This paper presents a study on the complexity of cargo arrangements in the pallet loading problem. Due to the diversity of perspectives that have been presented in the literature, complexity is one of the least studied practical constraints. In this work, we aim to refine and propose a new set of metrics to measure the complexity of an arrangement of cargo in a pallet. The parameters are validated using statistical methods, such as principal component analysis and multiple linear regression, using data retrieved from the company logistics. Our tests show that the number of boxes was the main variable responsible for explaining complexity in the pallet loading problem.

Tourists’ demand for outdoor sport-related activities has been growing in the last decade, leading to the recognition of the outdoor tourism potential of the development of rural and urban areas where the activities could take place. While the literature has recognized this potential, its features and the existing conditions for its practice are often not fully comprehended, mainly due to the lack of measurement systems and performance indicators. This study addresses this gap by proposing a wide-ranging assessment matrix of nine outdoor-related activities, employing northern Portugal as a study area. Based on an exploratory qualitative analysis employing semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders (public, private and third sector), the main contribution of this study lies in the development of the outdoor tourism assessment matrix (OTAM) to collect data. The OTAM matrix aims to identify and assess the conditions, namely the infrastructure and resources, for the practice of outdoor and sport tourism-related activities within the sustainable development pillars. The nine matrices comprising the OTAM allow the identification of the places where the outdoor activities can be practiced, and the conditions under which they can contribute to the definition of the development strategies of outdoor tourism.

This paper studies the optimal level of privatization in a mixed duopoly with one state-owned semi-public firm and one private firm producing imperfectly substitutable goods, and the corresponding effects. We consider two potential combinations: (i) the state-owned public firm sets the price and the private firm sets the output production; and (ii) the state-owned public firm sets the output production and the private firm sets the price.

Tourism has established itself as an important economic and social activity in almost all world scenarios, with emphasis on the segments related to nature. With this, the Conservation Units have significantly corroborated the quality of the offer of spaces where it is possible to practice this type of tourism. In this work, we will highlight the potentialities and possibilities of the practice of Pedagogical Tourism in the national parks of Serra de Itabaiana, in Brazil and Peneda-Gerês, in Portugal. To achieve the objective, this research requested documentary and bibliographic analysis from the public data platforms of the countries in question and proceeded to the consultation of documents provided by the Institute of Nature Conservation and Forests, Portugal. Interviews were conducted with the most important managers of both Conservation Units. It was concluded that the parks under study already perform the function of living laboratory for the practice of pedagogical tourism and, therefore, are potentially expressive and recognized by research institutions of both countries. However, it should be noted that economic sustainability has proved problematic for the analyzed realities and requires public and private interventions in order to make them more effective and sustainable for the improvement of man and nature relations.

Advances in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) are rapidly transforming the world, promoting social and economic development. At the same time, tourism is one of the fastest growing economic sectors and can play and important role in boosting a country’s economy. This paper aims to analyse the impact of ICT and tourism on economic growth in European and Central Asian countries. The analysis is based on a sample of 42 countries over the period 1995–2018. Using panel data estimation techniques, the results suggest that ICT (a composed index of internet users, fixed broadband and mobile cellular subscriptions) and tourism are important determinants of economic growth. The results also reveal that and increase in the burden caused by non-working people on a nation’s working-age population has adverse effects on economic growth, while urbanization and inflation are insignificant. Promoting technology advancements, ICT diffusion and tourism expansion can foster economic growth.

Tourism is a socio-cultural phenomenon that has intensified with technological development and with the advancement of communication and transport systems. However, the increase in the number of people moving around the world does not necessarily represent success or tourist access, but it can mostly serve more immediate marketing interests. Since tourism is considered a phenomenon, the sociological interest to study it arises. Tourist practice is an educational process, a learning process, which is established through the relationship between visitors and residents and their cultural backgrounds. Several authors dedicate their studies to this field, and several are also those who try to understand the relations between tourists and the residents in the host region. The purpose of this work is to review the scientific literature that is focused on the sociology of tourism as a subject to study the economic, social, and environmental impacts of tourism on societies and residents and how residents perceived the benefits and costs of tourism developments in the local community. Review of literature suggests that interactions between visitors and the host community can lead to short and long term positive and negative social-cultural, economic and environmental impacts on destinations.

In this paper we consider, on one hand, a differentiated Cournot model, and, on the other hand, a differentiated Bertrand model, when one of the firms engages in an R&D process that gives an endogenous cost-reducing innovation. The aim of the present paper is two-fold. The first is to study the licensing of the cost-reduction by a per-unit royalty and a fixed-fee in these Cournot and Bertrand models. The second is to do a direct comparison between Cournot model and Bertrand model. We analyse the implications of these types of licensing contracts over the R&D effort, the profits of the firms, the consumer surplus and the social welfare. We show that some previous results for two-part tariff licensing are not robust, in the sense that they can be not true for just either a per-unit royalty contract or a fixed-fee contract. Furthermore, by using comparative static analysis, we conclude that the degree of the differentiation of the goods assumes a great importance in the results. We also discuss the optimal licensing, meaning that which licensing method is preferred, in each of the duopoly models considered.

Measures that address the seasonality, one of the identified overtourism direct causes, allow making a critical reflection on the application of control policies and monitoring regional measures crucial on a sector with such importance at the regional development analysis. The measures should stimulate or reduce tourism demand during low or peak seasons, respectively, generating a better distribution of tourism flows and eliminating potential overtourism situations. Therefore, this chapter focuses on the development of a Gini Index to analyse the distribution of the seasonality in northern Portugal and through it control current public measures in practice and suggest the implementation of different and more effective policy measures. For instance, the ones that make a clear bet on outdoor tourism activities. It will be used in the Gini Index, by the tourists' market of origin measured by the overnight stays in hotel establishments. The results showed the high seasonal concentration of tourist flows.

