In this study, the temperature and relative humidity profiles retrieved from five ground-based microwave radiometers in Beijing were assimilated into the rapid-refresh multi-scale analysis and prediction system-short term (RMAPS-ST). The precipitation bifurcation prediction that occurred in Beijing on 4 May 2019 was selected as a case to evaluate the impact of their assimilation. For this purpose, two experiments were set. The Control experiment only assimilated conventional observations and radar data, while the microwave radiometers profilers (MWRPS) experiment assimilated conventional observations, the ground-based microwave radiometer profiles and radar data into the RMAPS-ST model. The results show that in comparison with the Control test, the MWRPS test made reasonable adjustments for the thermal conditions in time, better reproducing the weak heat island phenomenon in the observation prior to the rainfall. Thus, assimilating MWRPS improved the skills of the precipitation forecast in both the distribution and the intensity of rainfall precipitation, capable of predicting the process of belt-shaped radar echo splitting and the precipitation bifurcation in the urban area of Beijing. The assimilation of the ground-based microwave radiometer profiles improved the skills of the quantitative precipitation forecast to a certain extent. Among multiple cycle experiments, the onset of 0600 UTC cycle closest to the beginning of rainfall performed best by assimilating the ground-based microwave radiometer profiles.
A heavy rainstorm occurred in Beijing on 19–20 July 2016. The Weather Research and Forecasting Model coupled with Chemistry (WRF-Chem) was used to investigate the effects of anthropogenic aerosols on precipitation and microphysical processes. Three conditions were simulated by altering the anthropogenic emissions. When the anthropogenic emissions were increased by 10 times, the area-average accumulated rainfall amount and maximum accumulated rainfall amount both decreased. The cloud water mixing ratio increased and the rain mixing ratio decreased. The radii of cloud droplets decreased, and the collision efficiency of cloud water by rain and the autoconversion rate of cloud water into rain were both low. When the anthropogenic emission was 10% of the original emission, the area of accumulated rainfall amounts greater than 25 mm in the Beijing area was 10% larger than those of the other two tests. The collision efficiency and autoconversion rate of cloud water into rain were high for large contact areas and large cloud droplets. The graupel mixing ratio was the largest. Thus, the process of melting of graupel into rain was the largest. In the WRF-Chem model, the aerosols did not participate as ice nuclei (IN) in the ice-phase microphysical processes, and therefore the aerosols could influence only the warm rain processes and mix-phased processes near the freezing level line. For no influence on ice-phase microphysical processes, the snow and ice mixing ratios did not show many differences among the different tests.
The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region experienced heavy air pollution in December 2015, which provided a good opportunity to explore the aerosol-radiation interaction (ARI) effects of different particulate matter (PM) components (sulfate, nitrate, and black carbon (BC)). In this study, five tests were conducted by the Weather Research and Forecasting—Chemistry (WRF-Chem) model. The tests included scenario 1 simulation with ARI turned on, scenario 2 simulation with ARI turned off, scenario3 simulation without NOx/NO3− emissions and with ARI turned on, scenario 4 simulation without SO2/SO42− emissions and with ARI turned on, and scenario 5 simulation without BC emissions and with ARI turned on. The ARI decreased the downward shortwave radiation (SWDOWN) and the temperature at 2 m (T2), reduced the planetary boundary layer (PBL) height (PBLH), and increased the relative humidity (RH) at 2 m in the region. These factors also contribute to pollution accumulation. The results revealed that BC aerosols have a stronger effect on the reduction in SWDOWN than sulfate (SO42−) and nitrate (NO3−). BC aerosols produce both cooling and heating effects, while SO42− aerosols produce only cooling effects. The PBL decreased and RH2 increased due to the aerosol feedback effect of sulfate, nitrate, and BC. The ARI effect on meteorological factors during the nonheavy pollution period was much smaller than that during the pollution period.
The Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS) is used to investigate the effect of aerosols acting as ice nuclei (IN) on the formation and growth of hydrometeor particles as well as on the dynamics and precipitation of a severe storm in Northern China. The focus of this study is to determine how the overall dynamics and microphysical structure of deep convective clouds are influenced if IN concentrations are somehow altered in a storm environment that is otherwise unchanged. Ice mixing ratios tend to increase and liquid mixing ratios tend to decrease with increasing IN concentrations. High concentrations of IN reduce the mean hail diameter and hail particles with smaller diameters melt more easily, which leads to a decrease in ground hailfall and an increase in surface rainfall. Liquid water plays a more important role in the process of hail formation, while the role of ice particles in the process of hail formation decreases with higher IN concentrations. The role of small cloud droplets in the formation of raindrops is increased and the role of hail melting in the process of raindrops formation is weakened with enhanced IN concentrations. Both latent heat release and absorption significantly increase with increasing IN concentrations. Increasing the concentration of IN by an appropriate amount is beneficial for increasing the total water content and strengthening the updraft, leading to enhancement of a storm, but excessive IN concentrations will inhibit the development of a storm.
