The thermal energy storage properties of a working fluid can be modified by the exothermic and endothermic adsorption and desorption of fluid molecules in the micro/nanoporous materials. In this study, thermogravimetric (TG) analysis experiments and molecular simulations (molecular dynamics, MD, and grand canonical Monte Carlo, GCMC) were employed to examine the thermal energy storage properties of the UIO-66 metal organic framework material, UIO-66/H2O nanofluids and pure water. Our results showed that the molecular simulation calculations were, in principle, consistent with the obtained experimental data. The thermal energy storage performance of UIO-66/H2O nanofluids was enhanced with the increase in the UIO-66 mass fraction. In addition, the differences between the simulation calculations and experimental results could be mainly ascribed to the different structures of UIO-66 and the evaporation of fluid samples. Furthermore, this work indicated that molecular simulations contributed to developing novel working pairs of metal organic heat carriers (MOHCs).

In this paper, the superhydrophobic coating was prepared by spraying the composites of fluorocarbon emulsion and nanosized silica on the conductive glass sheet for the triboelectric energy harvesting from water droplets. The low surface energy of fluorine in the fluorocarbon emulsion and nanosilica renders the coating with the static contact angle and sliding angle of 156.2° and 6.74°, respectively. The conductive aluminum tape was attached on the surface of the superhydrophobic coating to complete the circuit constituted with the aluminum electrode, charged superhydrophobic coating, and the conductive glass sheet. During the contact electrification with the bouncing water droplet, the superhydrophobic coating with the aluminum electrode can obtain the electric energy with an open-circuit voltage of 20 V and short-circuit current of 4.5 μA, respectively. While the control device only produced an open-circuit voltage of 0.2 V. The generated power by one drop was enough to light up 16 commercial LEDs. Results demonstrate that the fluorocarbon/silica composite superhydrophobic coating is potentially a strong candidate for scavenging energy in sliding mode from raindrops.

Synthetic ester exhibits a unique combination of advantages, including remarkable oxidation stability similar to mineral oil, as well as high flash point and biodegradability of natural ester, which makes it a promising insulating fluid alternative for transformers. In this work, a series of medium-chain fatty acid trimethylolpropane (TMP) esters (MTE) were prepared by esterification of a mixture of TMP blended with 3 saturated medium-chain fatty acids (C 8 , C 9 , and C 10 ). The MTEs were synthesized via a vacuum esterification method with the following optimized reaction conditions: 1 wt.% p-toluenesulfonic acid (TsOH) as catalyst, reaction temperature of 120 °C, internal air pressure of 5 kPa, and the acid:TMP molar ratio of 3.2:1. The MTEs were obtained through a rationally designed purification procedure. By characterizing the physical and electrical properties of the 9 MTEs, it is found that the viscosity of MTEs increases with increasing mean molecular weight, the pour point decreases with increasing C 9 content, and the flash point slightly increases with inscreasing C 10 content. The C 8 with a relatively short carbon chain and C 9 with an odd carbon chain may be beneficial for enhancing the oxidation stability of MTEs, whereas the AC breakdown voltage of the MTEs shows a negligible correlation with the fatty acid ratios.

The thermal properties of refrigerants can be modified by adding porous nanoparticles into them. Here, molecular simulations, including molecular dynamics and grand canonical Monte Carlo, were employed to study the thermal energy storage properties of an R161/MOF-5 nanofluid. The results show that the thermodynamic energy change of MOF-5 nanoparticles is linear to the temperature. The adsorption heat calculated by grand canonical Monte Carlo is close to that calculated by the Clausius–Clapeyron equation. Additionally, a negative enhancement of the thermal energy storage capacity of the R161/MOF-5 nanofluid is found near the phase transition area.

A modified shadowgraph imaging setup equipped with a high-speed camera is utilized to achieve a numerical evaluation of temperature, number densities of molecules, ions and electrons to the refractive-index of negative non-breakdown streamer in rapeseed insulating oil for revealing the dynamics of streamer propagation. The non-breakdown streamer is found reaching fairly high speed of 3.01-4.66 km/s during 0-1.7 μs. The following 10 μs is dominated by streamer propagation with the grayscale decreasing continuously for the entire streamer. The dissipation is identified starting at ca. 11.7 μs in the stem region while the head of streamer remaining further propagation. This is followed by a dissipation expansion from the stem to the head regions. The double-unsaturated triglycerides are evidenced as the main ionization components in the non-breakdown streamer, which aid to identify the temperature variations, instead of electrons, positive ions, or dissociation of molecules, contribute mainly to the refractive index drop of the streamer. The mapping for the temperature distribution of streamer is resultantly possible and provides the insight to ascertain the inhomogeneous migration of electrons the kinetic superiority for the streamer evolution dynamics.
