We present new spectroscopic orbits for the bright binaries Mizar B, 3 Pup, ν Gem, 2 Lac, and ϕ Aql. Our analysis is based on medium-resolution (R≈ 12,000) échelle spectra obtained with the 0.81-m telescope and fiber-fed eShel spectrograph of the Three College Observatory (Greensboro, NC, USA) between 2015 and 2024. Orbital elements were inferred with an affine-invariant Markov-chain Monte-Carlo sampler; convergence was verified through the integrated autocorrelation time and the Gelman–Rubin statistic. Errors quote the 16th–84th-percentile credible intervals. Compared with previously published orbital solutions for the studied stars, our method improves the root-mean-square residuals by 25–50% and bring the 1σ uncertainties on the radial velocity (RV) semi-amplitudes down to 0.02–0.15 km s−1. These gains translate into markedly tighter mass functions and systemic RVs, providing a robust dynamical baseline for future interferometric and photometric studies. A complete Python analysis pipeline is openly available in a GitHub repository, ensuring full reproducibility. The results demonstrate that a Bayesian RV analysis with well-motivated priors and rigorous convergence checks yields orbital parameters that are both more precise and more reproducible than previous determinations, while offering fully transparent uncertainty budgets.

We present a Doppler tomography study of the Be star HD 698, recently resolved via interferometry as a post-mass-transfer binary system consisting of a Be star and a stripped, pre-subdwarf companion. Based on 76 high-resolution optical spectra obtained between 2014 and 2023, we analyze the Hα and Hβ emission lines and apply Doppler tomography to map the structure of the circumstellar disk. The Hα line reveals an asymmetric, multi-component velocity distribution, with an emission feature closely following the orbital motion of the companion. V/R variations in both Hα and Hβ lines are phase-locked with the companion’s orbital motion, indicating a tidally induced disk asymmetry. We discuss possible origins of the companion-centered Hα emission, including a circumsecondary disk, a transient mass-transfer stream, and stellar wind.

We report the results of spectroscopic and photometric observations of the emission-line object IRAS 07080+0605 carried out in 2004–2021. We found that the object is significantly underluminous for its spectroscopic properties (T eff = 8500 ± 500 K, log g = 2.0 ± 0.5), if a strong visual attenuation by a factor of ∼43 found through the spectral energy distribution modeling is not taken into account. Visual brightness variations with a stable period of 190 days but a variable amplitude of ∼0.2 mag were found in the ASAS SN data and attributed to variable circumstellar extinction in the dusty disk. We also found that the observed behavior of IRAS 07080+0605 is similar to that of the protoplanetary nebula Red Rectangle. The dusty disk of IRAS 07080+0605 shows the presence of carbonaceous particles (∼10%–20% of the total dust content) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission bands. However, IRAS 07080+0605 shows no obvious signs of the refractory element depletion, which is common in post–asymptotic giant branch (AGB) dusty binaries, or of a visual nebula. Absorption-line positions vary with an amplitude of ∼25 km s−1, suggesting the presence of a secondary component. Spectroscopic monitoring on a timescale from days to months is needed to search for regular variations. We conclude that IRAS 07080+0605 is most likely a binary system with an A-type component on its way toward the post-AGB evolutionary stage, as binarity is capable of explaining most of the observed features.

Early and reliable detection of P-wave arrivals is critical for seismic monitoring and earthquake early warning, particularly under low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and non-stationary noise conditions. This study presents an automatic detection method based on singular value decomposition (SVD) entropy computed in sliding time windows with local signal filtering. Within this framework, the P-wave onset is interpreted as a local structural change in the signal rather than a simple energy increase. SVD entropy captures the redistribution of energy among dominant signal components, providing high sensitivity to the initial P-wave arrival even at moderate and low noise levels (SNR≥2). The method was validated using real seismic data from four regional stations operating under different noise conditions. Analysis of detection parameters revealed strong station dependence. For stations affected by low-frequency drift, polynomial detrending was identified as a necessary preprocessing step to ensure a stable entropy response and reliable detection. The proposed approach achieves detection accuracies of up to 93–98% at SNR≥2, significantly outperforming the classical STA/LTA algorithm and demonstrating performance comparable to modern deep learning methods. Since the method does not require model training or labeled datasets, it provides an interpretable and computationally efficient solution for automatic seismic monitoring. These properties make the proposed approach particularly suitable for real-time seismic monitoring systems and distributed sensor networks operating under limited computational resources. All computational stages were performed at the Farabi Supercomputer Centre of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. The method requires no model training or labeled data, making it an interpretable, robust, and computationally efficient solution for automatic seismic monitoring and early warning systems.

A new spectroscopic study of HR 4049, a post-AGB star in a binary system, based on échelle spectra taken between 2019 and 2025 with the 0.81 m telescope of the Three College Observatory (North Carolina, USA) at a resolution of R ≈ 12,000 is reported. A cross-correlation analysis of 73 spectra of a single C i multiplet in the 4760–4780 Å range yielded the following orbital parameters: the orbital period P=428.474±0.002 days, eccentricity e=0.29±0.01, argument of periastron ω=242.3∘±0.3∘, epoch of periastron T0=2,458,383.2±0.6, heliocentric systemic radial velocity γ=−30.12±0.09 km s−1, and semi-amplitude of the radial velocity curve K1=15.52±0.13 km s−1. Phase-dependent variations of the Hα line profile indicate dynamic processes in the circumstellar environment. The luminosity of HR 4049 was refined using the Gaia EDR3 parallax (0.71±0.10 mas), corresponding to a distance of 1397±170 pc, and the average visual magnitude in the brightest state (mV=5.35 mag). The derived luminosity, log(L/L⊙)=4.22±0.12, suggests an initial mass of 3.0–4.0 M⊙. Analysis of the mass function and most probable orbital inclinations (60°–75°) leads to current masses of ∼0.75M⊙ for the primary and 0.70–0.82M⊙ for the secondary component. The results confirm the system’s long-term orbital stability and provide further insights for future research into the nature of post-AGB binaries.

Supergiants are luminous post-main-sequence massive stars whose effective temperatures (Teff) are key inputs for stellar evolution and feedback studies. We present a photometry-based procedure to derive Teff for a sample of galactic supergiants of spectral types B and A by fitting the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) in the UV-to-mid-IR range to ATLAS9 model spectra converted into synthetic photometry using the corresponding passband transmission profiles while simultaneously solving for the line-of-sight extinction. The SEDs were constructed from published data taken in different photometric systems (Johnson or Kron–Cousins UBVRI, Strömgren uvby, JHK magnitudes from various sources, and AllWISE) and supplemented with UV TD-1 fluxes for brighter stars. The interstellar extinction law is based on Cardelli, Clayton & Mathis approximation assuming a total-to-selective ratio RV=AV/E(B−V)=3.1. The best-fitting parameters are obtained by minimizing a covariance-weighted χ2 statistic in logarithmic flux space over a grid of AV values and a discrete model grid. We test the method on 20 targets and find generally good agreement with published literature temperature estimates. The main limitations are non-simultaneous photometry for possibly variable objects and the residual coupling between temperature and reddening in broadband SED fitting. This study is intended as a methodological demonstration on a pilot sample rather than a definitive parameter catalog.
