Unmanned-aerial-vehicle (UAV) enabled radio access is an effective technology to improve the wireless coverage, in particular for remote and disaster-struck areas. It will become a key enabler in the forthcoming 5G heterogeneous cellular networks to provide improved and resilient coverage. In this work, we study edge caching for multiple UAV-enabled radio access networks (UAV-RANs) and investigate how the overall spectral efficiency (SE) can be improved by efficient edge caching. In this context, UAV base stations (UBSs) may not serve the immediate close-by users, but serve the users based on the requested contents, which brings the service contents closer to users. Based on analyses of the SE achieved by the content-centric UAV-RAN, a hybrid caching strategy is proposed to further improve the SE. In order to cache more files with limited cache resources while guaranteeing the quality-of-service (QoS), the contents are divided into two subsets, a popular set and a less popular set, based on their popularity profile that follows Zipf distribution. The popular files, according to the proposed hybrid caching strategy, are cached at all the UBSs, while each less popular file is cached at one UBS only. The overall SE is maximized by finding an optimal popularity threshold between the two subsets. By relaxing the formulated problem, analytical expression for the optimized threshold is derived. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by numerical examples where existing benchmark schemes are compared and outperformed.

We investigate cache technique from the spatial view and study its impact on the relaying networks. In particular, we consider a dual‐hop relaying network, where decode‐and‐forward (DF) relays can assist the data transmission from the source to the destination. In addition to the traditional dual‐hop relaying, we also consider the cache from the spatial view, where the source can prestore the data among the memories of the nodes around the destination. For the DF relaying networks without and with cache, we study the system performance by deriving the analytical expressions of outage probability and symbol error rate (SER). We also derive the asymptotic outage probability and SER in the high regime of transmit power, from which we find the system diversity order can be rapidly increased by using cache and the system performance can be significantly improved. Simulation and numerical results are demonstrated to verify the proposed studies and find that the system power resources can be efficiently saved by using cache technique.
Content caching at the base stations (BSs) is a promising strategy that can provide improved quality-of-service (QoS) provisioning for content-centric services, and at the same time reduce instantaneous backhaul payload. This paper focuses on the applications of the caching mechanism in the downlink of coordinated multipoint (CoMP) transmission, where the collaborating BSs cooperatively serve the user equipments (UEs). A cache-aided transmission scheme for downlink CoMP with limited local cache resources at the BSs is proposed to improve QoS provisioning in terms of outage performance. In order to cache files more efficiently while guaranteeing the QoS, the contents are divided into two sets, a popular set and a less popular set, according to their popularity profile following the Zipf model. The popular files are cached at all the BSs, while the less popular files are cached only at part of the BSs in a cache cluster subject to the strategy design. Furthermore, based on the popularity of the requested files, UEs are categorized into two groups and the notion of request competition between the two groups is introduced. The corresponding request competition model and admission probabilities for transmission requests are analyzed. Based on the request competition model, the best cache placement strategy for the popular and less popular sets that minimizes the average outage probability is derived. Numerical results show that the proposed cache-aided CoMP scheme outperforms the baseline traditional caching strategies in terms of the average transmission outage.

We consider an unmanned-aerial-vehicle (UAV) enabled localization system with one typical ground user in a circular area under non-line-of-sight channels, where $N$ UAVs are deployed as anchors to localize the user via received signal strength. Our objective is to minimize the average (localization) mean-square-error (MSE) in the area by optimizing the anchors’ placement. To this end, we first derive a concise lower-bound of MSE with fixed user position. Then, for the user uniformly distributing in the circular area, we prove that deploying the UAV anchors with symmetrical horizontal-angles and same distance to the area center can minimize or almost minimize the MSE lower-bound, whereas such distance needs to be determined, neither increasing nor decreasing it can always improve the average MSE. A problem to find such distance is formulated and furthermore converted to a form that can be solved by one-dimensional search, based on which, we propose to deploy the anchors where the minimum MSE lower-bound is achieved for minimizing MSE. The effectiveness of the proposed placement is verified by numerical studies.
