Filipe Mergulhão is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, where he is in charge of different courses, including Biological Sciences, Protein Engineering, Downstream Processing, and Biological Engineering Project. He completed his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering in 2002 at Instituto Superior Técnico (University of Lisbon) and the degree in Chemical Engineering in 1998 (5-year program) in the same institution. He is the Coordinator of the Biotechnology research group of Laboratory for Process Engineering, Environment, Biotechnology and Energy (University of Porto). He has published more than 90 articles in international journals and 11 book chapters, supervised 6 Ph.D. thesis and co-supervised 2. He participated as Principal Investigator in 67 projects and as a Researcher in 23 projects, and works in the areas of Industrial Biotechnology, Bioproducts, Biomaterials, and Medical Biotechnology with an emphasis on Biomaterials.
