We compute the O(α s ) corrections to the Wilson coefficients of the dimension five operators in inclusive semileptonic B decays in the limit of a massless final quark. Our calculation agrees with reparametrization invariance and with previous results for the total width and improves the constraints on the shape functions that enter those decays.

Two of the elements of the Cabibbo–Kobayashi–Maskawa quark mixing matrix, $$|V_{ub}|$$ | V ub | and $$|V_{cb}|$$ | V cb | , are extracted from semileptonic B decays. The results of the B factories, analysed in the light of the most recent theoretical calculations, remain puzzling, because for both $$|V_{ub}|$$ | V ub | and $$|V_{cb}|$$ | V cb | the exclusive and inclusive determinations are in clear tension. Further, measurements in the $$\tau $$ τ channels at Belle, Babar, and LHCb show discrepancies with the Standard Model predictions, pointing to a possible violation of lepton flavor universality. LHCb and Belle II have the potential to resolve these issues in the next few years. This article summarizes the discussions and results obtained at the MITP workshop held on April 9–13, 2018, in Mainz, Germany, with the goal to develop a medium-term strategy of analyses and calculations aimed at solving the puzzles. Lattice and continuum theorists working together with experimentalists have discussed how to reshape the semileptonic analyses in view of the much higher luminosity expected at Belle II, searching for ways to systematically validate the theoretical predictions in both exclusive and inclusive B decays, and to exploit the rich possibilities at LHCb.

We develop a method to compute the inclusive semileptonic decay rate of hadrons fully nonperturbatively using lattice QCD simulations. The sum over all possible final states is achieved by a calculation of the forward-scattering matrix elements on the lattice, and the phase-space integral is evaluated using their dependence on the time separation between two inserted currents. We perform a pilot lattice computation for the B¯s→Xcℓν¯ decay with an unphysical bottom quark mass and compare the results with the corresponding OPE calculation. The method to treat the inclusive processes on the lattice can be applied to other processes, such as the lepton-nucleon inelastic scattering.

Energy efficiency in buildings is a key issue in the current energy transition. In order to reduce building energy consumption, users’ behaviour and the perception of indoor environmental comfort must be taken into account; these aspects are inextricably linked to energy demand, consumption and related costs. In this paper, we present the methodological framework, technological solutions and outcomes of the ComfortSense project. ComfortSense aimed at decoupling energy demand from indoor comfort. We focused on Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems in buildings, on users’ behaviour and on comfort perception by treating buildings as socio-technical systems. Our approach - which was multidisciplinary and included the contribution of sociologists, physicists and computer scientists - was based on Internet of Things technologies, on a Living Lab design and testing process and on a Crowdsensing approach. Physical parameters (objective variables), such as temperature, CO2 concentration and relative humidity, were measured by a Wireless Sensor Network and by wearable devices, while the users’ perception of comfort (subjective variables) were recorded as real-time feedback through a Mobile App in three pilot buildings of the University of Turin, engaging about a thousand buildings’ users (professors, researchers, students and employees). Objective and subjective variables were correlated through an ad-hoc Direct Virtual Sensor. Thanks to the Direct Virtual Sensor forecasting we demonstrated that, adopting an adaptive indoor comfort management, users’ comfort can be remarkably improved while reducing the energy consumption of HVAC systems.

We propose a simple tool to help the energy management of a large building stock defining clusters of buildings with the same function, setting alert thresholds for each cluster, and easily recognizing outliers. The objective is to enable a building management system to be used for detection of abnormal energy use. We start reviewing energy performance indicators, and how they feed into data visualization (DataViz) tools for a large building stock, especially for university campuses. After a brief presentation of the University of Turin’s building stock which represents our case study, we perform an explorative analysis based on the Multidimensional Detective approach by Inselberg, using the Scatter Plot Matrix and the Parallel Coordinates methods. The k-means clustering algorithm is then applied on the same dataset to test the hypotheses made during the explorative analysis. Our results show that DataViz techniques provide quick and user-friendly solutions for the energy management of a large stock of buildings. In particular, they help identifying clusters of buildings and outliers and setting alert thresholds for various Energy Efficiency Indices.

