Dr. M. Packirisamy is Professor and Concordia Research Chair at the Department of
Mechanical Engineering at Concordia University. He received a B.E. in mechanical engineering
from the University of Madras, Madras, India; an M.S. in mechanical engineering from the Indian
Institute of Technology, Madras, India; and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Concordia
University, Montreal, Canada. He is the recipient of the Member Royal Society of Canada College,
Fellow National Academy of Inventors (US), Fellow Indian National Academy of Engineering,
Fellow Engineering Institute of Canada, Fellow Canadian Academy of Engineering, Fellow
American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Fellow Institution of Engineers India, Fellow
Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering, the I.W. Smith award from the Canadian Society for
Mechanical Engineering, Concordia University Research Fellow, Petro Canada Young
Innovator Award, and the ENCS Young Research Achievement Award. As an author of around 450
articles published in journals and conference proceedings and 30 inventions, he published a
textbook, BioMEMS: Engineering and Science Perspectives, and six book chapters. His recent
invention on energy harvesting from the photosynthesis of blue-green algae has more than 300
citations from around the world and was covered by the media of most countries throughout the
world.
