The eastern region of Santa Catarina State (Brazil) has an important history of natural disasters due to extreme rainfall events. Floods and landslides are enhancedby local features such as orography and urbanization: the replacement of natural surface coverage causing more surface runoff and, hence, flooding. Thus, studies of this type of events – which directly influence life in the towns – take on increasing importance. This work makes a quantitative analysis of occurrences of extreme rainfall events in the eastern and northern regions of Santa Catarina State in the last 60 years, through individual analysis, considering the history of floods ineach selected town, as well as an estimate through to the end of century following regional climate modeling. A positive linear trend, in most of the towns studied, was observed in the results, indicating greater frequency of these events in recent decades, and the HadRM3P climate model shows a heterogeneous increase of events for all towns in the period from 2071 to 2100.Keywords: floods, climate modeling, linear trend.

A B S T R A C T: The study of climate change and extreme events is important due to the impacts related to them. Analyzing the daily precipitation series (1982 to 2015) of Pelotas/RS/Brazil, this work aims to: (i) detect possible trends in precipitation; (ii) relate the precipitation’s extreme events to meteorological systems that caused them; and (iii) analyze the influence of Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) on interannual precipitation variability. For trend analysis, the linear and Mann-Kendall regression tests were applied to the total annual and quarterly precipitation series. For the analysis of extreme events, it was selected the events with highest precipitation rate, relating them to associated meteorological systems by analyzing the mean sea level pressure fields obtained from reanalysis dataset. The relationship between the annual PDO values and the total annual precipitation was analyzed using Pearson’s coefficient. Results showed that the total annual precipitation do not have a significant trend, but when the tests were carried out by quarter, only the precipitations of the third quarter presented a non-significant trend. From the 18 selected extreme events occurred during the analyzed period, 12 presented a well defined pattern of continental low pressure center ending as extratropical cyclone on the coast of RS, and 9 occurred in years of influence of El Niño. In addition, the results obtained indicated a significant relationship between the PDO index and the rainfall variability in the Pelotas. Keywords: heavy rainfall, El Niño Southern Oscillation, climate change, sea surface temperature, precipitation variability.

This work aimed to analyze the average temperature and rainfall in the Southern and Steppe regions of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, obtained by three global climate models regionalized by the Eta model (CANESM2, HADGEM2-ES and MIROC5) for the historical period, and two future climate scenarios (RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5), subdivided into three periods: F1 (2006-2040), F2 (2041-2070), and F3 (2071-2099). The analysis was conducted by applying the trend tests Mann Kendall’s, Sen’s Slope and Pettitt’s to the dataset. The study noted an increase in temperature, and that the highest temperatures will occur at the end of the century. For the three climate models, temperatures will be milder in the RCP 4.5 scenario, mostly, when compared to the RCP 8.5. For those scenarios, a significant increase up to 0.95 C/year was observed in the temperature of all series, with the years of change in the mean values occurring between 2048 and 2060. The projections also suggest that there may be an increase in the average accumulated rainfall in the future periods analyzed, with exception of the result found with CANESM2 model at the RCP 8.5 scenario, which showed a significant decrease of annual rainfall in all series, ranging approximately from -3,1 to -6,6 mm/year. Those significant changes in mean of the rainfall series are expected for the late 2070’s. With exception of this result, most cities and models indicate an increase in rainfall regimes, with clear variations between models and scenarios.

Although several studies have evaluated the intensity-duration-frequency relationships of extreme rainfall events, these relationships under different seasonal conditions remain relatively unknown. Thus, this study aimed to determine whether the intensity-duration-frequency relationships obtained seasonally from the rainfall records in the winter and summer represent the maximum rainfall events for the city of Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. Pluviographic data from 1982 to 2015 were used to create two seasonal series: one for the summer from December 21 to March 20 and the other for the winter from June 21 to September 22. These seasonal relationships were compared with the annual pluviographic data. The intensity, duration, and frequency relationships obtained from the summer rain data adequately represented the maximum rainfall in Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. The maximum intensity values of rainfall obtained from the relationship of intensity, duration, and frequency for the winter did not adequately encapsulate the occurrence of rain with greater intensities.

The transboundary Mirim-São Gonçalo watershed (MSGW) is of a paramount importance for the development of its region, mainly for the agricultural sector. Obtaining climate data is fundamental in the management of water resources, as it allows estimating missing data, making long-term forecasts and checking possible trends. The European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) produces numerical weather forecasts, being the fifth generation of reanalysis (ERA5) the most recent. This work aimed to evaluate the efficiency of ERA5 in representing precipitation for the Brazilian side of MSGW, comparing its grid points data with the observed ones from rain gauges. For this purpose, the ERA5 and observed monthly climatological 1981-2020 rain data of the MSGW was calculated. The stationarity of the data was evaluated by applying the Mann-Kendall’s (MK) and Sen’s Slope (SS) tests, while the data homogeneity was verified with the Pettitt (Pt) test. For data validation, the Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) and Pearson's correlation coefficient (rpearson) were calculated. MK and SS tests verified that there is no significant trend in the majority of the precipitation series, while the Pt test pointed out that there is no significant changing point (5% of significance level). The error measures (MAPE and RMSE) were low while the rpearson presented high correlation values (strong and positive), indicating the good performance and the potential of the ERA5 model in representing the precipitation data in the MSGW.
