Objective: To determine whether there was a possible predictive relationship between systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) and recurrence of deep venous thrombosis (DVT). Methods: A total of 231 patients with DVT who met the study criteria and whose data could be accessed were enrolled to this retrospective single-centered cross-sectional study. Of them 26 patients with DVT recurrence consisted of the study group (Group 1) while remaining 205 cases without recurrence were considered as the control population (Group 2). The patients’ basic clinical features and laboratory results from the complete blood count (CBC) test were recorded and compared between groups. Following univariate analyses, a multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the independent predictors of the recurrence of DVT. Additionally, a receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was performed to detect the cut-off values of the predictors with sensitivity and specificity rates. Results: There were no significant differences between the groups for basic clinical features, except for diabetes mellitus, pulmonary embolism, and atrial fibrillation. Although the univariate analysis revealed that the median values of NLR, PLR, and SII were significantly higher in the DVT recurrence group, only SII was determined to be a significant and independent predictor of DVT recurrence in the multivariate logistic regression analysis. According to ROC curve analysis, SII of 1685 × 103/mm3 constituted the cut-off value for predicting DVT recurrence with 61.5% sensitivity and 76.6% specificity (AUC = 0.686, p = .001). Conclusion: The present study demonstrated for the first time in the literature that SII significantly predicted the recurrence of DVT.

Objective: There is no study in the literature evaluating the dynamic thiol/disulfide homeostasis in patients with chronic venous insufficiency. Thus, we designed this study to evaluate the dynamic thiol/disulfide homeostasis as a novel indicator of oxidative stress in patients with chronic venous insufficiency. Methods: This was a prospective case-control study performed at the department of cardiovascular surgery of a tertiary referral hospital in Turkey. A total of 80 (CEAP C3-C6) patients with lower extremity chronic venous insufficiency (as the study group) and 80 healthy subjects (as the control group) were enrolled to the study. The participants' basic demographic and clinical characteristics as well as serum levels of some laboratory parameters including albumin, ferroxidase, myeloperoxidase, native thiol, total thiol, disulphide, native thiol/total thiol, disulphide/native thiol, and disulphide/total thiol were determined, and then compared between the groups. Results: In terms of basic demographic and clinical characteristics, both groups were statistically similar, and there were no significant differences between the groups. When the laboratory parameters were considered, serum ferroxidase and myeloperoxidase levels were detected to be significantly higher, whereas albumin, native thiol, total thiol, and disulphide levels were detected to be significantly lower in the study group than in the control group. Conclusions: Dynamic thiol/disulphide homeostasis could be considered as an indicator reflecting the oxidative stress status in patients with chronic venous insufficiency. Background: This study aimed to investigate the predictive value of systemic inflammation markers for mortality in patients who underwent emergency endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) due to a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (rAAA). Methods: A total of 40 patients who underwent EVAR procedure due to rAAA were included in this retrospective observational cohort study. The patients were divided into 2 groups: group 1 (survivor group, n = 27) and group 2 (mortality group, n = 13). Basic clinical and demographic characteristics, hematological and biochemical parameters, and complications before the procedure were compared between the groups. Results: When the pre-procedural demographic and clinical characteristics of the groups were compared, the mean age in the mortality group and the survivor group was found to be 78.6 Å} 6.2 and 67 Å} 7.3 years, respectively. It was determined that the mean C-reactive protein value and median neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, systemic immune-inflammatory index, inflammatory prognostic index, and multi-inflammatory index (MII) values in the mortality group were significantly higher than those in the survival group, and the mean lymphocyte, eosinophil, hemoglobin, platelet, plateletcrit, and albumin values were significantly lower than those in the survivor group. In the logistic regression analysis, only MII was found to be an independent predictor of mortality. Conclusion: Based on the results of the current study investigating a modest number of patients, high MII levels may be used as a predictor of periprocedural mortality in patients undergoing EVAR procedure due to AAAs. BACKGROUND We aimed to examine whether sex difference affected early postoperative outcomes in elderly patients undergoing off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB) surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 328 elderly patients (≥70 years) undergoing elective isolated OPCAB surgery between January 2013 and December 2020 were included in this retrospective observational cohort study and divided into 2 groups according to sex: women group (n=102) and men group (n=226). The groups were compared in terms of preoperative basic clinical characteristics, intraoperative data, and postoperative outcomes and complications. RESULTS Mean ages were 73.6 and 73.8 years in women and men, respectively. Women were significantly shorter and had a lower smoking rate. There were no significant differences between the groups in terms of other preoperative clinical characteristics and comorbidities. There were no significant differences between the groups in terms of intraoperative data. The comparision of postoperative outcomes and complications showed women had significantly longer durations of intensive care unit (ICU) and hospital stays, and a significantly higher rate of wound infection. There were no significant differences between the groups in terms of other postoperative outcomes, complications, and mortality. CONCLUSIONS Our study demonstrated for the first time in the literature that although women had significantly longer durations of ICU and hospital stays and a higher rate of wound infection, sex difference did not significantly affect major early postoperative outcomes in elderly patients undergoing OPCAB surgery.
