This paper proposes an implementation of distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) for the three-phase distribution system. The functions of DSTATCOM are harmonics elimination, compensation of reactive power, and load balancing in power factor correction and voltage regulation modes. A variable forgetting factor recursive least square (VFFRLS)-based control algorithm is proposed for effective operation of DSTATCOM to estimate weighted values of active and reactive power components of load current. The proposed control algorithm is fast in convergence and has quick response. A prototype of DSTATCOM is developed in the laboratory using a digital signal processor (dSPACE 1104) and voltage-source converter and tested for various operating conditions under nonlinear load. The performance of DSTATCOM is found satisfactory in mitigating various power-quality problems with the VFFRLS-based control algorithm.

In this article, we deal with the development of a fractional-order notch filter (FONF) for a grid-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) system. The developed FONF control approach is used to estimate fundamental active constituents from the distorted load currents, and hence, gating pulses for operating voltage source converter (VSC) are used in the PV system. This control approach for the grid-connected solar PV system is designed to achieve several purposes, such as feeding active power demand of the load/grid and countercurrent-related power quality issues at the common connecting point. The power quality issues taken into consideration are harmonics distortion, reactive power burden on the system, and unbalancing of connected loads. The FONF-based control proposes a modified structure of an integer-order notch filter. The integer-order filters have a limitation due to the fixed integrator and differentiator terms. In FONF, the power of integrator used in a notch filter can be modified according to the application required for obtaining the accurate response of the system. A prototype of the grid-connected solar PV system is developed in the laboratory using IGBTs based VSC and dSPACE MicroLabBox (DS-1202) to demonstrate the behavior of the FONF-based control. Simulation and experimental results are obtained for steady-state and unbalanced loads with variation in the solar irradiance. The harmonic distortions in the system are observed as per the IEEE-519 standard.

This paper proposes a new control algorithm for mitigation of power quality problems at the distribution level. The control algorithm is designed on the basis of echo-state network, which is a type of recurrent neural network. This technique is used to extract fundamental weight components from nonsinusoidal load currents. These weight components are used to evaluate reference grid currents and consequently generate switching logic for the voltage source converter used in the active filter. The shunt-connected active filter with the proposed control algorithm is used to overcome several current-related power quality problems and provides the load compensation. Problems such as the presence of lower order harmonics, insufficient reactive power, and load unbalancing are corrected using a shunt filter in both the power factor correction and voltage regulation modes. The proposed control algorithm is validated on a real time system which is a prototype of a shunt filter. The algorithm is tested in MATLAB using Sim Power Systems and SIMULINK and implemented on a digital signal processor.
In this research work, a multipurpose power electronic interface (PEI) competent of utilising dual sources during charging process has been proposed for plug‐in electric vehicles. Based on the requirement, the battery can either be charged from solar photovoltaic (SPV) or from the grid. Moreover, when charged from an SPV source, converter can extract highest available power with maximum power point tracking (MPPT). The intrinsic novelty of the proposed PEI is that no additional components/switches are employed to achieve dual sources in charging or for MPPT. The proposed PEI consists of a converter derived from a conventional isolated secondary ended primary inductance converter (SEPIC). It is designed to operate effectively in all vehicular modes (charging, propulsion (PP) and regenerative braking (RB)). During battery charging from the grid and SPV, it operates as isolated SEPIC. While, in PP and RB, it operates as a flyback converter. Therefore, the proposed converter keeps isolation in each mode, which results in better safety for battery as well as vehicle users. Further, all vehicular modes are achieved through a single converter. As a result, compactness of the charger increases and making it best solution for on‐board battery charging application.
A new adaptive control technique is proposed for a three‐phase shunt active power filter (SAPF) in this study. The proposed control algorithm is based on recursive inverse theory which is used here to extract weighted values corresponding to fundamental active and reactive power components of load currents. This adaptive control algorithm possesses advantages over other control algorithms in terms of its reduced computational complexity, fast weight convergence and robust performance in distorted environment. The SAPF is used to mitigate current related power quality problems such as harmonics, reactive power and load unbalancing in both modes of power factor correction and voltage regulation. The performance of proposed control algorithm of SAPF is demonstrated through simulation results in Matlab/Simulink environment, which are validated with test results obtained on the developed experimental prototype of SAPF in the laboratory.

This paper proposes the design and control of a three-phase four-wire distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) for elimination of several power quality (PQ) issues, namely harmonics, reactive power, load unbalancing, and neutral current. A three-phase voltage source converter (VSC) and a zigzag transformer based configuration are utilized as a DSTATCOM. The zigzag transformer is operated to provide a suitable path for load neutral current and other PQ problems are mitigated by designing a suitable control for VSC. The control of VSC is developed using Euclidean direction search (EDS) technique based adaptive control theory. This control algorithm is designed to extricate fundamental constituents from the load current and used to generate switching pulses for VSC. The improved behavior of the proposed EDS-based control is observed by comparing it with other existing controllers. Real-time performance of the EDS control is verified on a developed prototype in the laboratory using VSC and DSP (dSPACE1104 R&D controller).
