Professor Thompson's interests are in soil microbiology applied to grain production systems. He is particularly interested in integrated management of root-lesion nematodes and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in grain production systems of the subtropical grain region of eastern Australia. Research into ways to manage root-lesion nematodes has led him into pre-breeding for nematode tolerance and resistance in wheat and chickpea. Earlier research concerned nitrogen-fixing bacteria of the Azotobacteraceae and carbon and nitrogen transformations in soil with different tillage and stubble management systems.
