Teaching and learning have radically changed in the COVID-19 era and highlighted many novel aspects of online teaching and learning. Based on a qualitative content analysis of central European university students’ responses, the aim of this study is to discuss their reflections on the use of digital media in foreign language classes during the COVID-19 pandemic. The key method of this qualitative study includes focus group interviews. The results reveal both advantages and disadvantages of online foreign language teaching and their impact on students’ second language (L2) acquisition. The positive aspects involve satisfaction with being able to study a foreign language from the comfort from their homes, avoidance of commuting to school, ample opportunities to review the learning material, or improvement of listening skills. On the contrary, the negative aspects included a striking lack of social contact in the form of face-to-face classes, absence of collaboration between the teacher and students and between the students themselves in order to share and build on their knowledge and experience, health issues associated with a frequent exposure to technologies, or a lack of possibility to develop speaking skills. In conclusion, the authors of this study provide several implications for teaching practice, technology experts, and other stakeholders, which must be considered very seriously, as they represent the opinion of the users of online learning.

The paper deals with a possibility of foreign language learning (FLL) intervention in older adults as a psychosocial rehabilitation method to improve the quality of life (QoL) in this age segment, i.e. the people who are over 55 years. FLL has been researched as a successful tool to maintain or even enhance cognitive functions in older age along with other intentional activities, such as engagement in any physical activity. FLL cannot dramatically improve memory and cognitive deterioration of older adults, however, it can improve QoL by increasing subjective happiness that is connected to improved wellbeing. The research was conducted in two groups of seniors who are engaged in FLL, specifically in the Czech Republic and Poland. The major premise of the research was based on the positive psychology concept, i.e., the subjective happiness leads to improved levels of QoL. Both groups consisted of about a hundred respondents whose opinions were researched by an online questionnaire. The major focus of this questionnaire was to evaluate the level of subjective happiness and then compare the results obtained from the respondents from these two geographically different regions. The findings clearly showed that those who had engaged in FLL had reached high levels of subjective happiness, therefore, their subjective wellbeing could be improved. These results might be important for psychosocial rehabilitation practices because they can create a framework for further non-pharmacological intervention to maintain healthy aging. FLL can thus be a very efficient tool for any psychosocial rehabilitation in older healthy adults who do not suffer from any cognitive pathological development but who are just experiencing negative side effects of natural aging process. The research into this topic is very scarce, and therefore, this paper could be an inspiration for further and larger-scale research.

The current development in mobile learning has seen an unprecedented rise in the last decade and, moreover, the present pandemic situation has speeded up the process of eLearning implementation even in areas that were still rather reluctant in this respect. The paper attempts to provide the results and analysis of the subjective satisfaction of the users of these foreign language learning apps. Qualitative research was conducted at the Faculty of Informatics and Management of the University of Hradec Kralove, the Czech Republic, as a qualitative study through a set of guided interviews with students/users. The respondents (n=18) were the students of information science and data science of the university; therefore, their opinion can prove to be very useful as they are well informed and they also represented the youngest generation, i.e. Millennials, who may have rather different needs from the previous generations, and these needs are, naturally, reflected in their use of technology. The tested apps belong to the most popular and most downloaded free apps for foreign language learning currently available in the iOS and Android markets. The findings of the research clearly show that the main concern of the users of the apps was the lack of AI utilization and old-fashioned interface of the apps despite the fact that they are relatively new. Another major concern was the old-fashioned design, and regarding human-computer interaction in these apps, the lack of machine learning and deep learning strategies.

