Crop heat units (CHU) and ≥10 °C active accumulated temperature (≥10 °C AAT) are important indexes to quantify the effects of temperature on soybean development. The relative maturity group (RMG) is widely used in the classification of different soybean varieties. However, CHU and ≥10 °C AAT (AAT) were applied in Canada and northeastern China, respectively, and the relationships among CHU, AAT and RMG are poorly documented. The objective of this study is to analyze the conversion function among CHU, AAT and RMG based on two datasets. The first dataset was obtained to analyze the relationship between RMG and AAT in 395 varieties in Northeast China. The second dataset was obtained to calculate the relationship between CHU and AAT at 95 weather stations based on 30-year climatic data (1990–2019). The results showed that both relationships were significantly and positively correlated, and the R-square of these relationships were 0.90 and 0.98, respectively. The distribution of CHU or AAT in the Northeast is proposed. These results can be extensively used for predicting the CHU or AAT of soybean cultivars given the known RMG, thus determining the adaptation zone as well as the growth stage of agricultural practices and responses to heat accumulation. The conclusion of the current study is expected to be widely adopted by soybean regionalization and germplasm exchanges throughout the world.
Flowering time and photoperiod sensitivity are fundamental traits that determine soybean adaptation to a given region or a wide range of geographic environments. The General Regulatory Factors (GRFs), also known as 14-3-3 family, are involved in protein–protein interactions in a phosphorylation-dependent manner, thus regulating ubiquitous biological processes, such as photoperiodic flowering, plant immunity and stress response. In this study, 20 soybean GmSGF14 genes were identified and divided into two categories according to phylogenetic relationships and structural characteristics. Real-time quantitative PCR analysis revealed that GmSGF14g, GmSGF14i, GmSGF14j, GmSGF14k, GmSGF14m and GmSGF14s were highly expressed in all tissues compared to other GmSGF14 genes. In addition, we found that the transcript levels of GmSGF14 family genes in leaves varied significantly under different photoperiodic conditions, indicating that their expression responds to photoperiod. To explore the role of GmSGF14 in the regulation of soybean flowering, the geographical distribution of major haplotypes and their association with flowering time in six environments among 207 soybean germplasms were studied. Haplotype analysis confirmed that the GmSGF14mH4 harboring a frameshift mutation in the 14-3-3 domain was associated with later flowering. Geographical distribution analysis demonstrated that the haplotypes related to early flowering were frequently found in high-latitude regions, while the haplotypes associated with late flowering were mostly distributed in low-latitude regions of China. Taken together, our results reveal that the GmSGF14 family genes play essential roles in photoperiodic flowering and geographical adaptation of soybean, providing theoretical support for further exploring the function of specific genes in this family and varietal improvement for wide adaptability.
Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] is a short-day (SD) plant that is sensitive to photoperiod, which influences flowering, maturity, and even adaptation. TEOSINTE-BRANCHED1/CYCLOIDEA/PROLIFERATING CELL FACTOR (TCP) transcription factors have been shown to regulate photoperiodic flowering. However, the roles of TCPs in SD plants such as soybean, rice, and maize remain largely unknown. In this study, we cloned the GmTCP40 gene from soybean and investigated its expression pattern and function. Compared with wild-type (WT) plants, GmTCP40-overexpression plants flowered earlier under long-day (LD) conditions but not under SD conditions. Consistent with this, the overexpression lines showed upregulation of the flowering-related genes GmFT2a, GmFT2b, GmFT5a, GmFT6, GmAP1a, GmAP1b, GmAP1c, GmSOC1a, GmSOC1b, GmFULa, and GmAG under LD conditions. Further investigation revealed that GmTCP40 binds to the GmAP1a promoter and promotes its expression. Analysis of the GmTCP40 haplotypes and phenotypes of soybean accessions demonstrated that one GmTCP40 haplotype (Hap6) may contribute to delayed flowering at low latitudes. Taken together, our findings provide preliminary insights into the regulation of flowering time by GmTCP40 while laying a foundation for future research on other members of the GmTCP family and for efforts to enhance soybean adaptability.
Heike 88, a new soybean variety developed through strategic hybridization of Heijiao 08-1611 × Heihe 43 followed by pedigree selection, was evaluated across seven locations in Heilongjiang Province from 2019 to 2022. The variety demonstrated stable performance with a 10.3% average yield advantage over regional check varieties and mean yields of 3188 kg ha−1. Principal component analysis revealed that genetic variation accounted for 43.4% and 32.6% of performance variance in the first two components, indicating successful transgressive segregation where the pure line exceeded both parental lines through complementary gene action. Performance relative to parental averages ranged from −20% to +40% across the temperature gradient, demonstrating strong genotype-environment interaction effects. Machine learning analysis identified year effect (13% importance), accumulated temperature (7.6% importance), and oil content (4% importance) as primary yield drivers. Complete resistance to soybean mosaic virous (SMV) and cyst nematode attack was observed across all locations, with excellent gray leaf spot resistance (grades 0–1) maintained under natural pathogen pressure. Seed quality parameters remained stable across environments, with protein content ranging from 41.69% to 42.25% and oil content from 19.74% to 20.13%, indicating minimal environmental effects on compositional traits. Yield stability improved progressively over the evaluation period, with the coefficient of variation decreasing from 18.7% in 2019 to 6.7% in 2022, while absolute yields increased from 2550 to 3200 kg ha−1. These results demonstrate successful exploitation of transgressive segregation for regional adaptation through strategic parent selection and pedigree breeding, supporting commercial deployment in northern China’s challenging production environments while providing methodological guidance for future breeding programs targeting environmental specificity.
Heike 60, a cold-tolerant soybean cultivar developed at the Heihe Branch of the Heilongjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences, was evaluated across seven locations in Heilongjiang Province, northeastern China, over four growing seasons (2015–2018), generating 28 site–year environments. The objectives were to characterize yield performance and stability, partition sources of agronomic variation, and identify the yield component pathways through which the cultivar adapts to contrasting cold–temperate environments. Grain yield across the trial network ranged from 1591 to 3219 kg ha−1 with a grand mean of 2688 kg ha−1, and Heike 60 consistently outperformed the regional check variety Heihe 43 across all evaluated locations and seasons, with a mean yield advantage of 11.5%. Two-way ANOVA revealed highly significant (p < 0.001) Year, Location, and Year × Location interaction effects for all eight agronomic traits examined, with the interaction term accounting for the largest proportion of yield variance, indicating that relative site performance was not consistent across seasons. Five of the seven locations were classified as stable by the coefficient of variation criterion (CV < 15%), with Eberhart–Russell regression coefficients of 1.000 across all sites confirming average and proportional responsiveness to environmental quality. Hierarchical cluster analysis partitioned the 24-core site–year environments into three agronomically distinct groups reflecting differences in accumulated thermal resources: a pod number-compensating profile under lower temperature accumulation, a seed weight-dominated profile under higher post-anthesis thermal supply, and a balanced yield component expression representing the predominant growing conditions of the region. Random forest modeling identified hundred-seed weight, pods per plant, and growth period as the primary predictors of grain yield across environments. Collectively, the results demonstrate that Heike 60 possesses broad adaptability and phenotypic plasticity across the cold–temperate soybean production zone of Heilongjiang Province, combining competitive mean yield with stable performance across diverse environmental conditions.
