Prof. Dr. Isabel Couto is an Associate Professor at the Unit of Medical Microbiology, Instituto Higiene e Medicina Tropical, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (IHMT-NOVA). She obtained a PhD in Biology - Molecular Biology by FCT-NOVA (1997). She is the Leader of the research group Tuberculosis, HIV, and Opportunistic Pathogens of the R&D Center Global Health and Tropical Medicine (GHTM). She is the coordinator of 5 R&D-funded projects and a team member in over 25 R&D projects with national and international research teams. Her Main research interests include antibiotic and biocide resistance mechanisms in staphylococci, efflux-driven antimicrobial resistance in bacteria, and molecular detection of pathogenic bacteria, including drug-resistant staphylococci and mycobacteria. She is also a member of the Scientific Council for the MSc course in Biomedical Sciences (IHMT-NOVA) and the MSc course in Medical Microbiology (NOVA). Member of the General Council of IHMT-UNL. Vice-President of the Scientific Council of IHMT-NOVA.