The paper deals with the topic of corruption that has been understood as a global social problem since the 1990s. Its theoretical background is rooted in the theory of social constructivism. Social constructivism highlights the social strategy in which increased social discourse about a particular topic implies and reflects a growing interest of the society in the topic to arouse a robust awareness of the issue as a social problem. It analyses academic journals and conference paper proceedings that appear in a well-known database of academic journals and texts, namely in Web of Science. The research follows PRISMA methodology and it was conducted as an analysis of the terms and collocations that are connected to the issue of corruption with the aim to identify relevant research papers which have appeared in Web of Science since 1995. The idea behind this analysis was not only to identify the journal papers and papers published as conference proceedings but to compare the results geographically with well-known officially acknowledged state and government data dealing with the issue of corruption, and then to look for connections between these two areas, i.e. academic and governmental data. The results show significant differences between post-communist countries versus the so-called West regarding how they present information about corruption in their academic discourse. Despite the fact that the West supports the East in its fight with corruption economically, it is not reflected sufficiently and adequately in the relevant academic discourse. This paper suggests that societal resilience against corruption can dramatically be supported by enhanced academic discourse about the topic that is still not sufficient. Positive psychology has recently seen unprecedented rise and has reached vast achievements in the area of quality of life (QoL) improvement. The purpose of this study is to show that there are different aspects of well-being that make healthy older people motivated to learn a foreign language at a later age. The research was conducted in the Czech Republic and Poland in two groups of learners aged 55 years and more. The experimental group consisted of 105 Czech respondents who were targeted with an online questionnaire with the aim to determine the level of FLL outcomes connected to QoL in healthy older adults in their L2 acquisition. The second experimental group (n = 100) was established of Polish seniors who attended similar language courses. The findings of the research clearly show that FLL has an irreplaceable role as one of several non-pharmacological strategies utilized to improve the aging process and reduce drawbacks of aging. The results indicate that seniors' overall satisfaction and subjective feelings of well-being are enormously high when attending foreign language classes at older age. FLL, therefore, creates an environment that can enhance QoL of older adults that can be supplemented by other means such as well-balanced diet, other social activities, sport and physical activity, music, or computer games. All these intervention methods can significantly improve QoL of older adults and the parties engaged and/or responsible for taking care of older generation should take it into serious consideration.

Healthy aging is one of the most important aspects of human life as it can significantly improve its quality. Therefore, it is necessary to promote successful aging as a significant and important part of maintaining physical and mental well-being in the elderly. One of the strategies to enhance the elderly’s well-being may be also foreign language learning. The purpose of this study is to compare and discuss what effect foreign language learning (FLL) might have on subjective well-being among healthy older individuals in the Czech Republic and Poland, using factor analysis as the primary statistical method. The research sample consisted of two experimental groups of seniors; one from the Czech Republic (n = 92) and another from Poland (n = 100). The main research methods included a questionnaire survey and factor analysis. The factor analysis revealed the four significant factors and their correlations with demographic variables, whose results showed the effect of FLL on seniors’ subjective well-being. In conclusion, learning a foreign language at an older age seems to be one of the key strategies to maintain a subjective feeling of happiness at a relatively high level in elderly people without necessary pharmacological intervention.

Human-computer interaction (HCI) has drawn a lot of attention in the past few years from the technological viewpoint, however, there are several aspects that must be considered when dealing with optimizing HCI. Information technology is ubiquitous and so is digital communication which is conducted globally through the network, both the Internet and intranets of companies. Digital communication bears a significant aspect, similarly to any kind of communication, and it is the fact that it is based on cultural discourse. Due to the fact that any digital communication and human-computer interaction are culturally conditioned and it takes place in the global world of interconnectedness, it is always intercultural. The cultural discourse, manifested by linguistic means, of this communication, is one of the most important parameters which must be taken into account if we want to optimize information transfers and attempt to reach relatively lossless information transfer. The paper summarizes the results of the research which dealt with the issue of cultural narratives present in websites. The findings clearly show that the ICT students do not realize the importance of this aspect despite the fact that in business and other related areas the cultural narratives have already been researched sufficiently. The paper will be useful for ICT departments and managers as it draws our attention to this crucial aspect of HCI necessary for future technology enhancements.

