We report an experimental study of passive harmonic mode-locking in an all-fiber switchable dual-wavelength Er/Yb double-clad laser. The proposed scheme supports single- and dual-wavelength operation of mode-locked pulses with rectangular, h-like and trapezoidal shapes in a noise-like pulse regime. Single-wavelength emissions at λ1 = 1545.1 and λ2 = 1563.6 nm were obtained for pump power values of 9.42 and 6.31 W, achieving pulse durations of up to 18 and 11.8 ns, respectively. At an intermediary pump power of 7.5 W, dual-wavelength emission is obtained and pulses of around 3.59 ns are generated. Additionally, the transition dynamics until 4th-order harmonic mode-locking is also observed. Different laser operation regimes of fundamental and different orders of harmonic mode-locking, with rectangular, h-shaped or trapezoidal shaped pulses are obtained with the same laser configuration with simple and well-defined plates and pump power adjustments.

The conditions to obtain noise-like pulses (NLPs) from a figure-eight fiber laser (F8L) and their application for supercontinuum (SC) generation in the anomalous dispersion regime are reported. The F8L is designed to remove the undesired low-intensity background radiation from pulse emission, generating NLPs with a 3 dB spectral bandwidth of 17.43 nm at the fundamental repetition frequency of 0.8 MHz. After amplification, NLPs reach a maximum average power of 9.2 mW and 123.32 nm spectral bandwidth. By controlling the amplifier pump power, flat SC generation is demonstrated through both a 800 m long spool of SMF-28 fiber and a piece of 5 m long highly nonlinear optical fiber. The results demonstrate a satisfactory flatness of ~3 dB over a bandwidth of ~1000 nm in the range from 1261 to 2261 nm, achieving to the best of our knowledge, one of the flattest SC generated from noise-like pulses.

We experimentally demonstrate dissipative soliton resonance effect in a 173-m long passively mode-locked figure-eight thulium doped fiber laser with a net anomalous dispersion. The duration of the wave-breaking-free pulse broadens with the increase of a pump power. At maximum pump power of 4.5 W, square pulses were generated with duration of 85.18 ns, average output power of 245 mW, pulse energy of 206 nJ, and repetition rate of 1.19 MHz.

Conventional mode locking is characterized by the generation of a stable train of optical pulses. Even in the noise-like pulsing regime of fiber lasers, sometimes described as partial mode locking, a periodic train of waveforms is still generated. In this work we study the dynamics of a figure-eight fiber laser away from the stable noise-like pulsing regime. By analyzing sequences of time-domain measurements performed with ns resolution, we reveal a wide range of puzzling dynamics, in which sub-structures emerge and drift away from the main bunch, decay or grow in a step-like manner, before vanishing abruptly. In some cases, sub-packets also concentrate in the central part of the period, forming one or multiple wide clouds that merge or split over time scales of seconds or minutes. Spontaneous transitions between these multiple states occur in a non-periodic manner, so that no quasi-stationary behavior is found over long time scales. These results provide a dramatic illustration of the extremely rich dynamics taking place in fiber lasers at the frontier of mode locking.

A switchable and tunable multi-wavelength Tm-doped fiber laser is successfully demonstrated using a filter constructed with two tapered fiber elements in the cavity. The proposed system design uses a low-cost simple filter that allows stable dual, triple, quadruple, and quintuple-wavelength emission operation in the region around 1.9 μm. In the dual wavelength regime, the laser is capable of independently tuning each wavelength. For switching and tuning, a curvature is applied to the tapered fibers.
