Printable electronics is emerging as one of the fast-growing engineering fields with a higher degree of customization and reliability. Ironically, sustainable printing technology is essential because of the minimal waste to the environment. To move forward, we need to harness the fabrication technology with the potential to support traditional process. In this review, we have systematically discussed in detail the various manufacturing materials and processing technologies. The selection criteria for the assessment are conducted systematically on the manuscript published in the last 10 years (2012–2022) in peer-reviewed journals. We have discussed the various kinds of printable ink which are used for fabrication based on nanoparticles, nanosheets, nanowires, molecular formulation, and resin. The printing methods and technologies used for printing for each technology are also reviewed in detail. Despite the major development in printing technology some critical challenges needed to be addressed and critically assessed. One such challenge is the coffee ring effect, the possible methods to reduce the effect on modulating the ink environmental condition are also indicated. Finally, a summary of printable electronics for various applications across the diverse industrial manufacturing sector is presented.

The most common method to fabricate both simple and complex structures in the additive manufacturing process is fused deposition modeling (FDM). Many researchers have studied the strengthening of FDM components by adding short carbon fibers (CF) or by reinforcing solid carbon fiber rods. In the current research, we sought to enhance the mechanical properties of FDM components by adding bioinspired solid CF rods during the fabrication process. An effective bonding interface of bioinspired CF rods and polylactic acid (PLA) was achieved by triangular interlocking sutures and by employing synthetic glue as the binding agent. In particular, the tensile strength of solid CF rod reinforced PLA samples was studied. Critical parameters such as layer thickness, extruder temperature, extruder speed, and shell thickness were considered for optimization. Significant process parameters were identified through leverage plots using the response surface methodology (RSM). The optimum parameters were found to be layer thickness of 0.04 mm, extruder temperature of 215 °C, extruder speed of 60 mm/s, and shell thickness of 1.2 mm. The results revealed that the bioinspired solid CF rod reinforced PLA (CFRPLA) composite exhibited a tensile strength of 82.06 MPa, which was approximately three times higher than the pure PLA (28 MPa, 66% lower than CFRPLA), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) (28 MPa, 66% lower than CFRPLA), polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG) (34 MPa, 60% lower than CFRPLA), and nylon (34 MPa, 60% lower than CFRPLA) samples.

Automated fiber placement (AFP) is emerging as one of the advanced methods toward fabrication of polymer matrix based composite structures. This automated technique focuses on polymer composite manufacturing for use in a wide range of automotive and aerospace applications. The AFP process offers an elevated level of customization through the possibility of placing each individual tow at custom-designed trajectories. Additive manufacturing (AM) method, on the other hand, has the potential to fabricate functional end user parts of complex geometries, thus eliminating the need for costly tooling, multi-step processing and fasteners or joints. This paper will highlight the potential of fusing AFP and AM processes to fabricate complex 3D polymer based composite parts. A combination of these two processes suggests a promising option for composite materials development, improving composite structures in terms of complexity and customizability. The paper presents the adopted research methodology, background research, the design, development and set up of an experimental workcell that fuses AM and AFP, and the design methodology which is required to design complex composite parts using the proposed manufacturing process. Main challenges and opportunities are discussed, such as how restrictions of conventional composite production can be eased, and additional freedoms of design can be achieved. GRAPHICAL ABSTRACT