This paper focuses on specific aspects of human-computer communication, i.e., the interculturality in information and communication technologies in the global world of interconnectedness. The current world of communication can be described by two aspects, namely, the vast proportion of communication is done electronically and it is more or less always intercultural because it is conducted through modern electronic means of communication (emails, social media, presentations, eLearning, blended learning, mLearning, etc.) in the global world of interconnectedness (the World Wide Web). These two aspects are at the foundation of basically all processes both IT and business and must not be neglected. The paper attempts to highlight the fact that a vast part of information can be lost during the information transfer through communication, and it is due to the aforementioned combination of interculturality and interconnectedness. The research was conducted into the awareness of these two intertwined aspects in foreign (Asian) and Czech university students of business and IT. The results clearly show the lack of information and knowledge about the current situation.

This study concerns aspects of positive psychology connected to foreign language learning (FLL) in an older healthy generation. The positive psychology perspective stresses the positive aspects of improved wellbeing in participants who engage in various activities, particularly mental and brain-training practices. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore older people’s subjective feelings connected to their FLL as one of the crucial ways to improve their quality of life (QoL). The objective of the research was to determine the subjective satisfaction level of the participants of a second language (L2) acquisition course. The research sample (experimental group) consisted of 105 respondents who were Czech citizens and 55+ years old. Two control groups were set up. The first (young control) consisted of 102 young adults (university students), also Czech citizens, aged between 19 and 23 years. The second control group (elderly control) consisted of 102 subjects older than 55 years, similar in age to the experimental group. A standardized online questionnaire survey was the principal research method, identical both for the experimental and control groups. The findings clearly showed that language training significantly improved the subjective positive feelings and wellbeing of the older participants, regardless of their objective progress in FLL itself. These results stood in opposition to the young control group and were different from the elderly control group. The results revealed that FLL is an effective tool for enhancing the overall wellbeing of older people, which was shown in their expression of their feelings of happiness, satisfaction, and positive motivation to learn an L2. In addition, FLL objectively affected their mental health in a positive way and expanded their social networks. Moreover, FLL was a meaningful activity for them, despite the weak objective learning outcomes due to the decline of cognitive functions, helping them find their general purpose of life, as well as life motivation as expressed in the survey. These findings are crucial, as it has already been proven that wellbeing is directly connected with good health and longevity. Therefore, national governments and all stakeholders dealing with the present issue of the aging population should pay undivided attention to the enhancement of older people’s wellbeing by all possible intervention approaches, including FLL. There is limited research into the issue and the findings of this investigation could be an impetus for further research into the topic from the perspectives of cognitive science, psychology, and psycholinguistics.

Managerial communication in the past few decades has been much influenced by new trends in computer science bringing new means of communication. The use of computers for communication is ubiquitous and the trend toward computerization will be even stronger soon. However, the intercultural aspect of this communication must not be neglected as it poses a potential threat to company management and all the communication processes in the company and global business environment. Applied linguistics presents a potentially useful tool which could be used for IT developers of communication tools and apps so that they take into consideration critical aspects of human communication which must be implemented in these modern communication tools and methods. Applied linguistics and its practical implementation can prove very useful and can reinforce managerial communication when using modern technological tools. ICT departments, in the past few years, have been focusing more on technological aspects of communication when creating these tools; however, now it is clearly visible that there is an urgent need to have more parameters embedded in the communication tools and one of them is the interculturality aspect because electronic or computer communication is now in its essence global and intercultural. The conducted research into the intercultural communication awareness in ICT departments proves that the need for bringing this topic to priority in education ICT students is crucial to further competitiveness and lossless transfer of information.

This paper attempts to bring new ideas regarding the use of artificial intelligence in language learning apps. Artificial intelligence has seen a dramatic increase and its utilization in various aspects of data science, information science and various platforms is unprecedented. Its ubiquitousness is evident in smart cities, in online marketing, and data mining, however, its utilization in language learning apps is still somehow neglected. There are a few questions, such as why it is so, etc., this paper attempts to address. The research focuses on several most used language learning apps and the presence of artificial intelligence in them. The findings of the paper are as follows: basically none of the analysed apps uses any kind of machine learning, artificial intelligence or deep learning, and they are mostly based on predefined algorithms that do not utilize the full potential of the computational power we have currently available. The paper also suggests possible solutions and brings practical advice on how to implement artificial intelligence in these apps. The paper is important for any education innovation at the beginning of the 21 century. Without his innovative approach, education will lack sustainability and competitiveness, which will present a serious threat to the whole educational system.

