Rhubarb is one of the most ancient, commonly used and important herbs in Chinese medicine. The modern researches of rhubarb clarified the efficacies, ingredients and mechanisms in a more scientific and rigorous way. The main chemical compositions of rhubarb include anthraquinones, anthrones, stilbenes, tannins, polysaccharides etc. These compositions show extensive pharmacological activities including regulating gastrointestinal, anticancer, antimicrobial, hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, protecting cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and so on. This paper reviews the recent studies on the active ingredients, pharmacological effects, clinical application and functional mechanism.

Radix Salviae miltiorrhizae et Rhizoma, known as Danshen in China, is one of the most popular traditional Chinese medicines. Recently, there has been increasing scientific attention on Danshen for its remarkable bioactivities, such as promoting blood circulation, removing blood stasis, and clearing away heat. This review summarized the advances in chemical analysis of Danshen and its preparations since 2009. Representative established methods were reviewed, including spectroscopy, thin layer chromatography, gas chromatography, liquid chromatography (LC), liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), capillary electrophoresis, electrochemistry, and bioanalysis. Especially the analysis of polysaccharides in Danshen was discussed for the first time. Some proposals were also put forward to benefit quality control of Danshen.

The extract from Ginkgo biloba leaves has become a very popular plant medicine and herbal supplement for its potential benefit in alleviating symptoms associated with peripheral vascular disease, dementia, asthma and tinnitus. Most research on G. biloba leaves focus on the leaves collected in July and August from four to seven year-old trees, however a large number of leaves from fruit cultivars (trees older than 10 years) are ignored and become obsolete after fruit harvest season (November). In this paper, we expand the tree age range (from one to 300 years) and first comparatively analyze the total flavonol glycosides and terpene lactones at different ages, from different cultivation sources and genders of G. biloba leaves collected in November by using the validated HPLC-ELSD and HPLC-PDA methods. The results show that the contents of total terpene lactones and flavonol glycosides in the leaves of young ginkgo trees are higher than those in old trees, and they are higher in male trees than in female trees. Geographical factors appear to have a significant influence on the contents as well. These results will provide a good basis for the comprehensive utilization of G. biloba leaves, especially the leaves from fruit cultivars.

Ginkgo ketoester tablets (GT) and donepezil were a clinically used combination for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The aim of the study was undertaken to investigate the antiamnesic effects of the two drugs alone and in combination through in vivo models of the Morris water maze along with in vitro antioxidants, acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE). The potential mechanisms were speculated by the activities of acetylcholine (ACh), AChE, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and malondialdehyde (MDA) and the protein expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and tyrosine protein kinase B (TrkB). The combination group showed a concentration-dependent inhibition of cholinesterase and antioxidation. As far as its mechanism was concerned, the combination of two drugs exerted excellent effects on oxidative stress, cholinergic pathway damage, and inactivation of the BDNF-TrkB signaling pathway. Additionally, to elucidate the binding mechanism of GT active ingredients into the structure of AChE, the results of molecular docking studies indicated that hydrogen and/or hydrophobic bonds might play an important role in their binding process. Thus, the combination of drugs could treat AD perfectly and further verify the scientific rationality of clinical medication.

Diarrhea remains a significant health threat to children under five years of age. The study aims to systematically elucidate the global burden of diarrhea in children, providing scientific insights for effective prevention and control strategies. The data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 study was analyzed to assess the trends in incidence, prevalence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of diarrhea in children under five years across the globe, 21 geographical region, and 204 countries and territories, stratified by age group, sex, and socio-demographic index (SDI) levels. The trend of the disease burden for childhood diarrhea from 1990 to 2021 was described and estimated using the average annual percent change (AAPC), and a Bayesian age-period-cohort (BAPC) model was employed to predict the future burden of diarrhea in children. From 1990 to 2021, there was a significant decline in the global burden of diarrhea among children under five years of age. The AAPC for incidence (-4092.18, 95% confidence interval [CI]: -4224.60 to -3959.76), prevalence (-70.98, 95% CI: -72.67 to -69.28), mortality (-6.89, 95% CI: -6.95 to -6.83), and DALYs rate (-621.79, 95% CI: -627.20 to -616.38) of diarrhea in children all showed a marked downward trend. Diarrheal incidence (r = -0.782, P < 0.001), prevalence (r = -0.777, P < 0.001), mortality (r = -0.908, P < 0.001), and DALYs rate (r = -0.904, P < 0.001) were negatively correlated with the SDI. Between 2022 and 2035, the global incidence, prevalence, and mortality rates of diarrhea in children under five years are projected to continue declining. The leading causes of diarrheal mortality in children include wasting, underweight, and non-exclusive breastfeeding. Rotavirus remains the predominant pathogen associated with diarrhea-related mortality rate and DALY rate. Although the global burden of diarrhea in children under five has steadily declined, it remains a significant health threat. Rotavirus is the leading pathogen, highlighting the importance of expanding rotavirus vaccination. Additionally, improving nutritional status, increasing exclusive breastfeeding rates, and enhancing access to sanitation and clean drinking water are crucial measures that, when widely implemented, can effectively reduce the health risks posed by diarrhea in children.
