Image and video data analysis has become an increasingly important research area with applications in different domains such as security surveillance, healthcare, augmented and virtual reality, video and image editing, activity analysis and recognition, synthetic content generation, distance education, telepresence, remote sensing, sports analytics, art, non-photorealistic rendering, search engines, and social media. Recent advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and particularly deep learning have sparked new research challenges and led to significant advancements, especially in image and video analysis. These advancements have also resulted in significant research and development in other areas such as visualization and visual analytics, and have created new opportunities for future lines of research. In this survey article, we present the current state of the art at the intersection of visualization and visual analytics, and image and video data analysis. We categorize the visualization articles included in our survey based on different taxonomies used in visualization and visual analytics research. We review these articles in terms of task requirements, tools, datasets, and application areas. We also discuss insights based on our survey results, trends and patterns, the current focus of visualization research, and opportunities for future research.

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) (GenAI) has emerged as a transformative force in various fields, and its potential impact on education is particularly profound. This chapter presents the development trends of “GenAI in Education” by exploring the technical background, diverse applications, and multifaceted challenges associated with its adoption in education. The chapter briefly introduces the technical background of GenAI, particularly the development of large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT & Co. It provides key concepts, models, and recent technological advances. The chapter then navigates through the various applications of GenAI or LLMs in education, examining their impact on different levels of education, including school, university, and vocational training. The chapter will highlight how GenAI is reshaping the educational landscape through real-world examples and case studies, from personalized learning experiences to content creation and assessment. It also discusses various technical, ethical, and organizational/educational challenges to using technology in education.

This paper investigates and analyses the nature of errors occurring in Optical Character Recognition (OCR) for Arabic-like scripts. Existing research on the area of OCR for Arabic-like scripts often focuses on achieving the best performance in terms of character error rates. Only little effort targets at the analysis of the nature of these errors (anomalies) that may occur. One such important anomaly is Space Anomaly. This anomaly is due to the presence of breaker characters that are an essential part of Arabic-like scripts. The spaces introduced by breaker characters are not depicted in the ground truth making it hard for OCR to generalize. The OCR model either learns to inhibit the original spaces or to generate extra spaces at places where they are not correct. Due to this confusion, the rendering looks sub-optimal. This analyses and removes space anomalies. We present a joint approach that does not only perform OCR but also handles the space anomalies in a robust manner, hence significantly outperforming the state-of-the-art. Although the implication of the work is shown by improved character recognition rate, the impact of this research is much higher in terms of the correctness of the OCR for useful purposes, especially for rendering. The claim is supported by empirical evaluation and it is shown that the proposed approach achieved the best results.

Multimodal sentiment analysis refers to the use of computers to analyze and identify the emotions that people want to express through the extracted multimodal sentiment features, and it plays a significant role in human-computer interaction and financial market prediction. Most existing approaches to multimodal sentiment analysis use contextual information for modeling, and while this modeling approach can effectively capture the contextual connections within modalities, the correlations between modalities are often overlooked, and the correlations between modalities are also critical to the final recognition results in multimodal sentiment analysis. Therefore, this paper proposes a multimodal sentiment analysis approach based on the universal transformer, a framework that uses the universal transformer to model the connections between multiple modalities while employing effective feature extraction methods to capture the contextual connections of individual modalities. We evaluated our proposed method on two benchmark datasets for multimodal sentiment analysis, CMU-MOSI and CMU-MOSEI, and the results outperformed other methods of the same type.