The paper deals with implementation of a smart learning environment, namely Blackboard, into the course of business communication. The new approach was implemented into the course and the research was conducted into the subjective satisfaction of the users of the environment. The first research was conducted in 2018 into the users´ satisfaction with the course which was taught using traditional methods, and the second research was conducted in 2019 into the users´ satisfaction with the new online course. The idea of the creator of the online course was to keep the contents and the scope of the subject as much similar as possible to create two groups of users, i.e. the first, using the traditional approaches, and the second with the modern technology-enabled class. With this intention, the Blackboard class was created, and the users were taught by using blended learning methodology. The research focused merely on personal satisfaction with the course within the intention of positive psychology, i.e. focusing on potential issues regarding personal satisfaction. It did not focus on the differences in the performance of the students as there is a lot of research into this aspect. However, it focused on the individual satisfaction and personal feelings of the users while using blended learning platforms in the context of ubiquitous computing. The findings are that the users expressed their satisfaction regarding easily accessible materials and varied learning environment; however, the dissatisfaction was created by increased screen time and reduces social contacts. The findings are very important for educators who use various mobile platforms and eLearning environments as they should be aware of the reservations of the users of these tools.

The paper describes the introduction of the course of intercultural business communication into the curriculum of the Faculty of Informatics and Management of the University of Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic, five years ago as an obligatory subject for foreign students visiting the university. Initially, the subject was taught using traditional methods like lectures of the tutor and the seminars. However, after a few years blended learning methodology was introduces into the course. The students’ satisfaction with the course was tested after each year and the paper compares the results before and after the introduction of blended learning into the subject. Computer aided course clearly proves to be assessed by the students more positively and the paper thus stresses the important of necessary introduction of hybrid and blended learning into traditional curricula as it shows significant improvements in students’ satisfaction, motivation and performance levels.

Machine learning has been used for several years already in information science to create algorithms which enable computers to solve problems without giving them particular tasks and instructions to perform these tasks. This paper attempts to concentrate on possibilities of this AI (artificial intelligence) subfield inasmuch it could prove helpful for blended learning. It brings possible questions which are connected to e-learning, blended learning and machine learning and its utilization in university courses. It also brings several questions of computational linguistics which could prove extremely helpful in blended learning processes in which it could bring big data analysis. These phenomena are relatively new, therefore, neglected by blended learning scholars, thus this paper brings these new ideas together and wants to present new ideas and concepts which will be utilized in blended learning area. It also suggests new approach to blended learning, coined by the term blended learning 2.0, which implements modern approaches such as computational linguistics and corpus linguistics into the utilization of e-platforms in the educational process.

Human-computer interaction is the foundation of basically all fundamental communication practices which are underway in today’s global world of interconnectedness. The areas included are mostly business, corporate and managerial communication, social media communication patterns and practices, various kinds of intercultural communication, etc. Human-computer interaction is also massively implemented in modern educational strategies, such as eLearning, blended learning, hybrid learning and mLeaning. These two areas, i.e. business and learning processes, are heavily influenced by current trends in ICT and all aspects are influenced by new communication paradigms. The new communication paradigms are both cognitive and computational. Analog communication has been vastly abandoned and substituted by modern communication tools, means and processes. These cognitive and computational aspects must be taken into consideration so that we can optimize our communication patterns. The paper highlights the importance of intercultural aspects in human-computer interaction and communication. The research shows that the awareness of this topic is still not sufficient and tries to highlight its importance. The paper also provides pragmatic solutions for global digital communication patterns and strategies which could be implemented in the data transfer through visualization in websites. This way of optimizing is necessary for any human-computer interaction so that it will remain competitive and sustainable in the global world of interconnectedness.