In this paper, we propose a simple tool to help the energy management of a large buildings stock defining clusters of buildings with the same function, setting alert thresholds for each cluster, and easily recognizing outliers. The objective is to enable a building management system to be used for detection of abnormal energy use. First, we framed the issue of energy performance indicators, and how they feed into data visualization (Data Viz) tools for a large building stock, especially for university campuses. Both for Data Viz and clustering algorithm processes, we discussed two possible approaches to choose the right number of clusters and the identification of alert thresholds and outliers, after a brief presentation of the University of Turin's building stock case study. Different Data Viz tools have been studied to apply a specific clustering algorithm, the k-means one. An explorative analysis based on the general Multidimensional detective approach by Inselberg has been performed. Two multidimensional analysis tools, the Scatter Plot Matrix and the Parallel coordinates method have been used. Secondly, the k-means clustering algorithm has been applied on the same dataset in order to test the hypothesis made during the explorative analysis. Data Viz techniques developed in this study revealed to be very useful to explore quickly and simply a large buildings' stock, identifying the worst efficient buildings and clustering them according to their distinct functions.

We present a new lattice determination of some of the parameters appearing both in the Operator Product Expansion (OPE) analysis of the inclusive semileptonic B-meson decays and in the Heavy Quark Expansion (HQE) of the pseudoscalar (PS) and vector (V) heavy-light meson masses. We perform a lattice QCD (LQCD) computation of PS and V heavy-light meson masses for heavy-quark masses mh in the range from [see formula in PDF] to ≃ [see formula in PDF]. We employed the Nf = 2 + 1 + 1 gauge configurations of the European Twisted Mass Collaboration (ETMC) at three values of the lattice spacing a ≃ (0.062,0.082,0.089) fm with pion masses in the range Mπ ≃ (210 - 450) MeV. The heavy-quark mass is simulated directly on the lattice up to ≃ [see formula in PDF]. The interpolation to the physical [see formula in PDF] is performed using the ETMC ratio method and adopting the kinetic mass scheme. We obtain [see formula in PDF] (1 GeV) = 4.61(20) GeV (m̅b(m̅b) = 4.26(18) GeV in the MS scheme). The lattice data are analyzed in terms of the HQE and the matrix elements of dimension-4 and dimension-5 operators are extracted with good precision, namely: [see formula in PDF] and [see formula in PDF]. The data also allow for an estimate of the dimension-6 operator matrix elements.

Stringent relations between the B(∗) → D(∗) form factors exist in the heavy quark limit and the leading symmetry breaking corrections are known. We reconsider their uncertainty and role in the analysis of recent Belle data for B → D(∗)ℓν with model-independent parametrizations and in the related prediction of R(D(∗)). We find |Vcb| = 41.5(1.3) 10−3 and |Vcb| = 40.6(− 1.3+ 1.2) 10−3 using input from Light Cone Sum Rules, and R(D∗) = 0.260(8).

We present a precise lattice computation of pseudoscalar and vector heavy-light meson masses for heavy-quark masses ranging from the physical charm mass up to ≃4 times the physical b-quark mass. We employ the gauge configurations generated by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration (ETMC) with Nf=2+1+1 dynamical quarks at three values of the lattice spacing (a≃0.062,0.082,0.089 fm) with pion masses in the range Mπ≃210–450 MeV. The heavy-quark mass is simulated directly on the lattice up to ≃3 times the physical charm mass. The interpolation to the physical b-quark mass is performed using the ETMC ratio method, based on ratios of the meson masses computed at nearby heavy-quark masses, and adopting the kinetic mass scheme. The extrapolation to the physical pion mass and to the continuum limit yields mbkin(1 GeV)=4.61(20) GeV, which corresponds to m¯b(m¯b)=4.26(18) GeV in the MS¯ scheme. The lattice data are analyzed in terms of the heavy-quark expansion (HQE) and the matrix elements of dimension-four and dimension-five operators are extracted with a good precision, namely, Λ¯=0.552(26) GeV, μπ2=0.321(32) GeV2, and μG2(mb)=0.253(25) GeV2. The data also allow for a rough estimate of the dimension-six operator matrix elements. As the HQE parameters play a crucial role in the inclusive determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements Vub and Vcb, their precise determination on the lattice may eventually validate and improve the analyses based on fits to the semileptonic moments.

