Background: Mental stress and its consequent mental health disorders (MDs) constitute a significant public health issue. With the advent of machine learning (ML), there is potential to harness computational techniques for better understanding and addressing mental stress and MDs. This comprehensive review seeks to elucidate the current ML methodologies used in this domain to pave the way for enhanced detection, prediction, and analysis of mental stress and its subsequent MDs. Objective: This review aims to investigate the scope of ML methodologies used in the detection, prediction, and analysis of mental stress and its consequent MDs. Methods: Using a rigorous scoping review process with PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews) guidelines, this investigation delves into the latest ML algorithms, preprocessing techniques, and data types used in the context of stress and stress-related MDs. Results: A total of 98 peer-reviewed publications were examined for this review. The findings highlight that support vector machine, neural network, and random forest models consistently exhibited superior accuracy and robustness among all ML algorithms examined. Physiological parameters such as heart rate measurements and skin response are prevalently used as stress predictors due to their rich explanatory information concerning stress and stress-related MDs, as well as the relative ease of data acquisition. The application of dimensionality reduction techniques, including mappings, feature selection, filtering, and noise reduction, is frequently observed as a crucial step preceding the training of ML algorithms. Conclusions: The synthesis of this review identified significant research gaps and outlines future directions for the field. These encompass areas such as model interpretability, model personalization, the incorporation of naturalistic settings, and real-time processing capabilities for the detection and prediction of stress and stress-related MDs.

Measuring pavement roughness and detecting pavement surface defects are two of the most important tasks in pavement management. While existing pavement roughness measurement approaches are expensive, the primary aim of this paper is to use a cost-effective and sufficiently accurate RGB-D sensor to estimate the pavement roughness in the outdoor environment. An algorithm is proposed to process the RGB-D data and autonomously quantify the road roughness. To this end, the RGB-D sensor is calibrated and primary data for estimating the pavement roughness are collected. The collected depth frames and RGB images are registered to create the 3D road surfaces. We found that there is a significant correlation between the estimated International Roughness Index (IRI) using the RGB-D sensor and the manual measured IRI using rod and level. By considering the Power Spectral Density (PSD) analysis and the repeatability of measurement, the results show that the proposed solution can accurately estimate the different pavement roughness.

This study provides a comprehensive literature review to summarize all contributing factors and the logit-based models that were used to predict the severity of crashes. Using the General Estimates Systems (GES) dataset, as a subset and a branch of the National Automotive Sampling System in the US, a Generalized Ordered Logit (GLM) model is developed to predict the crash severity. The developed severity model detects the most important parameters based on characteristics of the driver, the environment, the vehicle, the road, and the type of crash. This study aims to take a more in-depth look into the distraction-related factors as one of the most important groups of contributing factors to traffic crashes. Distraction-related factors are categorized into five groups based on the generating source, including cellular phone, cognitive, passenger, outside events, and in-vehicle activities. Moreover, the effect of distraction on crashes in the presence of other factors is studied. Analyzing the severity of crashes revealed that cell phone usage and distraction caused by in-vehicle activities increase the severity of crashes, whereas other factors of distraction decrease the severity.

This work aims to study factors, such as driver characteristics, environmental conditions, and vehicle characteristics, that affect different crash types with a special focus on distraction parameters. For this purpose, distraction factors are divided into five groups: cellphone usage, cognitive distractions, passengers distracting the driver, outside events attracting the driver’s attention, and in-vehicle activities. Taking the crashes that occurred in the USA into account, the crash types are divided into two main groups, single-vehicle crashes and two-vehicle crashes. Since there were different crash types (alternatives) in the dataset and the probable correlation in the unobserved error term, the Nested Logit model is developed. The results of model illustrate that all of the aforementioned distraction-related factors increase the probability of run-off-road crashes, collision with a fixed object, and rear-end crashes. Cognitive distraction increases the probability of collision with a pedestrian. Distractions caused by passengers or out-of-vehicle events increase the probability of sideswipe crashes. By examining how a factor affects multiple crash type outcomes, it is possible to devise countermeasures, improvements to roadway geometry, and traffic control strategies, while minimizing unintended consequences. The results should be of value in the design of educational programs and propose road safety improvement techniques.

Pavement roughness and surface distress detection is of interest of decision makers due to vehicle safety, user satisfaction, and cost saving. Data collection, as a core of pavement management systems, is required for these detections. There are two major types of data collection: traditional/manual data collection and automated/semi-automated data collection. This paper study different non-destructive tools in detecting cracks and potholes. For this purpose, automated data collection tools, which have been utilized recently are discussed and their applications are criticized. The main issue is the significant amount of money as a capital investment needed to buy the vehicle. The main scope of this paper is to study the approach and related tools that not only are cost-effective but also precise and accurate. The new sensor called Kinect has all of these specifications. It can capture both RGB images and depth which are of significant use in measuring cracks and potholes. This sensor is able to take image of surfaces with adequate resolution to detect cracks along with measurement of distance between sensor and obstacles in front of it which results in depth of defects. This technology has been very recently studied by few researchers in different fields of studies such as project management, biomedical engineering, etc. Pavement management has not paid enough attention to use of Kinect in monitoring and detecting distresses. This paper is aimed at providing a thorough literature review on usage of Kinect in pavement management and finally proposing the best approach which is cost-effective and precise.
