The crushed rocks are used as a filling material in mined-out areas of underground mining. Compared with the man-made filling materials, the crushed rocks exhibit higher compressibility and lower stability, which may result in instability of surrounding rock and surface subsidence. To study the creep compaction behavior of crushed mudstones, a series of creep tests are conducted. The investigations show that the creep compaction behavior of crushed mudstones is highly dependent on the original grain composition and axial stress applied on the samples. The samples with more large particles are easier to deform at initial loading stage for more large voids existed in the samples, and exhibit greater stability than those with smaller particles when the axial stress less than the bearing capacity of “framework structure”. When the axial stress is higher than 20 MPa, the influences of grain composition on deformability of crushed mudstones are weakened after the samples experience repeated compression. At lower stress level, the creep behavior prefers to occur in the samples with smaller particles, which is mainly caused by particles flow without significant particle breakage. As the axial stress increases, the single-sized sample with smaller particle size and the well-graded sample with larger Talbol power exponent n present more unstable under the constant stress. In addition, the filling of the residual intergranular voids by small particles formed by crushing and splitting behavior is the main cause of creep deformation. Lastly, a creep equation of crushed mudstones is obtained in this paper, which can agree with the experimental results in good.

Rock burst is a common tunnel and mine dynamic disaster, especially for deep buried tunnels, which often leads to tunnel construction delay and even induces tunnel collapse and subsidence of strata. Rock drilling is one of the effective pressure relief methods to prevent these disasters. In order to study the influence of borehole diameter on rock mass pressure relief effect, indoor acoustic emission characteristics and numerical simulation of rock samples with different borehole diameter were studied. The research result shows that with the increase in borehole diameter, the effect of borehole pressure relief is better. Different borehole diameters do not change the overall trend of acoustic emission evolution, but it will lead to different acoustic emission count characteristics of rock damage and failure, especially the maximum acoustic emission count characteristics and corresponding strain values. The existence of drilling will lead to the failure stress of rock in advance. Moreover, the existence of drilling causes a great change in the failure mode of the specimen.

Premature failure of rock bolts (cables) due to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) is a phenomenon that has been reported to occur in the underground environment. In the 1990s, many failure accidents of bolts which occurred in the United Kingdom were caused by SCC [1]. In this study, the corrosion behavior and failure mechanism of rock bolt (cable) samples obtained from the underground coal mine were examined and discussed. Macroscopic observation and weight loss tests were carried out for the bolts’ corrosion characteristics without failure. The results show that the bolts with short service time (1.5–2 yrs) underwent uniform corrosion. However, bolts with longer service time (3–8 yrs) experienced different pitting corrosion degrees. The corroding degree of different parts of bolt samples shows the following decreasing trend: bolt head > bolt end > free section. The absolute corrosion degree increased with the service time, while the corrosion rate was the highest in the early stage and dropped down in the later stage. At the same time, the macro‐ and micromethods were used to analyse the failure mechanism in the broken cable sample. Failure of one cable sample with a medium service life (6 yrs) was found to be controlled by the SCC. It was induced by long‐term action of O, Cl, and S in the surrounding rock environment and resulted in pitting corrosion. The pitting corrosion reduced the outer diameter of the rock cable and its bearing capacity, leading to the final fracture.

It is hard to control roadways effectively with a heightened burst risk using conventional support techniques, which may cause burst fatalities in the coal mine. Thus, an in-situ modification method, which involves artificially constructing a cracked zone and a reinforced zone, was proposed to improve the stability of the roadways with heightened burst risk. This paper investigated the efficiency to non of the in-situ modification method in improving burstroadway safety by performing a physical experiment. The results of the experiment indicated that the dynamic stress was obviously reduced in the modified roadway. Accordingly, the influence factors of the in-situ modification method were explored using numerical simulation. It was found that the thickness and the degree of damage to the cracked zone were key governing factors in reducing energy and improving roadway stability. The energy dissipation value increased as the thickness and the degree of damage to the cracked zone increased but showed a slower growth trend when the thickness and the degree of damage to the cracked zone increased to a certain value. In addition, the high sensitivity to dynamic load was found in parts of the roadway side exhibiting a larger stress reduction rate even with thinner cracked zone thickness and a lower degree of damage. This research provides an effective and economical method for coal roadways with heightened burst risk.

Premature failure of rock bolt (cable) due to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) is a phenomenon that has reported to occur in underground environments. In this study, the corrosion behavior and failure mechanism of rock bolt (cable) samples obtained from underground coal mine were examined and discussed. Macroscopic observation and weight loss test were carried out for the corrosion characteristics of the bolts without failure. It is found the corrosion form is uniform corrosion for the bolts with short service time (S-1, S-2). But for the bolts with longer service time (S-3, S-4 and S-5), experience different degrees of pitting corrosion and the number of corrosion spots on the surface of the sample increases with increase of the service time. The corrosion amount of different parts of the bolts shows the rule of bolt head > bolt end > free section, and the corrosion amount increases year by year with the service time, but the corrosion growth rate is fast in the early stage and slows down in the later stage. At the same time, the failure mechanism of the failure sample S-6, which has been in service for 6 years, was analyzed with macro and micro methods. The results show that S-6 have been in O, Cl and S surrounding rock environment for a long time, resulting serious pitting corrosion and spalling of the surface material of the steel strand, which reduces the outer diameter of the rock cable and its bearing capacity, finally leads to the instantaneous SCC fracture of the sample S-6.
