Dr. Davide Campoccia received a Degree in Biology from the University of Padua (Italy) in 1988 and was awarded a Ph.D. by the University of Liverpool (Liverpool, U.K.) in 1996 for his studies on the biocompatibility of hyaluronic acid derivatives at the Department of Clinical Engineering (Royal Liverpool Hospital). He worked on research and development industrial projects within a pharmaceutical setting and covered the position of Expert in Research Activity and Research and Development Project Leader (Project: “Artificial cartilage”) at Fidia Advanced Biopolymers (FAD) Srl (Abano, Italy). From the year 2000 to the present, he has been a Dirigente Biologo (Senior Research biologist), initially at the former Laboratory of Biocompatibility of Implant Materials and, subsequently, at the Laboratorio di Patologia delle Infezioni Associate all’Impianto (Laboratory on Pathology of Implant Infections), IRCCS Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli (Bologna, Italy). Presently, he is Deputy Head of the Laboratory on Implant Infections. His past research work concerned the in vitro and in vivo biocompatibility of degradable materials and the tissue engineering of human articular cartilage. His current research interests focus on the epidemiology and pathogenesis of bacterial infections associated with the use of biomaterials, on the bacterial biofilm, on the interactions of bacteria with prosthetic surfaces and host cells, and on the design and evaluation of anti-infective materials.
