Prof. Yun Lai received a PhD in Physics from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Hong Kong, in 2005. He worked as a Research Associate in the Department of Physics at HKUST until 2011, then enrolled in the Thousand Youth Talents Program and became a Professor at Soochow University. In 2018, he joined the School of Physics in Nanjing University as a Professor.
Prof. Lai's research interests include metamaterials/metasurfaces, nanophotonics and plasmonics, and photonic and phononic crystals. He has published 114 SCI papers, including 2 Nature Materials, 3 Nature Communications, 1 Science Advances, 9 Physical Review Letters, 2 Physical Review X, and 2 Light Science & Applications. He has pioneered many concepts and applications, such as cloaking at a distance, illusion optics, double-zero media with ε=μ=0 and their physical applications, hybrid elastic solids that only allow transverse/longitudinal waves, perfectly transparent materials with diffuse reflection, omnidirectional Brewster effect beyond the Brewster's angle, anomalous Brewster effect that allows ultra-broadband perfect absorption and variation in the angle of refraction, cladding-free ultra-compact waveguide arrays and photonic circuits, metasurface that merges the functions of anti-reflection and wavefront control, ultra-thin metaurface cloaking device, and sound-proof acoustic meta-cage. He has 16 granted patents in China and 2 granted patents in the United States.
