Mismanagement, pollution and excessive use have depleted the world’s water resources, producing a shortage that in some territories is extreme. In this context, the need for potable water prompts the development of new and more efficient wastewater treatment systems to overcome shortages by recovering and reusing contaminated water. Among the water treatment methods, membrane technology is considered one of the most promising. Besides, photocatalytic degradation has become an attractive and efficient technology for water and wastewater treatment. However, the use of unsupported catalysts has as its main impediment their separation from the water once treated. With this, providing the membranes with this photocatalyzed degradation capacity can improve the application of photocatalysts, since in many cases their application improves their recovery and reuse. This review describes the general photocatalytic processes of the main inorganic nanoparticles used as fillers in hybrid polymeric membranes. In addition, the most recent hybrid organic–inorganic membranes are reviewed. Finally, the membranes formed by metal–organic frameworks that can be considered one of the newest and most versatile developments are described.

The substitution of fossil resources by alternatives derived from biomass is a reality that is taking on a growing relevance in the chemical and energy industries. In this sense, fats, oils, and their derived products have become indispensable inputs due to their broad functional attributes, stable price and sustainable character. Acrylated vegetable oils are considered to be very versatile materials for very broad applications (such as in adhesives, coatings or inks) since, in the presence of photoinitiators, they can be polymerized by means of UV-initiated free radical polymerizations. The usual process for the synthesis of acrylate vegetable oils consists in reacting epoxidized oils derivatives with acrylic acid. Here, the influence of different catalysts on the activity and selectivity of the process of acrylation of epoxidized soybean oil is studied. In addition, a novel one-step method for direct acrylation of vegetable oils is also explored. This new approach advantageously uses the original vegetable resource and eliminates intermediate reactions, thus being more environmentally efficient. This study offers a simple and low-cost option for synthesizing a biomass-derived monomer and studies the potential for the 3D printing of complex structures via digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing of the thus-obtained novel sustainable formulations.

The persistence of pharmaceutical pollutants such as ciprofloxacin (CIP) in aquatic environments represents a critical environmental threat due to their potential to induce antimicrobial resistance. Photocatalysis using TiO2-based materials offers a promising solution for their mineralization; however, the limited visible-light response of TiO2 and charge carrier recombination restricts its overall efficiency. In this study, Nb-doped TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized via the sol–gel method, incorporating Nb5+, ions into the TiO2 lattice to modulate the structural and electronic properties of TiO2 to enhance its photocatalytic performance for CIP degradation under UV and visible irradiation. Comprehensive structural, morphological, and optical analyses revealed that Nb incorporation stabilizes the anatase phase, reduces particle size (from 21.42 nm to 10.29 nm), and induces a slight band gap widening (from 2.85 to 2.87 eV) due to the Burstein–Moss effect. Despite this blue shift, Nb-TiO2 exhibited significantly improved photocatalytic activity under visible light, achieving 86% CIP degradation with a reaction rate 16 times higher than that of undoped TiO2. This enhancement was attributed to improved charge separation and higher hydroxyl radical (•OH) generation, driven by excess conduction band electrons introduced by Nb doping. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations further elucidated the electronic structure modifications responsible for this behavior, offering molecular-level insights into Nb dopant-induced property tuning. These findings demonstrate how targeted doping strategies can engineer multifunctional nanomaterials with superior photocatalytic efficiencies, especially under visible light, highlighting the synergy between experimental design and theoretical modeling for environmental applications.