In a globalized world, organizations no longer operate at a national level, which poses challenges for corporate ethics standards. Ethics has gained importance in this competitive business environment. In addition, enterprises face different levels of government ethics and political systems in which they operate and when they face high levels of corruption in the public sector this may lower the standard for corporate ethics. Using regression models for panel-data, the aim of this paper is to assess the effects of corruption in the public sector on corporate ethics, in a sample of 127 countries over the period of 2006–2017. The results suggest that there is a significant and negative impact of corruption in the public sector on the ethical behavior of firms. In addition, regulatory quality, corporate accountability and internet usage have significant and positive impacts on corporate ethics. This implies that fighting public corruption, promoting the development of policies that are market-friendly, strengthening the standards of auditing and reporting, and increasing the degree of digitalization of a country can improve the ethical behavior of firms.

In this age of globalized medicine, when international travel and access to online health information is easily accessible, medical tourism (MT) gains an important global perspective on health. Patients, in most countries around the world, are exercising crescent degrees of autonomy in their health care options, obtaining information from different sources from their regular health care providers and, in some cases, choosing to seek care alternatives outside of national health service. In Portugal MT, is still only in the early stages but is considered one of the strategic products for tourism development. This study aims to explore the existing information on MT in Portugal. Information plays a very important role in attracting medical tourism and Portugal’s ability to design and implement information networks is largely known. Proper medical information systems are one of the most important tools for attracting medical tourists. The analysis in this paper reveals that Portugal presents the necessary conditions to be a destination of MT, due to the infrastructures and the human resources that it has, but currently few people know this country for the practice of medical treatments. Although the MT is in the introductory phase of the market, already has mechanisms to meet demand, it is still necessary to position itself in the international market. It will be necessary to create an image of Portugal associated with tourism linked to health care, creating a branding and slogans to promote the MT.

This paper considers a price-set competition between a nonprofit hotel and a for-profit hotel, in a differentiated service market, with uncertain demand. We compute the Bayesian-Nash equilibrium, and we analyse the effects of the degree of altruistic preference on market equilibrium outcomes. As a result, we get that as the nonprofit hotel values more the consumer surplus, both hotels set higher (resp., lower) prices, if the probability of higher demand is high (resp., low). Furthermore, the expected profit of the for-profit hotel decreases (resp., increases) with the degree of altruistic preference, for either low or high (resp., intermediate) values of this degree. The expectation of the objective function of the nonprofit hotel increases with the degree of altruistic preference.

The northern region of Portugal, in the last years, has experienced the enhancement of tourism demand, which may induce the emergence of an over tourism phenomenon in some particular subregions of the North of Portugal. This phenomenon may cause significant destruction of the living conditions of residents, landscapes, seascapes, air and water quality, causing economic inequalities and social exclusion. The aim of this research paper is to understand if the phenomena of over tourism is present in the North of Portugal and if it changed overtime. The concentration of tourism activity in different municipality subregions can be measured with the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index a well know economic concentration measure. Using as variables the number guest and their expenditure in accommodation, to measure the demand, and the number of establishments, bedrooms and lodging capacity to measure the supply was possible to follow the concentration of tourism demand and supply in the 8 NUTIII regions located in the North of Portugal. The results showed that a specific subregion–Area Metropolitan do Porto–concentrates both the tourism demand and supply in the years 2014 and 2017, despite the increasing values found for all the variables in the 8 subregions. When it is observed a decrease in the levels of concentration are the subregions near by the most concentrate one that increase the share of tourism demand and supply. More rural and less populated areas need more targeted and specific policies measures to attract even more visitors.

This article aims to emphasize the importance and function of the landscape as a tourism resource, increasingly valued in tourism destinations. The landscapes are the subject of discussion and the object of sensitization to the valorisation and preservation in recent years. Nowadays, the landscape has acquired a greater appreciation on the part of society, because it is often assigned values representative by one or more sets of individuals. The valuation of the landscape allowed to create regulations and legislation related to its preservation and maintenance. In this sense, this research focuses on the importance of the landscape as a tourism resource and its impact on the motivation and preferences of the tourist in the northern region of Portugal as a tourism destination. Results demonstrate the preference about “coastal landscape”, followed by “mountain landscape”; also, Porto Metropolitan Area is notably the most visited region in the North of Portugal, followed by the Douro region. Most respondents agree that they usually include viewpoint in their journey plans, emphasizing “natural viewpoints”.

The purpose of this paper is to analyse the knowledge and evaluation of the trade-offs of logistics costs by companies, as well as their impact on their financial economic performance, due to the importance of the relationship between logistics costs and financial performance and the relevance of the study for the Portuguese business enterprises. A questionnaire based on the theoretical framework was administered to professionals at selected companies. The survey, answered by 48 enterprises, shows that the although Portuguese logistics professionals have extensive experience and academic preparation, they continue to make pressure for individual cost cuts, not considering the existing trade-offs, incurring in profit losses.

The purpose of this paper is to identify Portuguese residents’ apprehensions about perceived risks, including the terrorism risk, while travelling abroad. It was implemented a quantitative research methodology and there were collected samples. The factor analysis, specifically the principal component analysis with varimax rotation, was used to assess the underlying structure of Portuguese tourist’s risk perception. We found four dimensions, namely, “risk in international trips”, “interest in terrorism news”, “perceived importance of safety” and “generalized insecurity”. The perceived risk dimensions were collapsed into one and using logistic regression analysis, the risk dimension was regressed against a set of independent variables to determine which factors influence the Portuguese tourist’s perceived risks. The results show that monthly net income, perception of terrorism in Africa, risk aversion, level of education, travel companion, number of international trips and thinking that travelling is risky nowadays are significant to the model.
