Understanding energy transfer via near‐field thermal radiation is critical for the future advances of nanotechnology. Evanescent waves and photon tunneling are responsible for the near‐field energy transfer being several orders of magnitude greater than that between two blackbodies. The enhanced energy transfer may be used for improving the performance of energy conversion devices, developing novel nanofabrication techniques, and imaging nanostructures with higher spatial resolution. Near‐field heat transfer can be analyzed using fluctuational electrodynamics. This article reviews the fundamentals of near‐field radiation and outlines the recent advances in this field. Important results are presented for near‐field energy transfer between parallel plates and between multilayered structures. Application of near‐field thermal radiation in near‐field thermophotovoltaic devices is also discussed. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The present paper theoretically demonstrates coherent thermal emission in the infrared region by exciting magnetic polaritons between metallic gratings and an opaque metallic film, separated by a dielectric spacer. The coupling of the metallic strips and the film induces a magnetic response that is characterized by a negative permeability and positive permittivity. On the other hand, the metallic film intrinsically exhibits a negative permittivity and positive permeability in the near infrared. This artificial structure is equivalent to a pair of single-negative materials. By exciting surface magnetic polaritons, large emissivity peaks can be achieved at the resonance frequencies and are almost independent of the emission angle. The resonance frequency of the magnetic response can be predicted by an analogy to an inductor and capacitor circuit. The proposed structure can be easily constructed using micro/nanofabrication.

The optical constants of tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) are determined in a broad spectral region from the visible to the far infrared. Ta2O5 films of various thicknesses from approximately 170 to 1600 nm are deposited using reactive magnetron sputtering on Si substrates. X-ray diffraction shows that the as-deposited films are amorphous, and annealing in air at 800 °C results in the formation of nanocrystalline Ta2O5. Ellipsometry is used to obtain the dispersion in the visible and near-infrared. Two Fourier-transform infrared spectrometers are used to measure the transmittance and reflectance at wavelengths from 1 to 1000 μm. The surface topography and microstructure of the samples are examined using atomic force microscopy, confocal microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Classical Lorentz oscillators are employed to model the absorption bands due to phonons and impurities. A simple model is introduced to account for light scattering in the annealed films, which contain micro-cracks. For the unannealed samples, an effective-medium approximation is used to take into account the adsorbed moisture in the film and a Drude free-electron term is also added to model the broad background absorption.

Any materials at temperatures higher than absolute zero emit electromagnetic waves due to the thermal fluctuations of free charges or ions. When two or more bodies at different temperatures are brought sufficiently close to each other with vacuum gap spacing smaller than the characteristic thermal wavelength, near-field radiative heat flux can exceed the far-field blackbody limit, governed by the well-known Stefan-Boltzmann law, by orders of magnitude. This article reviews the recent progress on both theoretical and experimental studies of near-field thermal radiation with an emphasis on its potential applications. Recent theoretical developments are presented, such as near-field radiation of general anisotropic materials and 2D materials, application condition of effective medium theory, and exact numerical methods for dealing with arbitrary particles or periodic nanostructures. Recent experimental achievements are also discussed, focusing on tip–plane and plane–plane configurations with various materials. The wide applications of near-field radiation are summarized in terms of thermal imaging, energy harvesting, and contactless thermal management such as modulation, rectification, and amplification. An outlook is provided on the promise of near-field thermal radiation in energy harvesting, novel thermal sources, and sensing, as well as the development of related fields such as reducing Casimir stiction, minimizing noise current, and increasing spontaneous emission rate. Challenges are also discussed, such as developing exact and fast computational techniques for complex metamaterials, understanding near-field radiation at extreme gap spacing, overcoming weak mode coupling in thermophotovoltaic (TPV) systems, measuring large-area plane–plane configuration at small gap spacing, and realizing devices based on near-field radiation.
