Being a general wave phenomenon, bound states in the continuum (BICs) appear in acoustic, hydrodynamic, and photonic systems of various dimensionalities. Here, we report the first experimental observation of an accidental electromagnetic BIC in a one-dimensional periodic chain of coaxial ceramic disks. We show that the accidental BIC manifests itself as a narrow peak in the transmission spectra of the chain placed between two loop antennas. We demonstrate a linear growth of the radiative quality factor of the BICs with the number of disks that is well described with the developed tight-binding model. We estimate the number of disks when the radiation losses become negligible in comparison to material absorption and, therefore, the chain can be considered as practically infinite. The presented analysis is supported by near-field measurements of the BIC profile. The obtained results provide useful guidelines for practical implementations of structures with BICs opening up horizons for the development of radio-frequency and optical metadevices.

Metasurfaces, composed of artificial meta‐atoms of subwavelength size, can support strong light–matter interaction based on multipolar resonances and plasmonics, hence offering the great capability of empowering nonlinear generation. Recently, owing to their ability to manipulate the amplitude and phase of the nonlinear emission in the subwavelength scale, metasurfaces have been recognized as ultra‐compact, flat optical components for a vast range of applications, including nonlinear imaging, quantum light sources, and ultrasensitive sensing. This review focuses on the recent progress on nonlinear metasurfaces for those applications. The principles and advances of metasurfaces‐based techniques for image generation, including image encoding, holography, and metalens, are investigated and presented. Additionally, the overview and development of spontaneous photon pair generation from metasurfaces are demonstrated and discussed, focusing on the aspects of photon pair generation rate and entanglement of photon pairs. The recent blossoming of the nonlinear metasurfaces field has triggered growing interest to explore its ability to efficiently up‐convert infrared images of arbitrary objects to visible images and achieve spontaneous parametric down‐conversion. This recently emerged direction holds promising potential for the next‐generation technology in night‐vision, quantum computing, and biosensing fields.

The electric field of high-intensity ultrashort laser pulses substantially perturbs an electron subsystem of a crystal and affects its band structure. Laser-driven oscillations of electrons and holes are frequently referred to as a major mechanism of the perturbation in dielectrics and semiconductors. New physical effects arise when the band structure is modified by an ultrashort pulse of the oscillations driven by a few-cycle laser pulse. Assuming the laser-pulse envelope varies slowly compared to the carrier frequency, we derive analytical relations for the laser-modified band structure by utilizing the Keldysh cycle-averaged nonperturbative approach under the approximation of constant effective mass. Formation of indirect-gap transient bands, suppression of the nonlinear absorption on the leading edge of a laser pulse, and cycle-averaged photocurrent generation driven by the pulse envelope are predicted. Analytical scaling with six laser and material parameters is obtained. The reported results establish the limits of validity of the Keldysh photoionization model and advance understanding of the fundamental effects involved in high-intensity ultrafast laser-solid interactions.

In photonic structures, bound states in the continuum (BICs) have recently attracted huge interest in both fundamental and applied research. Quasi-BIC leaky modes resulting from in-plane symmetry breaking in metasurfaces are particularly relevant to applications, due to their high quality factor, which scales as the squared inverse of the asymmetry parameter. Here, we theoretically propose an innovative approach to switch on quasi-BICs on sub-picosecond timescales via optically induced symmetry breaking in semiconductor metasurfaces. The desired effect is granted by exploiting the spatial inhomogeneities in the distribution of photo-excited hot carriers at the single meta-atom nanometric scale. In our simulations, the quasi-BIC state manifests itself as an ultra-sharp dip in transmission, emerging upon pump arrival, and disappearing completely within the carriers’ diffusion timescale. Our strategy allows to envision reconfigurable platforms with switchable high-Q resonances, with ultrafast recovery beyond the limits of carrier relaxation, typical of previous approaches.

In the last few decades, the advent of nanofabrication technologies has boosted the interest in optical devices working in the visible and near-infrared (NIR) region. Metasurfaces are two-dimensional arrangements of nanostructures (or subwavelength elements), called meta-atoms, which allow one to tailor the electromagnetic field at the nanoscale, thus surpassing the capabilities of bulk materials.1,2 The possibility of introducing abrupt changes in phase and amplitude is of paramount importance to focusing,3,4 polarization control,5 nonlinear frequency conversion,6 and wavefront manipulation.7