Current managerial communication in the global business world has recently experienced dramatic and unprecedented changes connected to the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in business and managerial communication. The objective of this paper is to analyze the changes in ICT-enhanced business and managerial communication in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the Czech Republic. The use of ICT in business and managerial communication is obvious and brings various benefits, but it also has some drawbacks that should be identified and analyzed. From a methodological point of view, this study is twofold. Firstly, we conduct a systematic review of the current literature on the topic of business and managerial communication, providing an understanding of the recent development in the area of business and managerial communication. Secondly, we conduct qualitative research into the current state of ICT-enhanced managerial and business communication in several SMEs in the Czech Republic. The findings of the literature research show that there are two key aspects that define modern business and managerial communication, i.e., interculturality and interconnectedness. These two aspects of business and managerial communication are very recent, and they bring many challenges that must be considered in order to optimize communication. These altered communication paradigms have the potential to improve global competitiveness and produce new opportunities in the global market. The second part of the research shows that the general awareness of the changes in business communication is limited, and this could potentially pose a threat to business and managerial communication, leading to a loss of opportunities and reduced competitiveness. The majority of global-based companies have already become culture-, communication-, technology- and information-dependent, and ignoring or neglecting this fact presents a significant risk, which may be one of the biggest threats to global competitiveness. Since the success of SMEs is critical for the development of the national economy, it is recommended that company communication be continuously enhanced by frequent training at all organizational levels. This presents a challenge for educational institutions and training centers, managers and businesspeople, of creating communication competencies that would be highly rewarded in the global business environment.

The presented paper focuses on the potential use of computational linguistics and machine learning in blended learning and m-learning. It suggests that the utilization of these new phenomena, also coined by the term artificial intelligence, could bring many advantages which are still not present in the traditional use of e-learning, blended learning, and m-learning platforms. The modern approach to e-learning should utilize these new phenomena so that it creates a useful platform for educational process. The paper stresses the importance of such an approach as it brings new challenges for the creators and the users which, however, are extremely useful for the modern utilization of smart devices in the e-learning process.

Currently, due to the changing demographic trends, there is a growing number of older people suffering from aging diseases such as dementia. Dementia is a neurological disorder, which develops gradually, but progressively. Especially in the last stage of dementia, patients are fully dependent on caregiver’s help since they are not able to take care of themselves. The purpose of this article is to explore the use of e-learning as an informal caregiver’s tool for persons with dementia and discuss its benefits and limitations in order to improve the quality of life of caretakers of people with dementia. The methodology is based on a literature review of the research topic, i.e., the use of e-learning tools for informal caretakers of patients with dementia in the period of January 1, 2015 to June 30, 2019. The findings show that the informal caregivers in all identified articles were satisfied with the e-learning platform, program, or the course whose content tried to help them acquire more information and knowledge about the disease, as well as educate them how to cope with the perceived distress and enhance empathy for their patients. One of the main limitations of this review is a lack of studies found on the research topic. However, this fact has been confirmed by other research studies, which reveal that technologies evaluated for informal caregivers are rare. Therefore, more research should be done in this area.

Multinational enterprises and their management have been experiencing unprecedented changes due to globalization and all the consequences connected to it in the way the companies communicate with each other throughout boundaries and in the way communication of businesspeople inside the companies is managed. Two-phase research was conducted. Research 1 in 2013 and subsequently Research 2 in 2018 and the beginning of 2019. Both Research 1 and Research 2 were conducted into the current situation in business communication and the use of mobile devices in several multinational enterprises and small and medium enterprises in the Czech Republic. The paper attempts to compare these two situations, i.e. five years ago, and now, thus providing important data for the description of managerial communication supported by mobile devices in the past few years. There is no similar research available, not only in the Czech Republic, but also in the European scale.
