Biography

Jaime Andrés Pérez-Taborda received his B.Sc. degree in Engineering Physics (Hons.) from the Technological University of Pereira, Colombia, in 2011, and his M.Sc. degree in Synchrotron Radiation and Particle Accelerators from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain, in 2013. He obtained his Ph.D. (cum laude) from the Institute of Microelectronics of Madrid (IMM-CSIC), in collaboration with the Complutense University of Madrid and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). His research focuses on the nanoengineering of functional materials for sensing and energy applications, including piezoelectric and thermoelectric nanostructures fabricated by physical deposition techniques such as sputtering and pulsed laser deposition. In recent years, his work has expanded toward AIoT-based environmental monitoring systems, integrating low-cost sensing platforms, edge artificial intelligence, and citizen science. He has authored and co-authored numerous scientific publications in these areas, contributing to scalable technologies for real-time environmental diagnostics and energy harvesting. He is currently a Professor at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia and Co-Founder of the Colombian Society of Physical Engineering, where he has served as President. In 2020, he was recognized twice by MIT Technology Review as “Visionary of the Year” and as one of the “Innovators Under 35”.
