Gabriela Santos-Gomes is Assistant Professor of Protozoology in the Unit of Research and Teaching of Parasitology at the Institute de Higiene e Medicina Tropical (IHMT), Universidade Nova de Lisboa (UNL, Lisbon, Portugal), since 1998. Was an Invited Professor at Lurio University (Unilurio, Nampula, Moçambique) and is a Researcher of the Vector-Born Diseases Group from the Global Health and Tropical Medicine Research Center (GHTM, IHMT). Gabriela has a degree in biological sciences from the Faculty of Sciences, Universidade de Lisboa (ULisbon, Lisbon, Portugal), a Ph.D. in Microbiology by ULisbon, and has the academic title of Agregação (title obtained in a public examination required to further apply for a position of full professor) in Biomedical Sciences by UNL. Her main areas of research are the parasite–host interaction, mainly the immune response developed by the infected host, using Leishmania spp. as the principal model of parasitic disease, and the development of control strategies, including the development of vaccines and anti-parasitic new drugs. Has coordinated several research projects, collaborates with researchers from national and international institutions, is a reviewer of several publications and European and non-European funding agencies, and acts as a consultant for the Instituto Portugês do Sangue e da Transplantação (Lisbon, Portugal).
