidine blue and TUNEL staining were significantly lower in both ozone treatment groups compared to the paralyzed group (p < 0.001). Vascular wall thickness scores were significantly higher in the perineural ozone group compared to the control and intraperitoneal ozone groups (p = 0.004 and p = 0.013, respectively). The Schwann cell proliferation scores were significantly higher in the perineural ozone group compared to the control group and intraperitoneal ozone groups (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Both applications of ozone therapy accelerated the healing of nerve regeneration, reduced inflammation and apoptosis based on histopathological results, and enhanced nerve function in rats with sciatic nerve injury. Perineural ozone therapy has been demonstrated to be an efficacious alternative to systemic ozone treatments in the management of sciatic nerve injury. Further studies are needed to determine optimal ozone dosage and administration protocols for the treatment of nerve injury.

Background/Aim: Considering the effects of inflammation on fibromyalgia and the small intestine, we hypothesize that vitamin D deficiency may contribute to inflammation and affect vitamin B12 and ferritin levels in patients with fibromyalgia. The objectives were: 1) to compare the levels of vitamin D, vitamin B12, and ferritin in patients with fibromyalgia and patients who have local painful conditions, and 2) to evaluate the correlation of vitamin D levels with vitamin B12 and ferritin levels. Methods: The records of 299 patients with fibromyalgia (274 female, 25 male) and 128 patients with local painful conditions (114 female, 14 male) between April 2019 and 2020 were examined, including measurements of 25-hydroxy vitamin D, vitamin B12, ferritin, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and C-reactive protein. Results: The levels of 25-hydroxy vitamin D were low in both groups, with levels below 30 ng/ml in 90.3% of all patients. However, there was no significant difference in vitamin B12 and ferritin levels between the two groups, and the levels of these markers were within normal limits in both groups. Correlation analysis showed that vitamin D levels were significantly correlated with vitamin B12 (P<0.001, r=0.211) and ferritin (P=0.005, r=0.337) levels in patients with fibromyalgia but not in the other group. Conclusion: Consistent with our hypothesis, an association was found between vitamin D levels and vitamin B12 and ferritin levels in fibromyalgia. However, this correlation was not found in patients with local painful conditions. '+st+' Wolfe F, Smythe HA, Yunus MB, Bennett RM, Bombardier C, Goldenberg DL, et al.
