Background: Several observational studies have explored the associations between Sjögren’s syndrome (SS) and certain cancers. Nevertheless, the causal relationships remain unclear. Mendelian randomization (MR) method was used to investigate the causality between SS and different types of cancers. Methods: We conducted the two-sample Mendelian randomization with the public genome-wide association studies (GWASs) summary statistics in European population to evaluate the causality between SS and nine types of cancers. The sample size varies from 1080 to 372,373. The inverse variance weighted (IVW) method was used to estimate the causal effects. A Bonferroni-corrected threshold of P < 0.0031 was considered significant, and P value between 0.0031 and 0.05 was considered to be suggestive of an association. Sensitivity analysis was performed to validate the causality. Moreover, additional analysis was used to assess the associations between SS and well-accepted risk factors of cancers. Results: After correcting the heterogeneity and horizontal pleiotropy, the results indicated that patients with SS were significantly associated with an increased risk of lymphomas (odds ratio [OR] = 1.0010, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.0005–1.0015, P = 0.0002) and reduced risks of prostate cancer (OR = 0.9972, 95% CI: 0.9960–0.9985, P = 2.45 × 10−5) and endometrial cancer (OR = 0.9414, 95% CI: 0.9158–0.9676, P = 1.65 × 10−5). Suggestive associations were found in liver and bile duct cancer (OR = 0.9999, 95% CI: 0.9997–1.0000, P = 0.0291) and cancer of urinary tract (OR = 0.9996, 95% CI: 0.9992–1.0000, P = 0.0281). No causal effect of SS on other cancer types was detected. Additional MR analysis indicated that causal effects between SS and cancers were not mediated by the well-accepted risk factors of cancers. No evidence of the causal relationship was observed for cancers on SS. Conclusions: SS had significant causal relationships with lymphomas, prostate cancer, and endometrial cancer, and suggestive evidence of association was found in liver and bile duct cancer and cancer of urinary tract, indicating that SS may play a vital role in the incidence of these malignancies.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent stem cells that can differentiate into a variety of cell types. Therefore, they are widely explored in regenerative medicine. The interaction of MSCs with biomaterials is of great importance for cell proliferation, differentiation and function, and can be strongly influenced by numerous factors, such as the chemical nature and the mechanical properties of the material surface. In this study, we investigated the interaction of bone marrow derived human MSCs with different amorphous and transparent polymers namely polystyrene (PS), polycarbonate (PC), poly(ether imide) (PEI), polyetherurethane (PEU) and poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (PSAN). To ensure that the MSCs were solely in contact to the testing material we applied polymeric inserts, which were prepared from the aforementioned polymers via injection molding. The explored inserts exhibited a similar wettability with advancing contact angles ranging from 84 ± 7° (PEU) to 99 ± 5° (PS) and a surface roughness of R q ≤ 0.86 μm. The micromechanical properties determined by AFM indentation varied from 6 ± 1 GPa (PEU) to 24 ± 5 GPa (PSAN). Cells presented different adhesion rates on the polymer surfaces 24 hours after seeding (45 ± 7% (PS), 63 ± 1% (PC), 75 ± 4% (PEI), 69 ± 2% (PEU) and 61 ± 5% (PSAN)). The cells could proliferate on the polymer surfaces, and the fold change of cell number after 16 days of culture reached to 1.93 ± 0.07 (PS), 3.38 ± 0.11 (PC), 3.65 ± 0.04 (PEI), 2.24 ± 0.15 (PEU) and 3.36 ± 0.09 (PSAN). Differences in cell apoptosis could be observed during the culture. After 7 days, the apoptosis of cells on PC, PEI and PSAN decreased to a level comparable to that on standard tissue culture plate (TCP). All of the tested polymers exhibited low cytotoxicity and allowed high cell viability. Compared to cells on TCP, cells on PC and PEI showed similar morphology, distribution as well as F-actin cytoskeleton organization, whereas cells on PSAN were distributed less evenly and cells on PEU were less oriented. Cells were more likely to form clusters on PS. Conclusively, we demonstrated the influence of polymer substrates on the cellular behaviour of MSCs, which could be included in the development of novel design concepts based on polymeric biomaterials.

As a novel noncoding RNA cluster, miR-17-92 cluster include six members: miR-17, miR-18a, miR-19a, miR-19b-1, miR-20a, and miR-92a. Dysregulation of miR-17-92 has been proved to be connected with the advancement of a series of human diseases, but the roles of miR-17-92 cluster in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) have not been absolutely elaborated. Herein, we determined that miR-17-92 cluster were upregulated significantly in NSCLC tissues, and the cell proliferation, migration and cycle progression of NSCLC were also facilitated under the function of miR-17-92 cluster. Sprouty 4 (SPRY4) was a direct target of miR-92a, and its overexpression restrained the exacerbation of NSCLC induced by miR-92a. Furthermore, the tumor xenograft assay showed that miR-92a facilitated tumor growth by inhibiting the expression of SPRY4 and mediating Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition (EMT) in vivo. Finally, we looked into the synergistic effects of miR-92a and miR-18a on NSCLC, and found that antagomiR-18a treatment arrested the tumor growth rate of xenografted mice markedly. The main recurrence pattern for lung cancer patients after radical surgery is distant metastasis. The probability of pancreatic metastasis in patients diagnosed with lung squamous cell carcinoma is 0.02%, with a poor prognosis. Chemotherapy is the preferred treatment for recurrence. Single lesions or oligometastasis can be surgically resected, and local lesions with compression symptoms can be treated with radiotherapy. The FDA and NMPA have approved first‐line indications for immunotherapy for lung squamous cell carcinoma. Here, we report the case of a 57‐year‐old male patient with lung squamous cell carcinoma who developed pancreatic metastasis after radical resection. The disease progressed after first‐line chemotherapy, and the patient was treated with immunotherapy combined with radiotherapy. We subsequently observed the abscopal effect of intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and pembrolizumab with disappearance of lung metastasis after radiotherapy for pancreatic metastasis. The patient’s tumor symptoms were relieved with prolonged survival.

Acoustic cardiography is a completely new technology, it has great advantages in the rapid diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical value of the fourth heart sound (S4), cardiac systolic dysfunction index (SDI), and the cardiac cycle time-corrected electromechanical activation time (EMATc) in the prediction of post-percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) early ventricular remodeling (EVR) in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). We recruited 161 patients with AMI of 72-h post-PCI, including 44 EVR patients with left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) < 50% and 117 Non-EVR patients (normal left ventricular systolic function group, LVEF ≥ 50%). EMATc, S4, and SDI were independent risk factors for post-PCI early ventricular remodeling in patients with AMI [S4 (OR 2.860, 95% CI 1.297–6.306, p = 0.009), SDI (OR 4.068, 95% CI 1.800–9.194, p = 0.001), and EMATc (OR 1.928, 95% CI 1.420–2.619, p < 0.001)]. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for EMATc was 0.89, with an optimal cutoff point of 12.2, EMATc had a sensitivity of 80% and a specificity of 83%. By contrast, an optimal cutoff point of 100 pg/ml, Serum brain natriuretic peptide had a sensitivity of 46% and a specificity of 83%. Our findings suggest the predictive value of EMATc for the occurrence of EVR in these patients was also identified; EMATc may be a simple, quick, and effective way to diagnose EVR after AMI.
