Sebastian Villasante is a well-known figure in marine and coastal ecosystem studies. His research focuses on transformative changes in marine and coastal ecosystem services; climate change; and social-ecological systems. He combines quantitative and qualitative methods to understand linkages between the natural and social components of marine systems at multiple scales. He has written more than 100 publications on marine fisheries and the Ocean Health Index.
