Michael Abramson is the Principal Investigator for the Hazelwood Health Study, a 10-year study of the long-term health effects of the Hazelwood mine fire event in 2014. He previously held the appointment of Deputy Head of School, School of Public Health & Preventive Medicine, Monash University (formerly Department of Epidemiology & Preventive Medicine) from 1993 until 2019. Michael was a Visiting Medical Officer in Allergy, Immunology, and Respiratory Medicine at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne (1995-2015) and was appointed Honorary Medical Officer in Allergy, Immunology, and Respiratory Medicine at the Alfred Hospital upon his retirement from clinical practice.
Abramson graduated in Medicine from Monash University in 1979 and received his PhD from the University of Newcastle in 1990 for research into occupational asthma. His current research program covers the epidemiology of asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, including genetic and environmental risk factors such as air pollution and occupation, and the role of spirometry in managing these conditions. This work has been supported by the National Health and Medical Research Council, Department of Health and Human Services, Victorian Health Promotion Foundation, Lung Foundation Australia, and Asthma Victoria. He led the NHMRC Centre for Research Excellence for Population Health Research on Electromagnetic Energy (PRESEE) (2013-2019).