We use recent Belle results on $\bar{B}^0\rightarrow D^{*+}l^-\bar{\nu}_l$ decays to extract the CKM element $|V_{cb}|$ with two different but well-founded parameterizations of the form factors. We show that the CLN and BGL parameterizations lead to quite different results for $|V_{cb}|$ and provide a simple explanation of this unexpected behaviour. A long lasting discrepancy between the inclusive and exclusive determinations of $|V_{cb}|$ may have to be thoroughly reconsidered.Comment: 6 pages. A few clarifications added. We use artificial neural networks to parametrize the shape functions in inclusive semileptonic B decays without charm. Our approach avoids the adoption of functional form models and allows for a straightforward implementation of all experimental and theoretical constraints on the shape functions. The results are used to extract |Vub| in the GGOU framework and compared with the original GGOU paper and the latest HFAG results, finding good agreement in both cases. We study the effect of dimension 7 and 8 operators on inclusive semileptonic B decays and the extraction of |Vcb|. Using moments of semileptonic B decay spectra and information based on the Lowest-Lying State saturation Approximation (LLSA) we perform a global fit of the nonperturbative parameters of the heavy quark expansion including for the first time the O(1/mb^{4,5}) contributions. Higher power corrections appear to have a very small effect on the extraction of |Vcb|, independently of the weight we attribute to the LLSA.

Weak radiative decays of the B mesons belong to the most important flavor changing processes that provide constraints on physics at the TeV scale. In the derivation of such constraints, accurate standard model predictions for the inclusive branching ratios play a crucial role. In the current Letter we present an update of these predictions, incorporating all our results for the O(αs2) and lower-order perturbative corrections that have been calculated after 2006. New estimates of nonperturbative effects are taken into account, too. For the CP- and isospin-averaged branching ratios, we find Bsγ=(3.36±0.23)×10−4 and Bdγ=(1.73−0.22+0.12)×10−5, for Eγ>1.6 GeV. Both results remain in agreement with the current experimental averages. Normalizing their sum to the inclusive semileptonic branching ratio, we obtain Rγ≡(Bsγ+Bdγ)/Bcℓν=(3.31±0.22)×10−3. A new bound from Bsγ on the charged Higgs boson mass in the two-Higgs-doublet-model II reads MH±>480 GeV at 95% C.L.

The m W − m Z interdependence in the Standard Model is studied in the \( \overline{M\ S} \) scheme at the two-loop level, including the known higher-order contributions. The relevant radiative parameters, \( \varDelta \widehat{\alpha}\left(\mu \right) \) , \( \varDelta {\widehat{r}}_W \) , \( \widehat{\rho} \) are computed at O(α 2) taking into account higherorder QCD corrections and the resummation of the reducible contributions. We obtain m W = 80.357 ± 0.009 ± 0.003 GeV where the errors refer to the parametric and theoretical uncertainties, respectively. A comparison with the known result in the On-Shell scheme gives a difference of ≈ 6 MeV. As a byproduct of our calculation we also obtain the \( \overline{M\ S} \) electromagnetic coupling and the weak mixing angle at the top mass scale, \( \widehat{\alpha}\left({M}_t\right)={(127.73)}^{-1}\pm 0.0000003 \) and \( { \sin}^2{\widehat{\theta}}_W\left({M}_t\right)=0.23462\pm 0.00012 \).
