In coastal China, there is an urgent need to increase land area for agricultural production and urban development, where there is a rapid growing population. One solution is land reclamation from coastal tidelands, but soil salinization is problematic. As such, it is very important to characterize and map the within-field variability of soil salinity in space and time. Conventional methods are often time-consuming, expensive, labor-intensive, and unpractical. Fortunately, proximal sensing has become an important technology in characterizing within-field spatial variability. In this study, we employed the EM38 to study spatial variability of soil salinity in a coastal paddy field. Significant correlation relationship between ECa and EC1:5 (i.e. r >0.9) allowed us to use EM38 data to characterize the spatial variability of soil salinity. Geostatistical methods were used to determine the horizontal spatio-temporal variability of soil salinity over three consecutive years. The study found that the distribution of salinity was heterogeneous and the leaching of salts was more significant in the edges of the study field. By inverting the EM38 data using a Quasi-3D inversion algorithm, the vertical spatio-temporal variability of soil salinity was determined and the leaching of salts over time was easily identified. The methodology of this study can be used as guidance for researchers interested in understanding soil salinity development as well as land managers aiming for effective soil salinity monitoring and management practices. In order to better characterize the variations in soil salinity to a deeper soil profile, the deeper mode of EM38 (i.e., EM38v) as well as other EMI instruments (e.g. DUALEM-421) can be incorporated to conduct Quasi-3D inversions for deeper soil profiles.

Large-scale crop phenology monitoring is critical for agronomic planning and yield prediction applications. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) remote sensing is well-suited for crop growth monitoring due to its nearly all-weather observation capability. Yet, the capability of the dual-polarimetric SAR data for wheat phenology estimation has not been thoroughly investigated. Here, we conducted a comprehensive evaluation of Sentinel-1 SAR polarimetric parameters’ sensibilities on winter wheat’s key phenophases while considering the incidence angle. We extracted 12 polarimetric parameters based on the covariance matrix and a dual-pol-version H-α decomposition. All parameters were evaluated by their temporal profile and feature importance score of Gini impurity with a decremental random forest classification process. A final wheat phenology classification model was built using the best indicator combination. The result shows that the Normalized Shannon Entropy (NSE), Degree of Linear Polarization (DoLP), and Stokes Parameter g2 were the three most important indicators, while the Span, Average Alpha (α2¯), and Backscatter Coefficient σVH0 were the three least important features in discriminating wheat phenology for all three incidence angle groups. The smaller-incidence angle (30–35°) SAR images are better suited for estimating wheat phenology. The combination of NSE, DoLP, and two Stokes Parameters (g2 and g0) constitutes the most effective indicator ensemble. For all eight key phenophases, the average Precision and Recall scores were above 0.8. This study highlighted the potential of dual-polarimetric SAR data for wheat phenology estimation. The feature importance evaluation results provide a reference for future phenology estimation studies using dual-polarimetric SAR data in choosing better-informed indicators.

Identification and diagnosis of tobacco diseases are prerequisites for the scientific prevention and control of these ailments. To address the limitations of traditional methods, such as weak generalization and sensitivity to noise in segmenting tobacco leaf lesions, this study focused on four tobacco diseases: angular leaf spot, brown spot, wildfire disease, and frog eye disease. Building upon the Unet architecture, we developed the Multi-scale Residual Dilated Segmentation Model (MD-Unet) by enhancing the feature extraction module and integrating attention mechanisms. The results demonstrated that MD-Unet achieved 92.75%, 90.94%, 84.93%, and 91.81% for the lesion CPA, recall, IoU, and F1 metrics, respectively, with an overall Dice score of 94.67%. Furthermore, the model parameters, floating-point operations, and inference time per single image for MD-Unet were 4.65 × 107, 2.3392 × 1011, and 65.096 ms, respectively. Compared to Unet, PSP, DeepLab v3+, FCN, SegNet, UNET++, and DoubleU-Net, MD-Unet significantly improved accuracy while effectively managing model complexity, achieving optimal overall performance. This work provides the theoretical foundations and technical support for precise segmentation of tobacco lesions, with potential applications in the segmentation of other plant diseases.
