Dr. Abid Hussain is a Senior Economist and Food Systems Specialist at ICIMOD. Currently, he is leading ICIMOD’s Action Area on Economies. With over two decades of experience in research, implementation, and policy engagement, his work spans resilient agriculture, sustainable food systems, climate change adaptation, rural finance, and mountain economies. Since joining ICIMOD in 2013, he has published his research in several peer reviewed journals, authored book chapters and contributed to multiple global scientific assessments as Author/Lead Author, including the IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report, IPBES’s thematic nexus assessment on biodiversity, water, food, and health interlinkages and the Hindu Kush Himalaya Assessment. Prior to joining ICIMOD, he served as Assistant Professor at the economics departments of two public-sector universities of Pakistan – the University of Haripur (Kyber Pakhtunkhwa) and Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University (Rawalpindi). He has also worked with organisations like Sungi Development Foundation (Abbottabad, Pakistan), MCB Bank (Faisalabad, Pakistan), and the Asian Institute of Technology (Bangkok, Thailand).
In recognition of his expertise, Dr. Hussain is currently serving as one of 78 global experts under the UNFCCC’s UAE–Belém work programme, tasked with identifying/developing 100 indicators for the Global Goals on Adaptation (GGA). He also served as an expert for IPCC's scoping work to draft outlines of WG2 report of 7th Assessment.
