Porous chitosan/saccharomycetes adsorption microspheres were successfully prepared by using silica gel as porogen. The morphology of porous chitosan/saccharomycetes microspheres was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, the interaction between molecules was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and the crystallization property of the microspheres was characterized by X-ray diffraction. The results showed that the adsorption sites of amino and hydroxyl groups had been provided by the porous chitosan/saccharomycetes microspheres for the removal of preservatives, pigments, and other additives in food. The surface roughness of microspheres could be improved by increasing the mass ratio of saccharomycetes. The increase in silica gels could make the microsphere structure more compact. The porous chitosan/saccharomycetes microspheres could be used as adsorbents to adsorb doxycycline in wastewater.

With the development of concentrated animal feeding operations in China, the air pollution problem has drawn widespread public attention. Residents living near farms are suffering from the emissions of particulate matter (PM) and odors. However, scientific data on the characteristics of these emissions are limited to the establishment and evaluation of mitigation strategies in China. This study was conducted to provide fundamental information on the concentrations of PM inside and outside a typical ventilated laying hen house in northeastern China. The results showed that outdoor PM concentrations of this laying hen house did not meet the requirements of the environmental quality standard of China's livestock and poultry farms in the two days out of six sampling days in summer, while indoor PM concentrations met the environmental requirements during this study. The indoor and outdoor PM concentrations were highly correlated in summer, and over 60% of particles indoor were emitted outside via mechanical ventilation. There were more fine particles dominated both inside and outside of the laying hen house. Besides, twelve and nine elements were measured from the PM sources inside and outside laying hen house, respectively. PM control strategies may be adjusted based on the status of exhaust fans, the ages of laying hens, atmospheric conditions, and routine house management to well reduce PM emissions and improve control efficiency.

Detailed investigations on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the surface of the praying mantis’ foreleg were carried out in this work since the microstructure and mechanical properties of insect organisms surface are well adjusted to their functions. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the surface microstructures of the tibia and femur were composed of squamous fibre and the spine surfaces on these two parts are arris. A nanoindenter was used to investigate the mechanical properties of the praying mantis's foreleg, including the mean Young's modulus and hardness of the femur cuticle, tibia cuticle and the apical claw. The test results on these parts were E = 5.533 GPa, H = 0.239 GPa, E = 3.471 GPa, H = 0.186 GPa, E = 2.232 GPa, H = 0.449 GPa, respectively. The variation of mechanical properties agreed with the analysis of microstructure.

The rapid detection of petroleum hydrocarbons and organic pesticides is an important prerequisite for precise soil management. It is also a guarantee for soil quality, environmental safety, and human health. However, the current rapid detection methods are prone to sample matrix interference, complex development processes, short lifespan, and low detection accuracy. Moreover, they face difficulties in achieving simultaneous detection of petroleum hydrocarbons and organic pesticides. In this paper, we developed an electronic nose system for the simultaneous detection of petroleum hydrocarbons and organic pesticides in soil based on gas technology, which includes a sampling module and recognition model. The developed sampling module can simultaneously acquire the odor signals of petroleum hydrocarbons and organic pesticides in soil. The established recognition model can quickly distinguish between healthy soil, soil contaminated by petroleum hydrocarbons, and soil contaminated by organic pesticides. It can also achieve specific recognition of pesticide types and petroleum types. The performance of the developed electronic nose system was verified for real soil, petroleum products, and organic pesticides. The experiment shows that the developed electronic nose system has an accuracy of 100% for three tasks: soil conditions identification, pesticide types identification, and petroleum types identification.

Air pollutants, such as particulate matter (PM) and ammonia (NH3), generated by intensive animal farming pose considerable threats to human health, animal welfare, and ecological balance. Conventional materials are often ineffective at simultaneously removing multiple pollutants, maintaining a low pressure drop, and ensuring durability in heavily polluted environments. Inspired by the dust-retention properties of Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica (PS) needles, this study developed a biomimetic grooved ribbon fiber using electrospinning technology. These fibers were further assembled into a three-dimensional bioinspired aerogel structure through freeze-forming technology to achieve efficient dust capture. Additionally, the introduction of UiO-66-NH2 nanoparticles significantly enhanced the properties of the aerogels for NH3 adsorption. Among the various prepared aerogels (PG, UPG-5, UPG-10, UPG-15, and UPG-20), UPG-10 demonstrated the best performance, achieving a filtration efficiency of 99.24% with a pressure drop of 95 Pa. Notably, it exhibited a remarkable dust-holding capacity of 147 g/m2, and its NH3 adsorption capacity reached 99.89 cm3/g, surpassing PG aerogel by 31.46 cm3/g. Additionally, UPG-10 exhibited outstanding elasticity, maintaining over 80% of its original shape after 30 compression cycles. This biomimetic aerogel presents a promising solution for air purification, contributing to improved agricultural efficiency and environmental sustainability.
