This paper proposes a piezoelectric energy harvester to supply power for low-consumption devices in intelligent vehicle wheels. The harvester is embedded in the spoke and possesses the ability of self-tuning due to the centrifugal force in the rotational motion. A dynamic model suitable for design is derived through the Euler-Lagrange method and verified by experiments. In order to facilitate the design of the harvester, the concept of design factor is proposed and discussed. The wheel's rotational characteristics is measured by a road test and a harvester is designed for the R16 wheel. An experimental platform with Macro Fiber Composite is built and the output power of 0.61-6.28 mW is achieved at the wheel speeds from 40 to 120 kph on real road test. The results demonstrate that the proposed piezoelectric energy harvester can be applied to establish a wireless self-sufficient intelligent vehicle wheel system.

This paper proposes a time-space domain correlation-based method for gas leakage detection and location. It acquires the propagated signal on the skin of the plate by using a piezoelectric acoustic emission (AE) sensor array. The signal generated from the gas leakage hole (which diameter is less than 2 mm) is time continuous. By collecting and analyzing signals from different sensors’ positions in the array, the correlation among those signals in the time-space domain can be achieved. Then, the directional relationship between the sensor array and the leakage source can be calculated. The method successfully solves the real-time orientation problem of continuous ultrasonic signals generated from leakage sources (the orientation time is about 15 s once), and acquires high accuracy location information of leakage sources by the combination of multiple sets of orientation results. According to the experimental results, the mean value of the location absolute error is 5.83 mm on a one square meter plate, and the maximum location error is generally within a ±10 mm interval. Meanwhile, the error variance is less than 20.17.

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has been widely applied in oil spill detection on the sea surface due to the advantages of wide area coverage, all-weather operation, and multi-polarization characteristics. Sentinel-1 satellites can provide dual-polarized SAR data, and they have high potential for successful application to oil spill detection. However, the characteristics of the sea surface and oil film on different images are not the same when imaging at different locations and in different conditions, which leads to the inconsistent accuracy of these images with the application of the current oil spill detection methods. In order to avoid the above limitation, we propose an oil spill detection method using image stretching based on superpixels and a convolutional neural network. Experiments were carried out on eight Sentinel-1 dual-pol data, and the optimal superpixel number and image stretching parameters are discussed. Mean intersection over union (MIoU) was used to evaluate classification accuracy. The proposed method could effectively improve the classification accuracy; when the expansion and inhibition coefficients of image stretching were set to 1.6 and 1.2 respectively, the experiments achieved a maximum MIoU of 85.4%, 7.3% higher than that without image stretching.

Underwater acoustic ranging and detection usually require hydrophones to have high sensitivity at narrowband operating frequencies. Different from traditional sensitization methods with the help of new materials and solid/liquid resonance structure, this paper proposes a low-cost, high-sensitivity hydrophone based on a resonant air cavity containing an affordable MEMS microphone inside to sense the focused acoustic waves transmitted from the external water across the solid shell into the air cavity. Both finite element simulations and experiments are carried out to test its acoustic sensing performances. Resonance frequency and directivity of the proposed hydrophone are determined by the air cavity size and the acoustic mode, but is independent of the solid shell, which facilitates the precise designability. The sensitivity of the developed hydrophone at the resonance frequency is up to -157 dB re 1V/μPa calibrated by commercial standard hydrophone TC4013. Finally, several further considerations, improvements and applications on the proposed hydrophone are discussed.

In the study of cavitation in room-temperature fluids, the heat transfer between gas and liquid in bubble oscillation is usually assumed to be an adiabatic process for simplification. However, this heat transfer and thermodynamic mechanism is not yet understood in cryogenic fluids, especially under small amplitude oscillation conditions excited by ultrasonic field. This article studies bubble thermodynamic model under an external ultrasonic field based on the heat transfer equation for cryogenic fluids. The temperature changes inside bubbles are calculated, and the heat transfer mechanism is briefly analyzed. The results indicate that the heat transfer mechanism of bubbles depends on the relationship between ultrasonic frequency and bubble resonance frequency. By analyzing two special cases of dual-bubble and high-pressure environment, it is believed that heat transfer can be approximated as an adiabatic process under high-pressure conditions with ultrasonic frequency far from the resonance frequency. This conclusion can provide a theoretical basis for subsequent accurate calculation of heat-transfer polytropic coefficient, or void faction measurement in cryogenic two-phase flow.
